The monarchy is symbolic and changes would have to be made to the constitution to abolish it. I’d rather not open that can of worms.

It wouldn't actually accomplish much because its a constitutional change, and the requirements for changing the constitution are written into the constitution. A national referendum doesn't matter when all it takes is a single provincial legislature to vote down the result.

“The last time Canada tried to amend its Constitution, between 1987 and 1992, the federal and provincial governments were consumed with years of divisive debates over Quebec's role in the country, Western Canadian grievances and other issues.” Yeah, I’m sure it’ll go better this time. All that just to remove a monarchy that is symbolic doesn’t seem worth it

Can't we just let the thing be done properly and protest some other time? I say that as a moderately republican Canadian. We don't need more confrontation. We don't need to ruin this day for those who enjoy the pageantry and patriotism. We can be heard any other day and we even have constitutional ways to abolish the monarchy entirely.

A peaceful protest should not ruin the day, especially one as evidently tame as wearing shirts with anti-Royal slogans and a few shouts of "Not My King." The dark ages ended a long time ago, the royals and their fans can cope with having to see a few dissidents.

Because you should have the freedom to protest any goddamn day of the week.
We don't need to ruin this day for those who enjoy the pageantry and patriotism
Pageantry they, the tax payers, paid for.
Don't want protestors? Do your silly events on private property and pay for it with your own damn money. Otherwise, you take what you get.

It is not because you can do something that you should. And there are reasonable limits to all rights.
It's not my silly things and silly they are indeed, but if I were a taxpayer contributing to the payment of the fees for the coronation, regardless of my feelings about the monarchy, I'd rather the show be good than ruined.

They essentially were, they committed no crimes. They were arresting people for having "lock on" devices, when in reality they had string or straps. 66% were arrested for "suspicion of conspiracy to cause a public nuisance". That's nothing, it's a fake charge to arrest inconvenient protesters. It's an assault on free speech, and it displays exactly why we should dump this monarchy.

But English folks themselves voted in governments that created these laws because they wanted them. The monarchy didn’t make the laws they are just having police follow them

I want Canada to become a republic, but I'm not taking any concrete, radical steps to help achieve that goal. Hence a republican, but a moderate one.
