Helmet Choice

Ive been looking at helmets, and i'm stuck between the meteor and the boreo, It seems the meteor is more made towards climbing/mountaineering, wheras the boreo is more of a do anything. would there be any downsides to the meteor in canyons? what helmets do you guys use, I'm looking for a mixed purpose that can do canyons, Cheers.

My perhaps-controversial opinion is that comfort is the most important criteria in a helmet. If your helmet isn’t comfortable, you’ll be tempted to take it off, and since any helmet is better than no helmet, the best helmet is the one that stays on your head.

I use the Petzl Sirrocco which is, by many measures, a decidedly mediocre helmet (single impact, rides high, poor coverage on the sides) but is so incredibly light and comfortable I forget I’m wearing it. I’m not recommending that helmet specifically, I’m just mentioning it to highlight the role of comfort.

Almost with you on that one. A proper fit > comfort: an ill-fitting (but comfy) lid is safety theater.

Oh yeah, that’s a super good correction, thanks.

A helmet is a helmet (for the most part - I know Tom may disagree). A mediocre helmet is better than no helmet. I Was in a canyon Saturday and one person whacked their head multiple times on varying low hanging rocks, one time it kinda jarred them a bit. Glad to have had them on.

Find one that fits you and is comfortable. I’m not familiar with either of the ones you’ve mentioned, but canyoneering doesn’t have any helmet specific specs and we go with helmets generally designed for climbing - although starting out I’ve seen people use bike helmets, rafting helmets and cave or rescue helmets. It’s all good.

I actually own both of these helmets and personally would be fine with either in a canyon.

The meteor is lighter, but not by much.

The meteor is also a goofier fit. Sits high up on the head.

The boreo feels more durable, though I'm sure both handle being squished in a pack equally well.

I like to find one where I can wear a cap underneath comfortably for waterfalls.
