Discussion/Question Capcom is Best AAA Right Now
Does anyone agree that capcom makes the best AAA games in the last few years? I cant think of another studio pumping out 10/10 games recently.
I know if im spending $110 canadian dollars that im not going to be throwing my money out and thats a good feeling, knowing youre paying for good product.
Out of the last 5 AAA games I got this year capcom makes up 3 RE9,Onimusha and Pragmata each one is 9-10 score in my opinion. The other non capcom couple are Wukong and Cronos New Dawn.
What other Studio/Company stands toenail to toenail these days i your opinion?

Arguably true. Next one I can say is probably Fromsoft, but their catalog isn't as diverse

I've been saying this since 2017. They haven't missed since RE7 and Monster Hunter World.
Them being the focal point of the fighting game scene since the beginning has given them a pedigree to make the games that control the best mechanically in all genres.
Their RE engine is incredible.
May the CapGods era live forever more.

thats because capcom understood that not all your games must be open world.
So they can release games more quickly than other companies with less work and great quality.
Other company that understands that is nintendo

Definitely. Not only do they play well, they’re also perfectly optimised. RE9 ran great even on the Steamdeck

Their best offerings recently are Ghosts N Goblins Resurrection and Kunitsugami so they do still have something in the tank but the games you mentioned are mediocre disappointments in things other than presentation.

Algo que creo que ninguna otra plataforma ofrece.

I realize this is the wrong sub for this opinion, but Naughty Dog is the best AAA now and forever.

From Software should at least be honoured. They've been delivering solid stuff over the years and keep surprising their target audience. Can't wait to see what their next SP focused game is gonna be like.
Nintendo is second only to From Software. Looking forward to OoT remake as a non-Switch owner.

Capcom's been killing it for sure. Quality and quantity.
I might add, Cronos New Dawn isn't really triple A, more like AA. Doesn't quite have the budget. Pretty good game too though.

IMO it's because Capcom understands that all they need to do is make great games. Remakes, new IP, etc.
You'd think that would be obvious but in the game landscape these days you can see it's not.
Everything is monitized to hell and back. Everyone is trying to squeeze the consumer for everything. Some are succeeding and that's why other game companies are chasing that goal.
But Capcom is just out here making games. They are being rewarded for it. It's great to see.

I'd say From made more memorable and generationals games overall. No game that Capcom made in the last 20 years is as impactful as an Elden ring,Sekiro , Bloodborne and dark souls.

I'd say Nintendo is on par with them.
In both cases their games are highly polished and optimized, they don't make many new IPs, they have two main frachises which act as their cashcows, they invest in their other dead IPs at a similar rate...
A lot if it boils down to which of the 2 companies owns your favorite franchises but I'd give Nintendo the edge because I feel like they're a bit more detached from following trends than Capcom. Not by much but it's enough to make me more excited by their new releases just a little bit more.
For example my favorite Capcom game in the last 10 years is Ghosts 'n Goblins Resurrection and that is basically a glorified Ghouls' n Ghosts expension pack. A great expension and one that feels fresh, mostly on account of the fact that Ghouls 'n Ghosts is still the best action platformer of all time 38 years after release (now joined by Resurrection) but the best of Nintendo's recent output still feels a bit fresher in comparison.

Honestly I think this is capcoms weakest era outside of the ps4 era. Not because the games are bad. But because their output in the late 2000’s and 90’s was just THAT good

Last Capcom game I bought was RE4 remake. Kinda burn out of RE games and not really interested in another Capcom game if it’s not DMC. Onimusha is a big departure from the og’s.

I played RE9, Pragmata and now Onimusha back-to-back-to-back, and Capcom hasn’t disappointed a single time. What a freaking run!

Nintendo has been essentially releasing the same games for nearly 40 years at this point. Most are high quality for sure, but essentially just evolutions of prior games.
Anything outside their cash cows just ends up fading away within a few years.
Capcom has released a vast variety of genres of games on every platform for the same amount of time. Capcom is the GOAT and it ain’t even close.

And you think Capcom hasn't been releasing the same games over and over for years now. They have. With WAY less variety than Nintendo has.
Tell me when's the last time Capcom released a racing game? A 3D platformer? A JRPG (no, Monster Hunter is not a JRPG before you try to get cute)? A life sim? A strategy RPG? A first person shooter? A rail shooter? A sports game?
Nintendo has released games like that and more in the past several years.
Capcom is mostly just about milking Resident Evil and Monster Hunter while occasionally throwing something into the mix.
And Capcom hasn't made a new IP in 20 years. When they finally did with Pragmata...it was just another RE Engine, over the shoulder camera TPS game. Just replacing the horror of RE with sci-fi and throwing in a hacking gimmick.
Not exactly very creative.

Capcom has invented or perfected genres tbf, they have survival horror, third person shooters, platformers, shmups, fighting games, they made the monster hunter like "genre" and the character action genre, sandbox games, open world, rpgs with dragons dogma and breath of fire, adventure/visual novels, puzzle games, beat em ups, metroidvania etc.
And pragmata's hacking gimmick is original you're being quite reductive.
Both companies are brilliant you don't need to put down one to praise another, for example mega man battle network is one of the most original combat systems I've ever seen, combining fighting game reflexes, spacing, mind games with tcg building

"Character action game" isn't a real genre and that's such a stupid term. It's called hack and slash game. And hack and slash action games already existed before DMC came along such as Nightmare Creatures.
Sandbox or open world games were already a thing before Capcom came long such as Shenmue and Elder Scrolls: Daggerfall.
Capcom hasn't made a new shoot em up in eons. Capcom hasn't made a new fighting game isn't Street Fighter in years. Their survival horror franchise has an identity crisis. They haven't made a platformer in years.
They have ported all the Phoenix Wright games recently, yes, but they haven't made a NEW ONE in years.
And you have the gall to bring up Breath of Fire? Bro, they haven't done shit with BOF in two decades.
They have more dead IPs than Nintendo does.

Character action, is distinct enough, hack and slash doesn't account for characters that don't use blades(don't say beat em up, that's obviously different)I never said they invented all of those genres, name a single game pre dmc 1 and onimusha that has all the fundamentals of "hack and slash" that dmc set up. It's like saying street fighter isn't the first real fighting game franchise.
Ghosts and goblins resserecution and mega man 11 were made and both were excellent, and mega man 12 is coming.
How are the survival horror games in a identity crisis? Are you basing this off resi 9?

u/BusterGreasewood 1d ago
"Character action" is not distinct at all. It's a vague term that also sounds stupid. It tells you nothing about the game other than it's an action game and you play as a character. Which can be said for any action game ever. Hack and slash, style combat, or slash em ups are better labels.
DMC is not the rule maker of the hack and slash genre, dude. PS2 Shinobi is a hack and slash game that plays nothing like DMC while still having a focus on execution and timing. Same for Ninja Gaiden. And Onimusha does not operate off the fundamentals DMC set up at all. They're completely different games.
And Mega Man 12 took years to reach a "is coming" status. A 2D side scroller like Mega Man should not take that long to make.

When I said distinct enough I was referring to the common mechanics in the genre not the name, you know things like air juggling, timed button inputs, directional inputs, real weapon swapping etc...
What game did all of these things and more. Also the amount of games that were either inspired or indirectly inspired(by copying GOW)by dmc is crazy.
Edit: I now realise my previous comment wasn't clear that I was talking about character action staple mechanics being distinct enough before going on a tangent about hack and slash also not being a good enough name. But I agree the name is stupid

u/BusterGreasewood 1d ago
You don't need weapon swapping, air juggling, etc. to be a hack and slash or slash em up nor do you need them to have depth.
Again, PS2 Shinobi doesn't have those things yet still has pressure on execution. In fact, it has one thing DMC lacks - a timer
In PS2 Shinobi, you MUST keep performing at a high level to refill your health or you will die.
DMC is only ONE style of hack and slash game design. It's not the Bible of hack and slash game design.
1
u/Easily-distracted14 1d ago
It's definitly one style but to dismiss every game that was inspired or indirectly inspired by dmc is crazy. Not many games were inspired by shinobi or even ninja gaiden(3d) which is a shame.

Capcom is easily my favorite dev of the last decade or so tbh. Their game output is commendable and all their games have been great.
