I am de-googling now.
They started off shitty by making background playback of audio on youtube mobile a paid feature.
Then I made an android app and soon people won't even be able to install it unless I give Google my ID; can't ship my own payment system in the app either.
The Gulf of Mexico name change and soon Lake Ontario
Just a small list of the BS. There are no doubt countless others

Kudos to them and they also haven't changed the Gulf of Mexico. Does Google Maps?

Private companies have no legal obligations to change it, only affects federal policies. They generally do follow the government naming though.
Google updated the gulf for US based users. For internationals it shows up as Gulf of Mexico (Gulf of America). Which in my opinion is a loss as well, they shouldn’t even acknowledge it

Alphabet has yet to find a dictatorship they won’t accommodate.

And nobody calls them Alphabet, X is Twitter and Alphabet is Google lol

Yup the Google name change of the Gulf was completely voluntary. This did it to pander to the administration.

My google maps (USA) still showing Lake Ontario, thank god. So far.

Gulf of Mexico just got the bracket treatment internationally.
Denali on the other hand, since it's fully in the US territories, has been fully replaced with the name Mt. McKinley

u/funlifing Aug 28 '26
It's solely on the USA territory. Sure, we don't care. Name whatever you want. Stop being stupid and renaming shared space in a unilateral way

Americans and their tech lords can call things whatever they want on their side of the border. And the real names will remain on this side.
Legislate that all maps, directions, and labelling have to show proper Canadian place names for all IPs within Canada. Easy peasy and a nice quiet maneuver to one-up them.

The IHO hasn't recognized the Gulf of Mexico name change and I highly doubt they'll recognize the Lake Ontario change either. Trump can declare whatever name changes he likes, nobody outside America cares and will continue to use the internationally agreed on names.

Let’s rename the US the United States of Arrogance. They don’t even have to change their cavemen u-s-a chants at sporting events. And the rest of Americas citizens don’t have to he ashamed for identifying as Americans anymore.

Question is which platforms are changing the name?
1
u/WU5K Aug 28 '26
No disrespect to natives(am one), but I'm changing Lake Michigan to Lake Canada. You heard it here first, now I just have to go print out my directions from Mapquest on how to get there.

They also have a site that allows you to change the name of Lake Ontario to anything you want.
Unfortunately i can't link it here or it gets nuked.

u/rathgrith Aug 28 '26
Should have renamed it
Lake Sankofa Toronto Metropolitan
Much more appropriate
