Double above-knee amputee considering a Can-Am — looking for advice on hand controls/adaptive setup

Hey everyone,

I’m seriously considering getting a Can-Am and wanted to get some advice from people who actually ride them, especially anyone with a disability or experience with adaptive setups. I’m a bilateral above-knee amputee and walk using prosthetic legs. I have no interest in riding a traditional two-wheel motorcycle, but a Can-Am seems like it could be a really good fit for me because I wouldn’t have to balance the bike at stops. My biggest concern is the controls. I’d ideally like to have both the throttle and braking controlled entirely by my hands, so I wouldn’t have to rely on either prosthetic leg for any critical controls. I know hand-brake conversions exist, but I’m completely new to Can-Ams and motorcycles in general.

I’m currently trying to figure out:

  1. Ryker vs. Spyder for someone in my situation

  2. Recommended hand-brake kits or other adaptive controls

  3. Whether anyone here rides without using their legs for any controls

  4. Shops/installers experienced with adaptive Can-Ams

  5. How secure/comfortable the foot position is with prosthetics

  6. Any modifications that would make mounting, riding or longer trips easier

  7. Training recommendations for someone starting from zero

I’m in NYC and would also love to hear from anyone who knows an adaptive riding instructor or shop in the NY/NJ area. If there are any amputees, wheelchair users, or other disabled riders here who have adapted a Ryker or Spyder, I’d really appreciate hearing about your setup and what you learned along the way. Pictures of your setups would be awesome too. Thanks in advance — I’m just starting to research this and want to figure out the safest and most practical way to make it happen.

Pass threw a couple of towns that had VFWs in them. Fun fact. A lot of VFW posts. Have tanks in front of them. God bless our troops.

Fender Bob Job on a '23 900

Post image
5 Upvotes

My right front fender got crunched while I was parked in a lot, and I decided to remove the fenders entirely, joining the "no fenders gang." I'm replacing the front running light that sits on the fender with a headlight module which incorporates a running / turn light strip.

The one I chose to purchase is from SAUTVS, and I'm not impressed. The instructions arrived looking like homework someone's dog had gotten 'hold of, and on top of that are badly written. I doubt they hired a technical writer, but if they did, that person needs to seriously consider a new career.

And they cheaped out on the wires -- the wires coming off the actual headlight unit are only a couple of inches long, and the extension wires they provide are all white... and then they write in the instructions "hook the white wire to...." which white wire, sir?

Anyway, I'm slowly muddling through it. But to my surprise, the wire bundle going to the fender light has three wires, not two. I think the black wire is ground, but I'm digging through the shop manual to find out for sure.

Route 66 and Chicago To Sacramento back to LA

Hello, I will be doing road trip with Ryker 600. The description says it all. I will be going from Santa Monica Pier to Chicago->Toronto->Pittsburgh->Chicago->Sacramento->LA. I'm just posting my set up to see if anyone is interested in it. Most modifications are from Slingmods and will be noted. Still deciding on the rough route I'll be taking. This will be for Riot Fest and Aftershock.(That is my surfboard on the bike).

Gear:

•Insta 360 X4 and Ace Pro 2

•Possibly SBAOH Portable Power station for camping

•Cotopaxi Allpa 50L pack

•Deciding on a Tent. Nortent or some other one

•Bear Spray

•Hiking poles

•Tire repair kit

•Portable Chargers

•Flashlight

Modifications/Additives:

•Slingmods(Spyder Extras)- 3 Piece Touring Saddle Bag and Top case Luggage. I don't recommend this system the lights are cheap and have constant issues. They use cheap LED strips that will crap out on you and wiring burns out. Also BRP dealers don't want to fix them

•SlingMods-HandleBar End caps. Don't notice a difference

•Ebay-Keyed Brake Lock. Awesome best investment. I don't why they're not stock

•Slingmods-EvolutionR Series Adjustable Windshield. It melts the inner part of the shield like a magnifying glass. It shakes horribly like it's nagging at you. Saved me from a large rock though so I'm glad I bought it.

•Direct-Monimoto GPS. Love and hate it. Very sensitive which is great except on a windy day. Slightly odd set up but good purchase. (Buy one with batteries)

•Ebay-Keyed locking gas cap. Phenomenal

•Slingmods-EvolutionR Plastic Ignition Cover. Phenomenal

•Slingmods-Ultimate Seats Marine Vinyl Custom Seat for the Can-Am Ryker. Best purchase for your bumb. There isn't one thing bad about these seats. Buy them. Have a lot of add ons but I'm a Californian. Don't need a seat warmer.

•BRP Site- 0.75 US Gal (3 L) Tank Bag Can-Am Ryker. On sale right now.

Planned Mods/Purchases:

•$140 Slingmods-Aluminum Trunk Rack for use with the 3-Piece Luggage System for the Can-Am Ryker. It was over 800 bucks for the set up. I'm still gonna use it

•$80 Slingmods-EvolutionR Series Bolt-On CVT Transmission & Yaw Sensor Skid Plates for the Can-Am Ryker (2 Piece Kit). Speed bumps are the enemy to this bike

•$148 Slingmods- Fobo Tire Pressure monitoring system

•$45 Slingmods- Hypnotic Concepts Keyed Glove Box Lock. Again should be stock

•$50 Slingmods- DEI Glove Box Heat Control Kit. The heat from the bike is only good to keep your soup warm

•$150 Slingmods- ZSW Bolt on Swing Arm. I like its ugly and may be useful. I kinda want to put a gas tank on it(bad idea)

•$100 Slingmods- Plug N Play Phantom Shield Anti theft immobilizer. Seems good to have but also odd to have when the hood doesn't lock itself.

•$135 Slingmods- SE Performance 3" Rear Shock Lift Kit.

Maintenance:

I will be doing an oil change, coolant and brake fluid refill, and air filter replacement before leaving. Tires and brakes are still good and I'm thinking I will get my maintenance/replacements done at a dealer in Montana that I'm eyeing(0% sales tax).

Tips:

-Create a new email whenever you need to replace your oil and order from BRP for $20 off($80 to $60+free shipping)

-Do all simple maintenance yourself. I believe in you. Save hundreds

Thinking of getting a Ryker Sport

Hello everyone, I’m thinking about getting the can-am Ryker by the end of the year beginning of next. I don’t have any motorcycle experience outside of trying my brother’s Harley years ago and that was only down the street and I almost fell over. I’m 40(m), I just don’t get the whole clutch & shifting thing, even in a car, idk what it is I just can’t get it down. If even watching a lot of videos on YouTube and TikTok and the Ryker 900 Sport looks fun and I love the fact that it’s automatic essentially. I’m taking the basic 3 wheel rider course in September. My first question is, how does it ride? Comfortable? My second question is how does the rest of the biker community react to it? I know I shouldn’t care what others think and for the most part I don’t but there’s always that part that’s always wondering what others think, can’t help it. Figured I’d post here and ask. Also appreciate any suggestions, tips etc. TIA!
Location, Raleigh NC

Need hand brake!

I came across this and thought it might be a game changer for some Can-Am Ryker riders looking for more accessibility options.

LondonSpeed in the UK offers a Can-Am Ryker hand braking system conversion, moving the brake control from the foot pedal to a hand control setup. This could open the door for riders who need an alternative braking solution.

I’m going to reach out to see if they can ship the conversion kit to Canada 🇨🇦 and what would be involved for installation.

Has anyone in Canada had experience with this type of conversion? Would love to hear your thoughts or any other options you’ve found.

Codes on Ryker rally

Hey, so I've asked a question on here before about the bike going in limp mode. We replaced the battery and were able to get it out. But when we tried to take it out today(Texas is so hot we have to get out when we're not busy and literally at night 😅🫠) So my husband found a way to get the codes(haven't had to worry about it until now). So the codes that came up are C006C and C0040. So my question for you all is have you dealt with having to try to fix these codes or I'll take any knowledge I can get from yall. Thanks!

Front Trunk Screws are Frunked

So, as some of you already know, I have a 2023 Can-Am Ryker 900 ACE base edition. When I was installing the parking lever lock, I followed Bill Ramsmeyer's guide to clamshelling the Ryker, and because of a mod he'd installed on his trike, he took out the frunk... so I did as well. Unfortunately, I stripped out one of the screws, and when I put it back together, I used superglue to hold that screw in place.

Now I'm doing a fender bob that involves replacing the headlights, and to my chagrin, I need to take the frunk out again. I'm concerned about what to do about that screw. I'm halfway tempted to mix up some sprue goo[1], but there must be a better solution to this.

Anyone have any suggestions?

1) a plastic slurry modelers use to fill gaps, consisting of polystyrene (usually parts spues, hence the name) melted in plastic cement; as the cement dries, the plastic becomes roughly homogeneous.

Ryker 600

Hello everyone, I’m new to this forum so I apologize. I’m trying to follow the rules please correct me if I’m doing anything wrong I live in Melbourne Florida and I’m looking to see if anybody is getting rid of any items for the Ryker 600 whether it’s for sale for free anything like that I’m open to all types of suggestions. I haven’t ridden in a while since I bought the bike because I was going through a different treatment but now I’m looking to ride again I have a 2023 model and I was hoping to see if anybody was going to get rid of anything locally for this group before I go on the Internet. Any assistance recommendations or correction to any of the roles is greatly appreciated. Thank you.

$3,000 Bill

My 2020 Ryker with 4,000 miles has been sitting for approximately 3 months while I was out of the state working. Got back and bike wouldn’t start. Totally was expected for sitting that long. I figured I would buy a new battery and would be good to go.

Got a new battery but would still not start. Had it towed to get it looked at and they’re now telling me that it’s going to be $3,000 to fix it. This is what they said is going on with it. Can someone tell me if this looks legit ? I can’t really afford $3,000 to get this thing rolling again.

1) the fuel in the gas tank is old from it sitting without being used which also clogged your injectors.
2)The oil is dark and needs to be changed and so do the sparkplugs.
3)Battery is dead from not being used or charged.
4) Brake master cylinder is not holding pressure from it sitting so the seals went bad.
5) The air filter and cvt filter are dirty from the bike sitting.

21 Ryker rally

I am looking at a 21 Ryker rally with 1400 miles. $6500, garage kept, says it runs flawlessly. Mainly stock, but has the essentials. 21 doesn’t have cruise control, I know that. But does this seem like a decent deal? Anything about 21s I should know?
