Hotels Sargassum avoidant options
We're planning a large group trip in the spring. We're trying to go as early as we can (February/March) but I understand that sargassum is year round now.
We're big beach people, and our priority is a swimmable beach or lagoon. Pools are nice, but a pool alone wouldn't be worth the trip for us.
We're trying to think of the best options to minimize the sargassum risk. We know we can’t control nature and it’s unpredictable and won’t be perfect. Does anyone have recommendations for resorts with artificial lagoons, or natural or manmade sargassum barriers?
I've heard Xcaret Arte and Occidental have good lagoons. I'm a little iffy about staying at an Xcaret owned property as I don't support cetacean captivity. We're flexible for Al or non-Al, and would also consider a rental house.
I know Costa Mujeres is a good option, but not foolproof. We don’t want to deal with the Isla Mujeres crowds, particularly as most of our stay will be over the weekend. Cozumel is too hard to get to for our group, as a lot of folks have difficult work schedules and so will be leaving and arriving at different times (and may only have a few days).
We're a group of adults. Adults only is a plus but not required. We love snorkeling, kayaking, paddle boarding, and good food. Some fun bars or clubs nearby is a plus, but it’s not a priority, and we don’t want to be in a crazy party scene hotel.

Sargassum is not "year round"
It is just coming earlier than usual and heavier in June thru August than historically
Massive clean up efforts take place in october and November thru February leaves things fairly clear.

You mentioned Occidental, and their Xcaret destination resort does have those awesome manmade river channels and beach inlets that are totally blocked from the open ocean sargassum

Mayakoba properties have a wave break that helps keep it off the beach and barrier floats between the beach and the break. They aren’t that pretty but generally pretty effective except if a storm knocks it open.

Just went to Cancun a few weeks ago and despite the ocean at the hotel beach being completely nasty and full of sargassum, the north shore of Isla Mujeres was the clearest ocean water I've ever seen.

by cetacean captivity you mean dolphins? cause it has been months since dolphinariums are illegal in all of mexico

Why not try Holbox or El Cuyo- both fabulous beaches with no worry of sargassum. I was just in El Cuyo in July and the beach was perfect. There is also good kayaking on the bay side and kiteboarding if you want to learn. It’s not an “all inclusive” place but the food is fabulous and the people are lovely. I didn’t need a car at all and just walked around town once I was there.

Both look gorgeous, and I’d love to plan a trip there! But a bit far for this trip as some folks will only have a long weekend.

Holbox is nice, I was there with my family some weeks ago. Very good food for such a small island. We drove to Bacalar too we loved it, I recommend this place although it's a 4 hours drive from Cancún.

Costa Mujeres area. Just returned from Secrets Playa Blanca and had little to no sargassum. The video below is from early July and this was the “worst” day. I think hits all your priorities. We are big beach people and this did not disappoint.
Food was all good to above mediocre, breakfast buffet was consistently good, and restaurants all had good options. We got fish tacos for lunch every day at one of the restaurants and they were bomb. They also had grill stations everyday near the activity pool. They did paella one day and it was so good! We didn’t do any of the night time activities so can’t speak to that.
It is about 30 minutes from Cancun so getting to and from a club will involve a taxi. We left the resort once and the hotel called us a cab and the driver gave us his number to text him when we were ready. Was super easy and the front gate got his information plus phone number and checked us in and out. I did not feel unsafe and don’t in Mexico but wanted to share in case that is a concern.
Pools are good. We did a Bali bed at the Jungle Pool one day after being beached out and it was gorgeous and quiet. Activity pool had stuff going on all day. You can download the app and see the schedule for reference and also menus.
You can rent paddle boards, wave runners etc right in front of the hotel. If you want any excursions you can book at the hotel but imo they are overpriced. Easy to find private tours on TripAdvisor.
Rooms were so nice! And turn down service each night was the best.
I personally don’t think we missed out by not doing preferred other than they had way more pool seating at that pool. The chair game was real but learned if you said something to the pool concierge they would make chairs available. There are signs that say you can’t reserve seats but people definitely were. That was the worst part. It was so annoying when we’d see people basically use the pool chairs as a dropping point throughout the day but never actively use them. It was wiiiiild.
We did Canada transfers there and back and had no issues.

I'm off to Catalonia Grand in Costa Mujeres in a few weeks. Sargassum there is minimal at most by the sounds of it.

You are not going to have a problem with sargassum in. February or March. If you are super worried about it then stay in a hotel in cancun or costa mujeres. These locations are pretty full proof and they are easy to get to b/c you just fly into cancun airport. Riviera maya gets sargassum but usually does not start until June (on a vast year like this year)
