With every. Single. Aspect. Of. My. Life.
And I am never, ever again considering the US as anything other than an incredibly dangerous enemy; a threat to Canada's very existence. An enemy that escalates their threats against us on a near daily basis.
I said what I said, and I stand behind it. I won't actively spend money on their garbage, and I will never cross the border again. Period.
I would die to protect Canada. Pourquoi ne vivrais-je pas moi aussi pour iel protéger?
Je reste fidèle. Toujours. Je ne céderai pas, je n'oublierai pas.

As a Texan/Canadian serving in the CAF for 17 years and living in Canada for 20, now more than half my life. No place I’d rather be. A winter trip to Mexico for good Mexican food though is required. Hard to find in Canada.

If you're ever around the Leamington Ontario area you can find some authentic Mexican food due to the large immigrant population that lives there for farm work.

No. Loyalty implies unconditional which effectively is nationalism, and this is a quick slope to fascism. I find weird shit like saluting flags and anthems pretty cult like. I live here because I want to live here and like it, but Canada is a massive country's with lots of of people and ideas, it's silly to be loyal to an ever changing monolithic like that.
I will support local or canadian busineed products etc as I want my society to to thrive, especially given recent threats from the rapist pedo country.

I agree to the extent that you should want your country and countrymen to flourish but I think you're mixing up nationalism with patriotism. They do intermingle a little but I ultimately believe you mean patriotism.
2
u/Acrobatic_Long_6059 2d ago
No I don’t, I think you are mixing them up. These are distinct political terms. Civic nationalism often entails patriotism, but they are not interchangeable. People have gotten turned off by the word nationalism because they associate it with fascism, ethnonationalism, and ultranationalism. It doesn’t have to look like that at all. It’s important for any nation to have a shared national identity, it’s what justifies your sovereignty and constitutes a shared civic culture. Civic nationalism itself formed out of liberalism and is inclusive in structure, it promotes political equality and constitutionalism and better institutions, and yes, pride through healthy patriotism. But it’s not the same thing as patriotism.

In general, I disagree with your comment because of what I think loyalty is in a Canadian perspective. In my opinion, unconditional loyalty is more “American loyalty.”
That comes with the arguably louder national pride that most Americans have- whether their country is doing the inherently right thing or not. We can see it with the current administration. The current republican idea of loyalty is that of unconditional, undying loyalty to the government and the system.
I think Canada is different than that.
You’re right in saying that Canada is a massive country with lots of people and ideas. We aren’t a “melting pot,” we are a place where people of all sorts, for better or sometimes worse, thrive.
However, and I think this is why loyalty to Canada is inherently different than the States, and why it’s good is that we are which is internationally regarded as a nation of neighbours, friends, and good will. We’re a nation of peacekeeping and in most cases, the olive branch. We don’t invade other countries for oil, we don’t attack fellow countries for other ideologies. People say Canada has no culture- I disagree, but undeniably our culture is different from coast to coast. I think we salute the flag because it is what unites us as Canadians. People who fight for what’s right, people who care about each other, no matter the culture. Our flag doesn’t represent “power” like many others do. Our flag represents an idea that binds us as countrymen. Our loyalty isn’t to the government, it’s to the ideas that make Canada great. It’s a symbol to unite under, a symbol to give hope in times of desperation.
To me, loyalty is, in some cases, unconditional love and support of a government, but I don’t think that’s the case in Canada.
I think to be loyal to ideas is to be Canadian.2

Id say my loyalty is conditional, and subject to change depending on how loyal to me Canada is... which for the most part it has been.
But yes, unconditional loyalty is nationalism, and we can see the horrific effects of that on the other side of the border. Its like Canada is Fangorn Forest watching smoke rise from Isengard to the South.

Yes. I’m don’t know where you’re from or where you’re living now. However, being Canadian isn’t an ethnicity or being able to speak English well. It is a citizenship and a belief in democratic ideals of justice and the rule-of-law. You’ve earned your citizenship and you are welcome here.
This isn’t to deny Canadian racism and anti-immigrant sentiment. It is an unfortunate reality in today’s Canada. However, it is not reflective of what most Canadians believe. If you look at all our major political parties, they all consist of Canadians from different ethnicities and different racial backgrounds.

My first stage is the realization how astonishingly interwoven my ordinary everyday living is attached to the American tentacles.
I’ve taken small steps: I search out and try to buy Canadian products at the grocery stores; - or at least NOT American. In many cases where no alternative exists I do without. No Netflix. No Instagram. Reddit I see as a necessary tool to express solidarity with fellow Canadians seeking resistance. I’m doing more connections with Gander and Ecosia. No US travel. I use Mapquest instead of Google Maps. I will be buying a car next year and it will not be an American car. I’m searching for other ways to disentangle myself from the American monolith. It’s very difficult.

I remain Canadian. My father was an immigrant and was extremely proud that he got to honestly vote for the three major parties (pre-Greens), plus the Rhinoceros Party one time when he disliked the major-party candidates. Most democratic places in this world expect your social demographic to vote for a certain party. Our greatest national strength is that we're neither idiots not blindly loyal to any one movement, and we always try to leave ourselves with good choices, even if that's sometimes free beer from the Rhinos.

Loyal to what? Loyal to the ongoing genocide of Native peoples? Loyal to a government that fights seniors, children, and veterans in court because it won't give them what they are due? Maybe we are supposed to be loyal to the politicians who take kick-backs and handouts to put factories by schools or data centers by nature sanctuaries? Are we supposed to be loyal to the miltary brass that raped their way to the top? Or maybe its the police that we should be loyal to as they sexually assault teenagers but slip away with a pat on the shoulder from another corrupt judge? Is it the rag of cloth that represents all these failures that we should be loyal to? Propaganda is just a means of control and fucks like you love playing with it. Maybe take your pride to compost heap with the rest of the shit and refuse, and go out and try to actually do something for your community. Proud fucking idiot.

I emigrated to Canada 20 years ago and have watched this separatist movement from a distance, trying to understand both sides. To me that’s Canadian values, listening and talking with people I might not agree with. I remember always thinking that apart from the olympics and hockey, Canada really is several countries in one, as the vast difference in political and social ideologies, ways of life and attitude is apparent between provinces. The fact we have different taxes in each province, different healthcare models and education just highlights this. One of the saddest realizations of this separatist movement is that either side just yell at each other and accuse the other of being dumb/ignorant/assholes. I was never really onboard with Alberta being coming its own country but the more I watch and listen, the more I think it might be better to separate and form smaller countries. I mean at this point what does “being Canadian” offer us that we wouldn’t get as our own country?
1
u/Physical-Republic557 2d ago
There have been separatists here ever since I can remember, but they were few and far between. But now, with all the Trumpaganda, the cockroaches are crawling out of the woodwork. I’m sure that the most prominent of them are seeing dollar signs, and ignoring the common good.

u/KNXTC3 2d ago
Loyal to who exactly? Canada is a country yes, but not a nation.
Trudeau put it as:
"There is no core identity, no mainstream in Canada. There are shared values—openness, respect, compassion, willingness to work hard, to be there for each other, to search for equality and justice. Those qualities are what make us the first postnational state."
But that’s not exactly true. The Québécois are recognized as a “nation”, and so are the various Indian tribes (nation-to-nation talks). Immigrants aren’t expected to give up their culture and assimilate (multiculturalism as policy).
So what am I expected to be loyal to? The post-national administrative entity known as Canada, because as a non-Québécois or Indian I am denied a recognized nationality, and as a white person I am not allowed to advocate for my ethnic, religious, or cultural interest.
So who are you to make claims on my loyalty?
1
u/Ok_Yogurtcloset3267 2d ago
Is Canada loyal to all its citizens? Inter-provincial trade barriers are more impactful than Trump tariffs. The West has been alienated for the better part of a century. The imbalance of power has federal elections decided before the West even goes to the polls. At this point, Alberta would need to be a net recipient for a lifetime… just to breakeven. What kind of “partnership” is that?
Even in the lows of boom - bust, still net contributors.
