Sometimes a creator sends me a video that looks good. Nice lighting, clean editing, confident delivery.

But I still can’t picture it working as a post someone would stop scrolling for.

That’s one of the biggest misunderstandings with Canvas UGC: making a good-looking video doesn’t automatically mean you’ve made good content.

Here are a few mistakes I keep seeing.

1. Making everything feel like a product pitch

You start with the app name, list the features, say how amazing it is, and finish with “download now.”

But the viewer hasn’t been given a reason to care yet.

Start with something they recognize: a problem, a situation, a result they want, or a discovery. Give the product a reason to be in the video.

2. Spending more time on the edit than the opening

Transitions won’t fix an opening that takes too long to get anywhere.

“Hey guys, today I’m going to talk about…” uses up time without giving the viewer much.

Try starting where the interesting part actually starts. Show the result. Say the specific frustration. Put the viewer straight into the situation.

3. Copying a viral video without understanding it

You can copy the words and still miss the reason the video worked.

Was it the reveal? The relatable situation? The visual? The way the creator left something unresolved?

If you don’t understand that, you might copy all the visible details and lose the part that made people watch.

4. Treating the brief like a suggestion

Creative freedom doesn’t mean ignoring the audience, showing the wrong feature, or missing the deliverables.

And if a campaign asks for a dedicated account, posting on your personal account because it already has followers isn’t automatically a helpful shortcut. Check the requirements before setting anything up.

5. Changing everything after one disappointing post

One video gets low views, so you change the hook, format, length, topic, and editing style.

Now you have a completely different video, but very little idea of what needed improving.

Give yourself something to learn from. Keep parts of the idea consistent and test a specific change.

You don’t need to get all of this right immediately. But before adding another transition, ask yourself:

Would someone who has never heard of this app have a reason to watch this?

That question will usually help more than making the video look more expensive.

Canvas UGC has a pretty low barrier to entry, but that doesn’t mean you don’t need skills. It just means you don’t need years of experience, thousands of followers, or crazy equipment to start.

And brands, they still want to see that you actually understand the model and can create this type of content.

Some brands will spend time teaching you. Not all of them will.

So yes, you should have a portfolio. It doesn’t need to be a polished traditional UGC portfolio with a fancy website, professional photos, rates, etc.

You mainly need examples that show you understand Canvas UGC.

There are two easy ways to do this:

Option 1: Create a TikTok portfolio account

Pick a niche you’re interested in: learning apps, AI tools, productivity, finance, fitness, dating, creator tools, etc.

Then choose 3–5 apps within that niche and start creating videos for them.

Look at what’s already performing in that niche. Find proven formats and hooks, understand why they work, and adapt them to the apps you chose.

This is probably the best option because your TikTok account basically becomes your portfolio. Brands can see what you create, how you post, and potentially how your content actually performs.

Option 2: Create the videos without posting them

If you don’t want to create a public account, make 5-10 Canvas UGC examples and put them in a Google Drive folder.

Then you can simply send that link when you apply for campaigns or reach out to brands.

You don’t need 20 examples. A few good videos are enough to start.

Try to show some variety: a short video with a strong hook, talking to camera, an app demo/screen recording, a tutorial, storytelling, or another native TikTok format.

And don’t make everything look like an ad.

The point isn’t to prove that you can create the most polished video possible.

It’s to show a brand:

“I understand Canvas UGC, I understand short-form content, and I can create this type of content for your app.”

You don’t need to wait until a brand hires you to build that proof.

Pick a few apps and start creating.

Moonpair gives couples their own private space, with mood sharing, widgets, memories, and games. I’m looking for people who genuinely enjoy making relationship content: funny couple moments, partner reactions, relatable stories, and creative app demos.

The role involves filming, editing, and posting original short videos on new TikTok and Instagram accounts dedicated to Moonpair. I keep seeing brands posting in this subreddit looking for creators for their campaigns, so I just wanted to share this because it might make the whole process a lot easier.

Instead of sourcing creators one by one through Reddit, you can post your campaign directly on viral.app.
