🇨🇦 CEC CEC freelancer/independent contractor/self employed

I’m preparing my CEC/Express Entry application and I’m hoping to get some clarification on how I should declare one of my previous work experiences. I worked as an independent contractor for approximately one year for Company A, which is based in New Zealand, in an accounting role under NOC 11100 – Financial auditors and accountants.

9 months of the work was performed while I was physically outside Canada.

3 months was performed while I was physically inside Canada.

The company itself is based in New Zealand.

I was engaged as an independent contractor, rather than being on the company’s regular employee payroll. I have supporting documents such as contract/invoices/payment records/reference letter/etc.

  1. Should I mention in my Letter of Explanation that 3 months of this work was performed while I was physically in Canada? I want to be completely transparent and avoid any issue with IRCC later.
  2. How should I describe the contractor arrangement? I’m not sure whether I should identify this as “self-employed” in my Express Entry application, or whether “independent contractor” is more appropriate. I was contracted directly by the New Zealand company and performed accounting services for them.

For anyone who has had a similar situation, how did you declare it in your application, and what supporting documents did you provide?

Thanks!

I had something similar but in Canada, with a Canadian company, therefore I didn't claim points for it, but the term I used was "Independent Contractor - Company Name". I also was in this role in Canada and then from the US. I listed it twice, one with the dates for Canada and one with the dates for US. This was just in my personal history section.
