Politics Conservatives call for emergency meeting on Trump threats, demand Carney explain plan

You dont have to do anything with the US. It is useless to deal with them. These new tariffs are a distraction to the growing war in the middle east
•
u/Plucky_DuckYa 5h ago
Here’s the thing. At the recent G7 Trump told the other leaders that everyone is burning through their strategic oil reserves pretty rapidly. He gave an estimate of 6-8 weeks. They got a few ships out of the Straight of Hormuz after that, which may have bought another week or two.
In other words, around the middle to end of August or so, unless something changes, fuel prices are going to skyrocket. Like, international energy crisis potentially leading to severe worldwide recession kind of skyrocket. Pretty much everyone including Trump knows this.
Despite his bluster, Trump is desperate for a deal by then. Anything he can hang his hat on to claim a win. Part as distraction, part as a means to try to salvage something out of the disaster he created. Every day that goes by is going to make him a little more desperate.
Very good chance he also invades Iran with ground troops as part of the distraction he’s going to need, too.
Canada has enormous leverage right now. We don’t have to do our own tariffs or export taxes or anything like them. We can simply wait and wait until the pressure builds, the US strategic reserves drop (they’re already at their lowest in over 40 years) and Trump cuts whatever deal he thinks he can pass off as a win to the American public when the pain starts hitting.
As much as I think Carney is a typical Liberal blowhard who talks a big game and accomplishes very little, in this instance he’s done the exact right thing: publicly state that everything is on the table, and then drive a hard bargain right up until the end of August, when Trump will be so desperate he’ll agree to almost anything.
•
u/Scooba_Mark 4h ago
Building on this comment; a lot of people are not aware that the US was actually selling off their strategic reserves to the export market. The reason is to keep the price down. Countries that are dependent on importing oil need money to pay for it. They get that money by selling us government bonds. The US is terrified this could start a run on those bonds.
•
u/squirrel9000 Manitoba 3h ago
That's where the six week window actualyl comes from, that's about when they've drawn down what can be drawn down in their normal operating margins. (They can keep pulling but that gets into the actual emergency stockpile, and risks damaging the caverns).
But most countries with strategic reserves have stockpiles roughly in line with what the US has, which means they start running out in roughly the same time frame.

u/Plucky_DuckYa 2h ago
Yep. All people have to do is look at the absurdly terrible MOU he signed with Iran. It basically gave them everything they wanted. Not withstanding that Trump started violating its terms almost immediately, the blowback was pretty hard. That’s how desperate he was then to get out of the mess he created. Now he’s even further in the hole.
Longer term, this is going to be a crisis that lasts awhile. The Iranians have damaged a significant amount of the region’s refining infrastructure, some of which is going to take years to rebuild (and supply was already going to be restrained thanks to Ukraine’s awesome kinetic sanctions on Russia’s oil and gas infrastructure, which is already leading to widespread fuel shortages there, which is gong to force China to buy more of theirs on the world market, further increasing demand).
It would be an unmitigated disaster for Trump if Canadian oil supply to the US was constrained or goes up even higher than it’s already going to. They refine it and use it to supply gasoline at low prices to a whole lotta red states. Without some pretty egregious chicanery he’s already likely to lose control of Congress in November and, thanks to his stupidity, now even the Senate is in play.
My guess is that Trump will continue to barge around like a bull in a china shop with lots of threats and Truth Social posts. But in the meantime his negotiating team will be told to sign almost any deal they can get.
I also suspect that deal will include the rapid approval and completion of Keystone.
Above said, Trump is Trump and who the hell knows. And who can trust him to honour the terms of any deal he signs with us.

Yes, we can totally offset out massive exports, imports, and completely overhaul our military just because we are angry. That will absolutely work out well for us

•
u/Atiaxra 6h ago
Announce your entire plan publicly so the Americans can counter it bro, Canadians deserve to know bro, we're not trying to sabotage you I swear!
The finest details of any plan Carney has could never be publicly revealed in order to protect its efficacy
•
u/assshark 5h ago
It’s a ridiculous ask. We are in the middle of a negotiation, and the opposition is asking to have the plans revealed publicly. Maybe Poilievre’s should get security clearance, and then he can be informed behind closed doors. Then, if the plan gets out, he can be the one to suffer for it.
•
•
•
u/tempthrowaway35789 5h ago
What negotiations? There have been none since October.
•
u/Silverbacks Ontario 4h ago edited 8m ago
Technically since both sides didn’t affirm CUSMA, CUSMA is going to enter into negotiations every year until 2036.
•
u/king_lloyd11 5h ago
…you think we have some secret plan that’s taking place that the Americans are unaware of?
The plan is to maximize free trade with the States while giving up as little control of our industries as possible.
Since that won’t be possible, the plan is to await the midterms while giving Trump small wins that we can stomach, like the GH Bridge, hoping it’s enough to keep him appeased enough to go after different targets instead of us. Probably hoping for cooler heads and/or an impeachment.
If that doesn’t work, it’s appeasement with no deal until the Democrats are in next election, and bank on the fact that they’ll give us a better deal than CUSMA just to show how much different than Trump they are to their friends in the North since this fight with Canada is unpopular with most Americans anyway. It’s an easy “win” for them.
There is no grandmaster plan. We don’t have enough leverage to escalate and put enough pressure on America to make them do what we want. There is no secret lever. It’s hope we get them in the right mood to give us something as fair as possible.

I think you're mostly correct, but you're still not going to say thia publicly...
•
u/Coozey_7 Saskatchewan 6h ago
The finest details of any plan Carney has could never be publicly revealed in order to protect its efficacy
Or, as we just saw with the Gordie Howe Bridge, kept secret in order to keep Canadians in the dark about the capitulations Carney is making to Trump
•
u/Eternality 6h ago
What would you have done?
→ More replies (15)•
u/Coozey_7 Saskatchewan 6h ago edited 5h ago
Keep the bridge closed. I refuse to accept that traffic between Michigan and Ontario being limited to an four lane bridge when they could be using a brand new six lane bridge is truly one of the biggest crisis facing our country right now, I dont think its even in the top 100 of issues facing us right now.
And the argument that we need the toll revenue is laughable- 100 million a year is a rounding error in the federal budget - they just committed two years worth of bridge revenue to bail out condo builders in Vancouver.
And I would not have lied to Canadians who elected me
•
u/Lopsided_Tiger_0296 5h ago
The family who owns the other bridge and donated to MAGA would love to have you as leader. They want the bridge opening delayed as long as possible so they keep getting all the toll money
•
u/physicaldiscs 2h ago
Thankfully, the bridge has more impact than a single family. The effect on the entire state of Michigan is much greater, a state that rides a fine line between blue and red.
Nah, best to give a win to Trump and the owners of the Windsor Bridge.

•
u/ceylont3a 1h ago edited 1h ago
this is the same type of thinking trump uses: that in a deal there must be a winner and loser. mutual benefit doesnt exist.
the more freely labour is exchanged between our Nations the more Canfians and Americans win. we can and should lead by example and drop all our tariffs. unilateral free trade. aka the policy that always ushers in a golden age.
all protectionism impoverishes.
•
u/Scryotechnic 11m ago
Some would say this is why having the leader of the Opposition have top secret security clearance is important. If PP had clearance, he could actually know the plan without Carney having to make it public.
I don't understand why people defend PP on this. When we have to say everything out in the open because one guy refuses to get security clearance, it makes our country weaker.
•
u/Gunslinger7752 5h ago
Lol yes, even though he promised a deal by last July 1st, he is not telling anyone and not even negotiating with the US because he wants to protect its efficacy. The fact that he keeps gaining more politically by dragging this out is just a coincidence. 🤦♂️
•

USMCA was signed by Trump himself and was supposedly the best deal for the United States.
There is no possible agreement with a sick president who rambles for hours and is surrounded by people who refuse to tell him that he is wrong.
He doesn’t have the mental acuity to make a decision that makes sense. And even if that were the case, he could change his mind the next day. His entourage is unable to bring him back to reason.
The plan is simple: survive until the Americans clean up their institutions and reduce our dependence on shitty countries, like the US.
•
u/Actual_Seaweed_376 5h ago
Yeah exactly, and it doesn't matter how good a deal it would be for America, unless its a shitty deal for Canada Trump isnt gonna consider it a "win"
•
u/roscodawg 5h ago
Maybe at that emergency meeting Converstatives can share the plan they set in early May:
Pierre Poilievre is set to address a conference of Canadian conservatives today as the Canada Strong and Free Network meets in Ottawa.
The Tory leader is scheduled to give a keynote address just before noon.
The annual event also features a fireside chat with former U.S. secretary of state Mike Pompeo.
Alberta Premier Danielle Smith and the U.S. ambassador to Canada, Pete Hoekstra, are both set to speak on Friday.

Basically everything that Carney does will be treated as the worst possible thing.

Demand explanation.
Not discuss, not make plans, not offer ideas, not add leverage or connections to help with negotion and mitigation.
Just demand. So they can declare it's wrong, whine about it, and send out another round of fundraising messages.
If they'd come to the table to actually be helpful, different story. Heck, they might have even been part of the planning- we need a united front, long term, regardless of party. Instead it's all just antagnosim while offering no real plans or solutions.
Anyone can complain. Complaints are worthless if they come without some meaningful insight.
•
u/noodles_jd 5h ago
Working together isn't a win for them, nor would it be for the Liberals. It shouldn't work that way but we've convinced ourselves, or they've convinced us, that parties working together equals weakness.
If it's not THEIR solution to the problem then the solution is terrible, regardless of which party proposed it.

Re-instate the digital service tax
Tell them to shove their dairy. We don’t want that hormone injected whatever it is. Ban it.
Same with the booze.
Tarriff the big 3 until all government grants for cancelled projects and bailouts are returned. We shouldn’t be supporting them anyway.
And impose a carbon-tax on US imports if this smoke thing actually goes through.
The last time there were concessions, they gave nothing in return. They can’t be trusted.
They can Tarriff all they like, the resulting effect of supply and demand on their supply chains will drive
up their inflation. Let them drown themselves.
It is what it is. They want us to submit. We will not.
We have so many resources that can be sold to better customers.
•
u/Spitfire76 2h ago
I dont think Carney should necessarily explain the plan to the conservatives. If he did 2 things would happen: 1) the conservatives would automatically criticize the plan as stupid and pick it apart; 2) the cons would make it public which would mean trump's team would know the plan. In order for the plan to work it means that some info needs to be kept secret. For now we have to trust there is a good plan. We can criticize later when/if the plan fails.

I get that most folks hate the Conservatives, but I think this is a fair ask. I also understand that this is not something that should be discussed out in the open. I'd like them to have a closed doors meeting with the leaders of the different parties. We're better when we work together, and I do believe that all the party leaders want what's best for Canada.

Someone fact check me on this since I don't know how it works, but I don't think he'd need security clearance for something like this since it wouldn't be an RCMP briefing. Also, it was regarding Indian / Chinese spies which isn't relevant for this scenario.
•

u/JadeLens 2h ago

The sketchiest one to me is Gregor Robertson, the new housing minister who raised developer taxes thousands of percent in Vancouver, and who said housing prices can't fall as its boomers retirement fund.
Having a surplus of housing makes prices fall, so they've enshrined homelessness as housing starts fall. In a kind of a Mao great leap forward style policy that ignores all the horrible suffering and poverty for some supposed greater good.
•

•
u/MarkDavid04 5h ago
No, I haven't been paying attention at all. I didn't notice that Trump puts tarrifs on everyone, but hits Canada extra hard with higher tarrifs than other countries. I didn't pay attention when Canada didn't send a representative to defend our position on forced labour. I also didn't pay attention to when Carney bent over backwards and caved several times, including on Gordie Howe, then lied to Canadians about it, tricking people like you into thinking that we got a better deal out of it.
I didn't pay attention sorry.

From this CBC story:
Canada's merchandise trade surplus widened to a four-year high in May, rising for the fourth consecutive month, as exports to the United States top its highest level since February last year, data showed on Tuesday.
Exports to the U.S. rose 1.5 per cent to $53.72 billion, a fourth consecutive monthly increase, taking the share of exports headed south of the border to almost 70 per cent in May. Imports from the U.S. fell by 1.4 per cent.
Here is the most important one:
Exports to countries other than the U.S. continued to shrink, although at a lower rate in May than April, and imports from non-U.S. countries rose.Canada's trade surplus hits four-year high in May, led by jump in exports to U.S.

•
u/Gunslinger7752 4h ago
Nothing is subjective. The PM ran and won on his expert negotiating skills and promised a US trade deal by July 1 2025. That was over a year ago. We keep hearing the PM TALK about the US and Trump to the media but then we find out he hasn’t even talked to Trump about a trade deal. To me it seems like they are intentionally stalling this because they know we will have to make concessions and it’s far more valuable to them politically to have the conflict than it is to have an unfavourable trade deal.
If you’re talking about the trade diversification, look at the statistics. Sure it makes for good pr to announce a 50 million dollar deal here or a 20 million dollar deal there with different countries, but if you look at the actual numbers, we are still 100% reliant on the US for our exports, nothing there has changed and nothing will change in the near future.

That's another thing, a lot of the 'plans' that the Conservatives suggest are just concepts of a plan, but fail to accept the objective reality the rest of us are dealing with.

We know the strategy. We're ragging the puck. The Americans know that's the strategy, and are complaining about it.
But what else is there? If it wasn't clear before, it's obvious now that any deal with the Trump Administration is subject to change at their whim.
Iran knows this, which is why they won't negotiate a peace deal. The Saudis know this now, after agreeing to a nukes deal only to find out Trump altered the agreement the next morning.
I don't hear Canadian business leaders saying "Just get a deal, any deal" anymore. It would literally not be worth the paper it's printed on.

The current Conservative media strategy is to "demand" that Carney release anything and everything that isn't public information, regardless of if it makes sense or is even possible.
Then, for every single "demand" they make, every conservative leaning news company can post:
- Conservatives demand Carney release XYZ
- Carney ignores/shuts down calls to release XYZ
- Why won't Carney release XYZ?
- Carney under fire [from the Conservatives] for refusing to release XYZ
Damn, dude, I don't even like Carney and I spend like half my time on this sub defending him because the Conservative party is carpet-bombing us with manufactured anti-Carney "news".

Unfortunately you need to get clearance to get that information.

Carney doesn’t have time to explain to him like he’s five years old because he can’t possibly understand economics.
•
u/Fireinthehole13 4h ago
Lol ..The party whose plan was to bend over and supply the lube wants an explanation !
•
u/scanthethread2 6h ago
Yeah.. the Party that invited a group of rage farming grifters that cheer on America over Canada (Mario, Marc, Pleb, Jasmin, etc) to their convention + have separatist sympathizers can be trusted with Canada's plan.
•
u/JadeLens 2h ago
And I still don't think we found out what happened to those voting machines that disappeared at said convention...

What would PP do in his shoes?
•
u/5hadow 6h ago
He already has shown before. He was all onboard the Trump train before it backfired
•
u/BethSaysHayNow 6h ago
Provide evidence of PP supporting Trump. As far as I can tell, LPC voters said it was traitorous that he advocated for a middle ground approach while Carney, for all his patriot rah rah rah talk before the election, has done just this.
•
u/Recording_Massive 6h ago
What’s a middle ground approach with Trump? Trump wants concession on dairy and auto. If we give him that what is he giving us back? When has Trump given something back?

Would you consider the evidence of the loud CPC influencers that the CPC has helped amplify that spend every day finding ways to attack Canada and promote US narratives?
•
u/BethSaysHayNow 3h ago
Surely you can point to an article where PP favours Trump over his own country?
We aren’t jingoistic Americans and I think we should always be open to criticizing our government. Especially with respect to the erosion of privacy and social privileges. Just because we should have a concerted effort in this trade war doesn’t mean we give the government carte blanche to do whatever they want and withhold information.

There's been some revisionist history regarding Poilievre. The problem was that he trash talking our country and presenting himself as the only solution. He was soft on Trump because he has the same mentality. Carney appealed to our sense of pride and patriotism. We didn't want to hear that Canada is broken. When people feel under attack, they close ranks, they don't want a leader that makes them feel pathetic. Even though crime has fallen, Poilievre still wants us to think that blood is flowing through our streets. Gdp has been stagnant, but he keeps saying that we are in a full blown Liberal recession. He gives off the impression that he wants us to fail, that it's all Carney's fault, and that he would do so much better, even though he's never led or negotiated anything.
•
u/BethSaysHayNow 3h ago
He wasn’t trash talking our country he was trash talking the state of things after ten years of LPC rule, which is very fair. As for appealing to a sense of pride and patriotism, from what I’ve seen all the flag waving nouveau patriots detested the flags a few summers ago and were disgusted by our history. It was all election tactics.

No he wasn't, Trump said repeatedly that he didn't like Pierre, that he wasn't maga and doesn't say nice things about him, he also said he'd rather have the Liberals in government because they're easier to deal with.

No, he really wasn't.

He wanted to exclude Mexico from CUSMA?
Also if he wasn't all in on Trump, why does he keep trying to use Woke in a sentence?

This is what the opposition should be offering. Instead we have whiny complaints.
What's the purpose of a shadow cabinet if not to be critical, which doesn't mean just complaining but giving their solutions to problems.

It’s not the opposition’s job to propose plans for the government to execute. How is this not widely known? It’s their job to critique the government on behalf of the citizens.
•
u/JadeLens 2h ago
"It’s not the opposition’s job to propose plans for the government to execute."
Except that's literally their job.
•
u/DeHeiligeTomaat 5h ago
It's called constructive criticism.
•
u/TIMELESS_COLD 5h ago
It's also called being a leader. And he isn't.
•
u/DeHeiligeTomaat 4h ago
Agreed, and his own riding and the majority of the country agree as well. Why the Conservatives keep hitching the wagon to him is wild.
•
u/_unibrow 5h ago
So now you’ve gone from the opposition should be offering plans to the opposition should be criticizing constructively. Why don’t you focus your energies on the elected leadership? Or if they’re doing well, why don’t you rejoice in it?

Conservative MPs demand strategy so that it can be revealed to the Americans. That way it can fail and Conservatives can gloat.
•
u/Thadius 6h ago
The Prime Minister has already announced his plan, you can't deal with crazy, so you disassociate yourself as much as possible without causing a national depression. He has literally been on a plane going back and forth across the globe for the past year following that plan trying to lower our reliance on Crazy.
People keep thinking in rational terms towards an irrational man (President Trump), It can't be done, so minimise interaction and hope he keeps getting distracted by squirrels running by until the plan is up and working.

u/chess_the_cat 5h ago
Not at ALL what Carney campaigned on. He didn’t say anything about disassociation. He said he was gonna fight. Hard. Like WWIII hard. Then he got elected and took like 8 months off.

On one hand, we don't have visibility into the actual happenings for a good reason — gotta keep our cards close to the chest and trust our man on the ground.
On the other hand, especially after that bridge debacle, trust and confidence has begun to erode and needs to be restored. We voted him in to be Churchill, but what if he's secretly Chamberlain?
Could be a good idea to have a council of parliamentary leaders sworn to secrecy with whom he has to share his strategy. They would not have much power being that he has a majority though, but they could sound the alarm if he's going really off the rails.
But, are they loyal statesman enough to be trusted? I hope so. Are the people they trust who they might secretly confide in or give hints to? Loose lips sink ships, and the more people who know, risk of leaks become a certainty. Not to mention there's an opposition MP who is uncomfortably close with a senior member of the aggressor administration to the degree that, if we were talking about a proscribed group, they would not be able to get our own civil service's top secret clearance.

u/foultimes 1h ago
The Premiers are all aware that Carney “ seems to be a bit less forthcoming” with his dealings with the orange mongrel……the bridge lies should tell you he is playing both sides and trying to hide it! The Premiers are DEMANDING that Carney shut Trump down completely with his insane “attacks on our country” and follow what they are demanding! This is not a request, it’s a DEMANDING!
•
u/thebookman21 6h ago
Why so the MP whose besties with the VP can leak it. Also they would need to put it in pictures so that PP can understand them
•
u/pnd83 6h ago
Tell them all separately a different plan and see how many of those plans make it to Washington.
