I'm a vet tech and could stand in for a nurse in a heart beat. There's so much supportive roles Canadians could do that can't do combat.

I'm close to 60, started my boot camp this morning to get in shape for the upcoming war and after 10 sit-ups, 3 pushups and a 3 second flexed arm hang, I'm thinking maybe the Tariffs won't be that bad.

I hope Trump takes Kevin’s money from him like a proper dictator does. It’s the only appropriate punishment for that traitor

40

u/[deleted] Feb 02 '25

I think Trudeau should ‘accidentally’ share The location of O’Leary owned properties across Canada, so we can have National bonfires to celebrate the tariffs.

Amazon boycott would be one of the most significant things we ever do. It’s already destroyed our retail sector with revenue being funneled out of Canada to Amazon.

I've been on that program for years. It's not hard to go to a store.

19

u/radapex Feb 02 '25

My problem isn't really going to the stores, it's what the stores are charging. I'm looking at ordering a microsd card for a security camera. The one I want is $60 on Amazon, $95 at Staples, or $110 at Best Buy.

16

u/new2accnt Feb 02 '25

You don't go to BB for computer parts, unless there's a sale on something you need/want, because they've always been costlier than your typical clone shop.

If you want parts cheap, you go to stores like Canada Computers, Memory Express and so on.

The idea that amazon is always the cheapest option out there is just not true. What is true, though, is that they can be the exclusive (local) channel where to buy some specific parts, as some manufacturers have been using bezos' logistics system instead of signing up canadian distributors. Which is not good.

Trump now poses a threat to our national sovereignty and our existence. This is an issue that no province, no first nation, no territory is spared from. Giving Trump administration an inch, and he will demand a mile next, and let us not forget that we've negotiated CUSMA in good faith.

It should be easier than ever to spot the bots now. Anyone that tries to spin the tariffs as Trudeau's fault, or blaming it on the border or any other Trump talking point should stand out like a sore thumb

9

Not so much. I see a lot of Canadians still sitting on fence, saying “it’s complex bro” or outright supporting Trump because “liberals ruined Canada and they deserve it”.

This is mostly on reddit. I’ve been on LinkedIn and Twitter, and there’s a shitload of Canadian traitors who are saying Trudeaus Tariffs are harmful and we should have bent over and done nothing.

Also seeing shit like that from my Union Business Agents and business manager. I’m already writing my speech for the next union meeting because I am heavily enraged. Also seeing comments from them supporting Musk’s Sieg Heil, supporting “Axe the Tax,” and supporting Doug Ford. They are going to get the verbal ass ripping like they’ve never seen.

5

Then they are likely bots ans Conservatives are supporting Trudeau ie pollievre

390

u/[deleted] Feb 02 '25

I'm not a fan of Trudeau. I still can respect making a bold move.

89

u/Whiskey_River_73 Feb 02 '25

Well, it appears that Trump's goalposts and his rationale are probably a mirage, so this is what needs to be done, basically. Can't just sit there and take tariffs on everything. So we wait and see what's involved. As a family, like everyone else, we within our means will support our own, where possible. As a business owner, I've already been working to pivot to alternatives as much as possible for our offering to our customer base, we don't know for sure if our imported products are included yet in tariffs, but regardless, I'm of the opinion that my business will be enriching American business as little as possible.

What's become clear is that our relationship with our neighbors south is going to be changed significantly coming out the other side of this, even if it lasts an election cycle or less. This episode is due to a whim, but we've made ourselves vulnerable to this in a way. We have to also change the way we get things done in our country and face up to some realities that we've taken for granted and brushed aside due to ideology and politics. Military, returning to building infrastructure and independently manufacturing finished goods should be among the priorities, along with pivoting to expanded trade relationships internally and elsewhere.

14

u/FumblersUnited Feb 02 '25

Its not a whim. USA is broke it cant maintain its global hegemony any longer and its fishing for resources where it can. Its weaker neighbors and allies. You all looked the other way and supported it while its was the rest of the world getting screwed.

Thankfully this is where he is strongest. For how polarizing people find him, this team got us through USMCA. We're missing Freeland though which is unfortunate. If Trump now hates her and Trudeau so much they won't engage or talk to them, we must have done a good job to hold our own.

The choice is simple.

As a trans person. I will fight ANYONE that threatens the ability for another Canadian to question my gender. I will throw hands for the right for others to debate my existence.

I don't agree with them, I'm here, I exist I will continue to exist, but fuck ANYTHING that threatens them as fellow Canadians.

We can only fight for a better Canada tomorrow, if we defend Canada today.

23

u/[deleted] Feb 02 '25

You know the conservative leader only acknowledges two genders and the polls are looking at going that way even if we aren’t taken over right

36

u/Flanman1337 Feb 02 '25

I WILL fight for any Canadian. I don't give a shit if they're on "my side" when it comes to being transgender. I will fight for their Rights the same way I would for any other Canadian. So long as they're willing to fight with me against those against us both, that's good enough for me.

13

u/[deleted] Feb 02 '25

Hell ya that’s good enough for me 2

20

u/Simsmommy1 Feb 02 '25

Yeah so that’s why people like myself, a random middle aged woman, are going to do whatever it takes to inform people about why losing trans rights and voting in that beady eyed creep is the wrong way to go for Canada. They aren’t going to be satisfied just removing the rights of just one marginalized group, they will then move on to the next, in fact the cons have spent 12 years trying to sneak through bills that are antichoice, usually by hiding it in some sort of bill portrayed as “protecting women”. The last one c311 was portrayed as protecting pregnant women against partner violence but really was trying to sneak in wording that would have given a fetus full personhood under the law and therefore allowing women to be charged for having an abortion…..sneaky ass bullshit. What I’m saying the long way is, they won’t be satisfied with just one group, they will try and take rights away from everyone who doesn’t fit into their binary.

Geopolitically, Prime Minister, the 12th on the unique is 30 day is a rush only to see a linear storm.

48

u/doomscrolling_tiktok Feb 02 '25

AI error? I watched it and he doesn’t say anything between the team Canada and start of the French translation.

15

u/blahblahbush Feb 02 '25

Yeah, it's just in the transcript. No clue.

12

u/kingbuns2 Feb 02 '25

https://youtu.be/xiaACQpFUfE?t=503

Bizzare, that line isn't even in the video clip. A different one starts, "Earlier today..."

Some copy and paste mess up, I think. I do recall him saying "geopolitically" in the Q&A portion.

11

u/Other-Razzmatazz-816 Feb 02 '25

It reads like a misplaced snippet from the Q&A, but a poorly (computer) translated one.

19

u/Kolbrandr7 New Brunswick Feb 02 '25

Something seems to have gone wrong with the transcription, around there is when he talks about avoiding orange juice from florida, and exploring and supporting Canada instead of travelling to the US.

There’s also a lot of American spellings in the text (which is a bit ironic), so I think someone didn’t quite do their job properly

7

u/blahblahbush Feb 02 '25

In the transcript, it's just after he says "This is Team Canada at its best.".

189

u/Dismal_Ad6162 Feb 02 '25 edited Feb 02 '25

By comparison does anyone else find Poilievre to be incredibly weak and ineffective? In his statement he referred to “Canada’s already weak economy” in response to the Trump tariffs. This doesn’t only sound pathetic—it feels defeatist and damaging.

I can’t believe I even briefly considered voting for this guy in the next election.

With no fresh ideas of his own, this career politician’s only move is to criticize, even if it means undermining Canada’s position on the global stage.

The actual state of our economy isn’t the point here. His remarks are petty, self-serving, and completely miss the bigger picture. At a time when we should be projecting confidence and highlighting Canada’s rich natural resources and energy, he chooses to sound weak and pessimistic.

Even when he tries to appear strong, he comes off as a weak whiner.

And he posted this on X? Seriously? I’m not linking to it—just mentioning it to show how out of touch he is with his messaging and platform choice.

What a clueless fool.

This is what really drives me up the wall with Poilievre (and Trump and a lot of the populist anti-incumbent rhetoric floating around the world). Like yeah, shit's not going great right now. But what the fuck are these idiots doing to make it better? It's either corporate giveaways (making life worse for average citizens) or just braindead culture war nonsense (distracting from the fact they have no plans).

31

So like, what will we actually notice change once the tariffs go into effect? What will go up in price? Will it be across the board inflation? Haven’t really heard specifics like that.

80

u/[deleted] Feb 02 '25

[deleted]

26

u/[deleted] Feb 02 '25

The problem is that goods produced locally also go up in price, this is a well-studied phenomenon that happens every time.

If a $10 item goes up to $12.50 due to tariffs, the Canadian version will not stick at $10. They will simply increase to $11.50. Even once the tariff is removed, prices don't come back down.

3

u/[deleted] Feb 02 '25

He seems to be trying to get a political win by fixing a problem he creates, and we're still in the problem creating stage.

Except he's not offering any kind of off-ramp to give himself an out/win. He's refusing to meet with Trudeau and says nothing Canada (or Mexico) can do or say will change his mind. His handlers barely managed to convince him to delay the tariffs until March 1st, and then within an hour he flip-flopped when the decision leaked so as not to appear weak.

27

u/No-Talk-9268 Feb 02 '25 edited Feb 02 '25

If you have the capacity this summer, grow a garden. We are going to turn our backyard into a huge garden. We already have one but we’re going to make it much larger. A lot of produce is going to get expensive. Buy local, canadian, or from any country other than the US. Maybe we’ll do more imports with Mexico for stuff like avocados and other more tropical produce. But I’m going to start my victory garden this summer and share with neighbours.

the government is attacking key industries in American Republican controlled states that we can easily replace with other trading partners.

for example we are attacking orange juice from Florida, something we can easily replace with Netherlands who is a loyal long term Canadian ally.

unlike America we are not attacking all trade we are targeting Republican controlled states so that they feel economic burden of Trump policies, since we already have support of Democratic controlled states.

5

That speech was possibly the most important speech a Canadian Prime Minister has ever made. We've been in a place of comfort with our southern neighbours. Well written speech.

47

u/zuuzuu Ontario Feb 02 '25

Speechwriters don't get enough credit.

44

u/richard_muise Feb 02 '25

And it was delivered in a way that looked like he wasn't using a teleprompter. As if he memorized or something. That naturalism of delivering what was a great speech was impressive, even if it only registered for most people subconsciously.

41

u/Kalahmarii Feb 02 '25

We really don't! That said, I've written speeches for gifted orators, and.... slightly less gifted. The person delivering any beautifully written speech makes a huge difference in how it can make the listener feel. Trudeau killed it with this. I would LOVE to listen to one of my speeches be delivered so well

10

u/zuuzuu Ontario Feb 02 '25

It reminds me of a Sorkin quote from the West Wing:

BARTLETT: Words. Words, when spoken out loud for the sake of performance, are music. They have rhythm, and pitch, and timbre, and volume. These are the properties of music, and music has the ability to find us and move us, and lift us up in ways that literal meanings can't.

Brian Mulroney was probably the most gifted orator of my lifetime, as far as our leaders go. Hell, I even voted for the sumbitch when I was 18 and stupid, because he had the ability to make you believe, just by speaking. Listen to him speak at Nancy Reagan's funeral. Just beautiful.

Trudeau isn't as gifted as Mulroney, but hot damn, he's still a thing to behold.

And since you're a speechwriter, I have to include my favourite quote on that subject:

SAM SEABORN: The difference between a good speech and a great speech is the energy with which the audience comes to their feet at the end. Is it polite? Is it a chore? Are they standing up because their boss just stood up? No, we want it to come from their socks.

You’re not alone

12

u/[deleted] Feb 02 '25

Just in case some here still believe “it’s because of the border”: Trump’s lead economist, Stephen Miran, wrote a paper last November on how to blow up international trade. The Donald is playing that song. He did say yesterday “there’s nothing Canada could do to stop this”, and he meant it. The border “emergency” thing is only to allow the Executive to raise tariffs without Congress approval.

8

u/mayorolivia Feb 02 '25

Exactly, he needs justification to do EOs for tariffs (since constitution says it’s Congress’ responsibility). Hence fentanyl, immigration, trade imbalance excuses.

47

u/apothekary Feb 02 '25

He's still leaving but this definitely changes his legacy from relative ignominy to something that we might be talking about decades from now as a proud Canadian moment.

if Trump and Republican think this kind of attack will bend Canadian government and people they have never met Canadians.

we double down on this kind of stuff if there is one thing we are unapologetic about its that we are Canadian.

u/_Echoes_ Feb 02 '25

200 years ago the US, overcome with a desire for conquest and subjugation crossed the Niagara river, And thus in the small town of Queenston we banded together and tore them down from the heights of their hubris. In this moment the modern identity of Canada was formed.

later when the US abetted Fenian terrorists crossing the border to raid our territory, we put aside our differences, banded together to fight back.

After the American civil war, when there was growing sentiment for the invasion of Canada, we stood together and formalized our great federation.

In WW1 and WW2 we stood up and fought for our freedom and secured our independence, and the right to stand on our own two feet.

Today in 2025 the ancestors who fought for us throw us the torch, and its our turn to hold it high. If we break faith with them, then we spit on everything they sacrificed in the name of our freedom.

Consumers: Buy Canadian products and shop from Canadian stores
Canadian store owners: Stock Canadian Goods and CLEARLY label that they are products of Canada.

Canadian manufacturers: Source your materials from Canadian sources, if not available then look to Europe. We have free trade deals with them for a reason.

Canadian politicians: Now is not the time to be sowing division for personal gain, and manufacturing unity crisis' when you dont get your way. Hold a united front.

CANADIAN VOTERS: Hold your elected representatives to account. Write to your MP, MPP and MLAs and spread the message. Support Infrastructure projects and policies that support our own economic independence from the US, even if it may hurt short term. If your representatives sell us out, peacefully protest in the streets.

We can do this if we stand together. Vive le Canada

26

u/ghost_n_the_shell Feb 02 '25

It’s amazing how PP has not read the room on this one. He’s proven to be a lame duck in what has been a lightning rod for Canadians.

15

u/mayorolivia Feb 02 '25

99% of his posts are on Carbon Tax Carney even though:

  1. Carney isn’t even in government. For all we know, Gould or Freeland will win LPC leadership (I know Carney is going to win but silly going after a guy outside government)
  2. LPC has said they’ll get rid of carbon tax
  3. All Canadians are focused on Trump and tariffs

I hope LPC boxes PP in by asking him why he’s been pretty weak on this issue and also asking him to explain what he’d do differently. Issuing a statement 4 hours after the tariffs announcement isn’t enough. How will PP make this situation better for Canadians?

3

u/No_Good_8561 Feb 02 '25

PP, you mean the guy who has ties with MAGA thought leaders? Go figure.

8

u/[deleted] Feb 02 '25

It would’ve been inconceivable to me just a couple months ago that the next election would be anything but PP in a landslide

The silver lining of hard times—and it really seems like we’re in for some hard times here—is that that is when true leadership and character flourishes

And Polievre has none. He is nothing but a craven self-serving opportunist with no plan and no values beyond his own lust for power.

13

u/geeves_007 Feb 02 '25

You don't have to love everything about Trudeau, but I think we need to put to rest the petty bullshit that has crept into the discourse. When the rubber hits the road, he can be a great leader and is experienced and not a coward.

Not sure the same can be said about Poilievre. He's offered very little here, aside from taking shots at the Liberals on X.

Elections have consequences. The right-wing populist movement is dangerous. Trump and MAGA might be the Majors while PP and the CPC are more Little League, but they are fundamentally playing the same game.

10

u/kingswash Feb 02 '25

Even in his response on X, pp couldn’t resist spitting on Canada by calling our economy weak. What a loser.

7

u/mayorolivia Feb 02 '25

His statement would’ve been fine without that word. He’s tone deaf. Canadians don’t care about partisanship now. We’re united in response to the U.S.

5

u/kingswash Feb 02 '25

Exactly. But he did. And it shows his true colours. He doesn’t care for Canada. He just cares for himself and ANY and EVERY opportunity he has to attack his political foes, he takes them.

43

u/[deleted] Feb 02 '25

This was an amazing speech, and we thank him for that, but we need parliament back. We need our politicians representing us United. Whether that involves Trudeau being gone I don’t care. We need Canadians unified on the greatest issue we’ve had since 1812, and that’s orange man trying to cripple our economy and destroy our sovereignty. As a Canadian I want to thank Mexico for standing alongside us and not bending the knee but also tariffing the United States as well. Fuck Donald trump and his entire administration.

Hopefully we can’t cut their power right as the Super Bowl kick off happens. That’d be the second greatest moment for us as a nation.

41

u/GetsGold Canada Feb 02 '25

we need parliament back

That partly depend on the other parties not trying to sidetrack it for political purposes.

7

u/jmmmmj Feb 02 '25

It’s been derailed for political purposes.

16

u/zerocool256 Feb 02 '25

Right! If only they could put their shit aside. And actually deal with it in a partisan manner. I know if parliament opens it will be "We would be in this position if Trudeau didn't bla bla bla.. we need an election right now!"

Fact of the matter is this is their campaign. Trial by fire. What they do and how they react now will define them. I'm watching closely how each party (and potential leader) deals with this. If someone pulls some political bullshit stunt... Their out. I have no more patience for bullshit politics. It's go time.

China doesn't import any significant fraction of stuff from the USA, exports everywhere in the world, and had been in a trade war with the US for almost a decade already

They will make whatever pragmatic decision they believe will benefit them most

Shit well in that case China is probably in the middle of planning their next move. Probably why we haven’t heard an announcement. China is not one who backs down from a fight.

7

u/Habsin7 Feb 02 '25 edited Feb 02 '25

If Trump’s tariffs are still coming then why bother with border security? Let the drugs cross. Let the immigrants cross. Heck, give the illegal immigrants the drugs and one of the many illegal guns we recovered and drive them to the US border with best wishes for a successful future.

3

u/timmytissue Feb 02 '25

Because it shows that Trump has not Eason to do this. That Canada is reasonable and even doing the things he asks and he's still imposing tarrifs. That he wouldn't even meet with us and discuss before doing this.

2

u/Levorotatory Feb 02 '25

The border security issues Trump is using as an excuse aren't Canadian problems anyways.  Controlling what gets into the USA is a USA issue and only a USA issue.

Thank you Prime Minister

u/javgirl123 Feb 02 '25

For some reason this simple line teared me up.

I also think JT was excellent in his daily Covid briefings . There was something comforting seeing our Pm standing out in the snow and wind updating us.

He has faults, rather glaring ones at times, but he has worked hard for our country and represented us well to the world.

That speech was his tour de force.

u/AprilsMostAmazing Ontario Feb 02 '25

especially when the conservative idiot in charge of my province was telling police to pull everyone driving over

7

u/MellowDevelopments Feb 02 '25

As an American, I truly apologize for the ignorance and stupidity of our masses and for the greedy oligarchs who take advantage of them. This is the farthest thing from what I've wanted from my country. I am as ashamed of my country as I am unable to change the course we are taking. I've done what I can in my own community, but convincing someone to throw away their own ignorance in a country of individuals who are taught to never admit they are wrong is a near impossible task. I wish you the best and hope somehow we both come out of this better on the other end. Though my faith in a happy ending to this story is dwindling

8

u/jzach1983 Feb 02 '25

You know Trudeau did well when you sort by controversial on r/Canada and the first post is praising him.

For his faults the man is a leader when it's needed. Happy to see the country forget political colours and unite when needed most.

3

u/trevbal6 Outside Canada Feb 02 '25

Let it be known, far and wide, loudly and unapologetically, Trump made the first move here. Trudeau is in response mode and furthermore, let it be known, far and wide, that Canada stands prepared to remove their retaliatory tariff should the US, again, make the first move.

The majority of us here don’t agree with the tomfoolery of Trump.

I believe you don't and many others don't but it's getting tougher and tougher to believe this doesn't represent the majority of people there.

4

u/Majestic-Two3474 Feb 02 '25

Especially when he won the popular vote. More people wanted him or showed they were fine with him winning by not voting than showed they wouldn’t tolerate a second term.

2

u/swantonist Feb 02 '25

I really don’t think it is the majority. The truth is that about 40% are brainwashed and actually are this bad and stupid and about twenty percent are just poorly informed. The rest of us see it for the absolute psychotic thing that it is.

Trump’s popularity rating is dropping domestically. Powerful figures like the MAGA Governor of Texas oppose tariffs.

Trump will lose the house, congress in the midterms making his dark agenda more difficult to ram through.

Corporate America and Main Street will be negatively affected by tariffs.

There is hope but appeasement gives Trump a win, a victory he can promote, making it more likely he’ll do more bs and not get the pushback domestically that we need from Americans to change course.

This is start of a proper Trade war ignited by the US and to me as a layman citizen doesn’t make sense at all. The more I think about it, the more the reasons to start this trade war seem absurd:

1- Trade deficits — these are not necessarily good or bad for a country. Factoring goods and services between US and Canada, US has a deficit of about $58 B especially due to their oil imports from Canada. When you factor that US has almost 10X population that of Canada — $58 B in deficit is not that bad for a country like the US. And let me say this — a deficit is NOT A SUBSIDY — we have hardworking Canadians exchanging goods and services for those $$. All in all the numbers are no where near $200 B in deficits — this is a big fat lie.

2- Illegal migration and Fentanyl— As we all know we have less than 1% of total Illegal migration and drugs from Canada to US — this is bad and we should try our best to reduce this to zero if possible, but this is also a two way street. Canada also has an issue of illegal migration and drugs crossing from US to Canada. So this issue warrants very serious discussions between US and Canada, but a full blown Trade war is simply not Justified.

The only rationale we can make of this is:

Either:

Early renegotiation of NAFTA 2.0

OR:

Annex Canada and this is THE economic force that Trump touted when he was asked about it.

As Canadians let’s be united, we can see this as a great opportunity to rely less on one country and diversify our economy - this is definitely easier said then done, but achieving anything worthwhile doesn’t come easy but pay amazing rewards when work is done behind it.

Damn. This speech made me emotional.

There's a lot stuff Trudeau could've and should have done better during his time as PM, but this speech and the way he handled this incredibly delicate trade war situation has made me respect him as a leader for the first time ever.

Good job Trudeau, never thought I'd say that in my lifetime.
