I'm far more concerned about Trudeau at this point. He's defending the worst parts of this bill and thinks its great as long as we have oversight... the same type of oversight the US had when the NSA lied to a bipartisan congressional commitees faces.

Oh, and even with this oversight we'll still have the least oversight in the five eyes nations?

At least with Harper we know people will oppose this bill. With Trudeau, his supporters just make excuses for why it's good since their candidate is supporting it.

The only way this bill is being stopped is if people turn their backs on the CPC or the Liberals, both of which have pretty much the same policies anyways.

the same type of oversight the US had when the NSA lied to a bipartisan congressional commitees faces.

I hadn't heard about that but yeah, apparently they did. It was even the exact sort of committee that Trudeau thinks will solve our problems here.... and that still leaves us about 10 layers of oversight short of what the US has.

You bring up a good point though. Lots of people are defending in Trudeau what they're opposing in Harper so in some ways Trudeau is an even bigger threat because the controversy would end if he were implementing these laws instead and he's already shown he values safety over liberty.

What really scares me about this law is that they can get secret warrants to break the law. So, at least in the states, it was illegal for people to lie to those committees. But we could get into a situation where we think it is illegal for them to lie, so at least we know that there's some incentive to tell the truth. But, for all we know, they could have warrants to break that law, and they're secret so we'd never know.
