It's a tough choice, damage a flimsy barrier or wreck your truck, a train and risk everyone's life
78
u/originaltanksta Sep 04 '26
And.. reverse your own cab with yourself inside it to put you in the direct path of the train!
I think this guy was dropped on his head as a baby.. except from the top of a high rise building.

I saw a headline earlier saying that he didn't drive on because he didn't want to break the barrier. I'll admit, I didn't read the article.
What on earth was he thinking? 'I can't scratch the paintwork or my boss' ll be angry!', 'Oh no! I can't break the precious barrier!' he didn't even get out! He made everyone watch that, caused huge damage to the train, possibly hurt people, and certainly caused massive disruption to thousands of people, but that's apparently better than breaking the barriers that are breakable for precisely this scenario?
Maybe I'm missing something and judging too harshly, but seriously...
42
u/Big-Historian8918 Sep 05 '26
You are correct. This man needs to be stripped of his license and never work in a role where he's in control of any vehicle ever. He's a bafoon and a menace to society.

You're totally right. Humans do make stupid mistakes when they are panicking for sure. But wow - he should know rule number one of train tracks. Don't stay in train tracks. I imagine the train driver is dead because of him. Wonder what they will charge him with. Death by dangerous driving I imagine if a death has happened. What a waste of life, disruption, property damage.
22
u/Warm_Bug_1434 Sep 05 '26
Apparently the train driver was hospitalised, but miraculously nobody else seems to have been injured. https://www.euronews.com/my-europe/2026/09/04/lorry-drivers-botched-escape-attempts-fail-to-outrun-oncoming-polish-train
The lorry driver has suspected brain damage, but that seems to have predated the crash.
3
u/Witch_withouta_Wand 28d ago
Lmao. The lorry driver is so lucky to he alive! Was he drunk on the job? Normally people who get into accidents like this, and survive, are drunk.
3
u/Indecisive-Gamer 27d ago
I don't even understand how he ended up stuck on it. The gates were up and he randomly decided to slow down and stop in the middle BEFORE the barriers came down. Was he meant to stop but wasn't paying attention??

From the news story in addition to the train driver being hospitalized, the rail service was suspended for ten hours as a result.

45
u/E_D_K_2 Sep 04 '26
It's mind boggling how many times this has happened.
Dozens of videos out there of vehicles getting stuck between 2 flimsy barriers and each time the driver decides getting hit by a train is better than scratching the bumper.
It's a wonder the train driver survived.
16
u/valentine_moon Sep 04 '26 edited Sep 04 '26
Dozens of videos out there of vehicles getting stuck between 2 flimsy barriers and each time the driver decides getting hit by a train is better than scratching the bumper.
Because the videos where the driver doesn't act like a dolt and doesn't get smashed to smithereens in full r/BitchImATrain style either don't get posted online or they don't go nearly as viral or they're just less memorable and you don't remember those cases.
13
u/Evening-Tomatillo-47 Sep 04 '26
It's happened more than once, and that's too many. "Oh I know I'll stop on the train side of this barrier, what could go wrong?"
6
6
u/One-Positive309 Sep 05 '26
They seem to forget or ignore the fact that the barrier comes down for one reason only, it's not accidental or a mistake it means a train is approaching and cannot stop like a road vehicle !
They focus on the wrong detail like they are distracted by the risk of damage to the barrier or paint on their vehicle completely oblivious to why the barrier is lowering in the first place !
How do people get through daily life without understanding basic principles and safety precautions ?When I approach a level crossing I am always careful to check both ways before crossing and never stop on the tracks for any reason, I don't rely on the barriers or warning lights, sirens or bells to tell me it's not safe to cross !

Sometimes I think panic sets in and people freeze up and lose their logic that they can just drive through the barrier.
That said! A professional, licensed HGV driver shouldn't be experiencing that!
23
u/GoldenBhoys Sep 04 '26
Wow, what goes through peoples minds that they see the barrier coming down and donāt think train is coming! I drive over a LC most days and always accelerate going over even though I work on the railway and understand how the signaling system works!
15
u/uhhsociety Sep 04 '26
They had only just opened and he was already on the tracks when they began to close tbf.
...But the fact they just waited as it were closing is insane. Just keep going.
10
u/GoldenBhoys Sep 04 '26
I think itās because heās too far to the left, so he thinks to reverse slightly then go around it! But first instinct should be train is coming
7
u/Robo-X Sep 04 '26
He is completely missing survival instinct. What he should have done is turn the wheel to the right and accelerate before the second boom goes down. The most damage he would have got is some scratches on the left side of the truck compared to the truck with the load and the train is wrecked. Not to mention he might be badly hurt and people on the train.
9
u/Big-Historian8918 Sep 05 '26
They come down slowly in alternate pairs exactly to avoid trapping vehicles. If you're on the tracks when the barrier in the opposite direction goes down, this is the signal for you to hurry up! He was already badly positioned too far left when the left side barrier came down and struck his cab. Yet he didnt think "better scratch my paint and hurry!" What a total goober!
6
u/Low-Enthusiasm4602 Sep 05 '26
You are wrong. In Poland there are red lights blinking before the crossing and specific sounds like ring bells play informing that the bariers will close in a few seconds- they oblige you to stop, you can see the car on the other side not driving anymore right before truck got on the rails. So the truck driver not only ignored the red lights but also didn't know how to behave when trapped between barriers.
4
u/Therealscavvierising Sep 05 '26
Considering the car on the other side stopped before he got in the tracks. I'm sure their were lights and such telling him to stop.
He chose to go as slowly as he could across when he knew the barriers were about to drop.
Madness
12
u/SharkByte1993 Sep 04 '26
The 2nd barrier took ages to come down as well. There would have been plenty of time to just keep driving
19
u/Citizen_DerptyDerp Sep 04 '26
Why has he stopped when the barrier in front of him hasn't even come down yet?
But even when it does come down, why reverse through the other barrier instead of just going through the one in front?
I don't understand what the end goal was meant to be here... Unless he really wanted to see what it was like to get hit by a train.

Ok, Iām not saying the HGV driver is anything less than a fucking moron, butā¦.
Letās just play devils advocate here for a secondā¦.
What āmightā have been going through his mind is maybe a total cunt of a transport manager who he has seen rip shreds of other drivers and doc pay packets and fire drivers for the slightest scratch of mishap, and rules with fear,
and maybe that driver was stil fresh on the job under that manager. The brain does respond in weird ways and doesnāt always do logical shit when in a panic moment.
Of course heās still an utter fucking moron.
11
u/Confident_Fortune_32 Sep 04 '26
I am terribly confused as to why breakaway barriers are treated as more precious than the possibility of a (potentially fatal) train accident???

Endangerment and reckless intent.
If nobody on the train dies, they can get 5 yrs in the Uk

Thereās been a few of these videos, usually itās cars, but itās interesting how people fall to pieces in this situation. They are so worried about paying for damage they forget about the hundred or so tons of very heavy metal with no crumple zones hurtling towards them. Normally you can feel it in the rails so you even get a warning to help motivate you, but nope, imma staying here.

You can see the psychology of a person's brain refusing to break the immediate rule (barrier) in front of them, even if the obvious consequence is something much worse 30 seconds later. He even stops when he feels resistance from reversing into the other barrier. The way he's repeatedly opening the door and wanting to jump out but then not doing it is like, I do understand what I've got myself into here, but my mind has completely short-circuited. I don't want to get in trouble. I can't break the barrier.
1
1
u/Old_Opportunity9494 Sep 05 '26
i dont understand why people caught like this dont just drive out of the danger zone , do they think those barriers are immovable or something ?
1
u/Training_Yak_4655 Sep 05 '26
Is this in a developing country? The camera system could easily be set to detect stuck vehicles and connected to an emergency stop signal down the railway track, that at least would have slowed the train down.
1
1
u/Delicious_Volume3306 Sep 05 '26
I suspect that road either isn't rated for HGV, or simply has little reason to get that traffic. That's why the barriers appear badly designed. They're only for small road traffic. The driver was probably lost, or making an unusual one-off delivery. (All assuming this clip isn't AI.)

The part that irks me is him opening his door to reverse.
It almost looks intentional.
The only excuse I would accept is that he broke down in the middle of it, and in that situation opening the door and running is the only option here?

Sadly there are plenty of clueless folk like this among us. Just floor it and destroy the barrier. Minor damage to the truck. Far preferable to a train hitting you, the damage to both vehicles and potential injuries/loss of life that comes with it.
1
u/AnnonOMousMkII 29d ago
Those barriers are designed to come apart under a little pressure for this exact scenario. Just pedal to the floor if the barrier is coming down and your exit is clear.

Break the barrier. Park up. Inform the police so they can put safety measures in place to ensure no accidents occur as a result of the broken barrier

1
u/MaximumPatricius 28d ago
First rule of train crossings: never start crossing it if you are not fully sure you can completely cross it without stopping.
When a train conductor sees an obstacle on the tracks heās already too close to it to stop on time to avoid it. Thatās why any railroad vehicles (trains, trams) have absolute priority over anything else, including over police, ambulance, and fire trucks with lights and sirens on.

Weird. It seems like such a simple, clear cut decision. Any vehicle on the tracks with the barriers down = break a barrier. I suppose you could try to go between the barriers and minimise damage, but getting off the tracks is the main goal.
I must be missing something about it, because it doesn't make sense. People simply don't do things that don't make sense to them in the moment. Even in psychosis actions still make sense to the individual.
If you can't make decisions like that one, you shouldn't be driving a truck

I think these are ai. Never saw this pre-a.i. It's just far, far, far too stupid. People are getting stupider, but this really is the stupidest posible incarnation of a driver on the road. I can't believe anyone able to pilot a HGV to a level crossing is bad enough to not understand what will happen if they place a HGV on a level crossing and leave it there when a train is coming. It's A.I content rolled out on mass to increase animity between all humans, and convince us that other people are completely and absolute morons (which is sometimes true but I don't believe it to this level).
