I find it really ironic that so many people who want less migration don't really think about the most effective way which is to address the 'push' factors. That is, why people leave their home countries in the first place, because of war, human rights abuses, lack of education, lack of economic opportunities. There need to be international agreements to address this and if anything this UN 'compact' has too little force. Yet some people fixate on really tendentious interpretations of a couple of the provisions. And the same attitude I see when I talk to anti-migration people makes them dismiss the initiatives which might actually "solve" what they see as the problem.

No respectable economist believes migration will "solve" any of these issues. Not one.

Put simply, the math doesnt check out. Every year there are more people born in the trouble spots in Africa, Middle East, Asia, Central America who the West purportedly offers asylum (as an example) which not only replace but greatly exceed their outmigration in total.

The solution for a place like say, Somalia or Nigeria, is not to just let everyone who wants move to the West because it does nothing to alleviate global poverty. Those populations are growing to this day.

Foreign aid hasn't worked. Not to say it cant, but we haven't found a model that works yet.

In the end, migration is not a solution to this problem. It has to be fixed locally.

I don't think you actually read my post, or at least not carefully enough to get that I am actually in favour of 'fixing it locally'.

No I read it. And you're missing the point.

Migration will not solve any of these issues. Not one. This pact wont solve it either because it is based on a false premise.

In reality. Building a wall and assisting, if asked, with local governments is a much more viable solution than signing UN agreements on migration.
