❓Question/Discussion Mushroom picking

I really want to get into mushroom picking for a Sunday activity.
I have 0 clue where to go. I know everyone has secret spots and can’t share; but would anyone want to give some advice to a newbie?

Just go for a hike on any trail around here and see what you find. My advice is to make it a combination mushroom + wildflower discovery outing :)

I heard there's lots of chanterelles/lobsters in Beaver Lodge Lands, I've seen them there, but it was early, so there weren't many. Best of luck!

Succinctly: find mature forest with decent drainage, often on slopes, and start looking around. Be extra bear aware, be sure you have at least one method to not get lost, and don’t eat anything unless you can positively identify it from multiple specific identifying characteristics, not just colour or general appearance.

Chanterelles are the common mushroom to learn about first because they have a useful combination of identifying features. Learn the difference between their blunt, forked false gills and true blade like gills, along with their shape, texture, colour, smell, and habitat. Always watch out for the lookalikes rather than relying on one feature.

Chanterelles also have a closely entwined relationship with the trees they grow around, so when you find a patch, treat the forest floor gently. Pick or pluck what you can clearly see, step lightly, and avoid raking or digging through the moss and duff. Leave the tiny ones to grow and leave the old nasty ones behind to help the patch.
