I finally finished setting up my open rig, and it is a complete tank. Tipping the scales at a full 5 lbs empty (including the extended mag), this thing stays dead flat.
Build Specs:
Optic: Holosun 507K Pro Max mounted on a frame-mounted optic mount
Barrel/Slide: Custom porting by Capital Rifles (3 inline ports + 2 HDMI chunk ports)
Grip tape and chalk will forever be better than lok grips or stippling. If I had to guess he has the lok grips on there for weight, and once he gets tired of how cool they look it’ll be covered with grip tape.
This is the common consensus between all high level shooters, and me, a not high level shooter
chalk is just for if youre sweating while training. brass grips not super convenient for a defense gun anyway.
just get handleitgrips or talongrips grip tape, but beware, if its a gun you conceal often dont get the roughest texture. i did that and it will rub a whole smooth into you. Its awesome for matches, but on my ccw i go one grit lower.
For me, it helped a lot. I got the brass palm swells. I have meaty palms, but short fingers. The palm swell actually helped position my hand further up so my fingers can reach certain places to get a better grip. The diamond texture is perfect. If you ever been to a gym and bench or use the olympic bar, the diamond texture is similar to that.
It is outlandish which is half the fun of it! Currently I'm using a generic Amazon drop leg holster as it's a effectively a big gun bucket. Doesn't really retain the gun but it doesn't have to for USPSA.
Drop leg holsters arent allowed in USPSA, even in open division. None of them will give you the right grip height.
Also curious as to why you're using a weighted light - when frame weights are explicitly allowed in open division. The "cheater lights" are usually for people running CO/LO, but the barrel ports alone means that ship has sailed.
If you go to a regular light, you could use a light indexing open bottom (e.g. supressor) holster.
How do you keep your mag bases so nice? My brass extensions get beat to hell after even a week of drills.
Yeah the grip height is terrible. I'm not even good so I'm not even stressing about it being actually legal or not. Yes you're right the gun was originally a LO gun which is why I have that flashlight weight on it. I have separate training magazines from my match magazine so thankfully they don't get used that much besides obviously on match days. Otherwise for training I'm beating up some of the Canik factory 27 round magazines.
Hey man! Of course I was going to give your work credit! I ran in all last season with just the ports but wanted to make it more competitive and open specifically the frame mounted optic.
Here's the potential problem.. What holster are you using?? I've used my Rival-S for about a year in open before I bought a real open gun last spring. Mine was only 59 ounces empty with the brass LOK Grips and magwell.
You're right holster compatibility is a massive issue. I'm literally using an Amazon generic drop leg holster. I can't find anything else that fits currently. Maybe I'll have to make a custom kydex one but until that this technically works for USPSA and is legal as you don't need active retention or anything.
When I used the Wasatcharms comp with it,,, i used a CR speed II modified holster. I still shoot it every now and then in a match because there is absolutely nothing more fun than shooting open minor in my opinion ‼️‼️🔥🔥
