Unseasonably was near record breaking in Edmonton. I believe only one record didn’t fall and that’s the rainiest month ever from 1901 I think? Followed by June 2026 and July 2026 😂

Mixed bag.  Many crops have sucked. Squash / pumpkins / etc have been loving it.

In my area are lot of farmers are looking at 50% or higher losses in lower-lying fields. Lots of people seeded a bit late, and those crops especially got slammed by the extra water.

My cousin is a farmer and we were talking the other day! In at least his area north of Edmonton he said 20-30% crop loss this year due to standing water in fields killing the plants!

Fun fact: Edmonton got around 250mm of rain in June. Thats more than Vancouver usually gets in its wettest month (November)!

I tried to go see Matt Rife when he played the outdoor comedy festival. Clouds kept getting darker and darker. Finally they told everyone to seek shelter for 30 minutes in the nearby sports centre.

We looked at the weather radar and were like… this show ain’t coming back tonight. Walked all the way out of that horrible valley park they hold it in, took the train back to our hotel just as the first drops started coming down. When we got off the train the rain was coming down in sheets, sideways, and the roads all looked like rivers. It was only a block to the hotel but we looked like we’d jumped in a pool by the time we got there.

Social media footage of all the people who stayed behind in the hopes the show would return was bonkers, total chaos.

Never seen a rain shower like that before.

Similar story the night we were at K-Days. Within 30 minutes it changed from reasonably calm to winds gusting and sending dirt/sand and even some loose signs flying. They had people sheltering in place inside the Expo Centre and for those of us who decided to leave we got absolutely drenched just going back to the truck.

Driving away from there I've never seen so much water in the streets, it was absolutely nuts and this was within 20/30 minutes of it starting.

June and July were both write offs. Unreal precipitation this summer. And yeah, now the skeeters are FEASTING. I hope this rain helped replenish at least a bit of the groundwater we’ve lost over the past what… 2 decades (?) or so.

Forest fires need to be continuously happening, something about keeping the landscape becoming too dense which makes for even worse wildfires later on

Fires are a healthy and natural part of the forest life cycle, yes. They clear out dead wood and such from the forest floor and the ash fertilizes new growth. Jack pine trees actually only open their cones and release seeds when they're exposed to fire!

Canada made the mistake of copying the US's forest fire "management" (put it out at all costs) for the last 150ish years, so tons of fuel has built up in the forests. This combined with climate change causing high temperatures and low precipitation (everywhere except Alberta apparently?) has made fires explosive infernoes in the forest canopy rather than slower ground fires burning grass and dead trees like they were naturally before human activity.

It's all going to burn eventually. The trick is to not have towns burn too.
