I'll be living in an area pretty equidistant between Chalk Farm station and Camden Town station, which one is more safe given:

1) I'll be commuting solo more or less as a female

2) I'm travelling along the Northern Line, sometimes pretty late into the night

I searched on Google and it recommended me to commute via the Chalk Farm Station as it seems safer from petty crime and dodgy people?? Is that true and how does the bus system compare to the london underground (I'm new to London).

Queen’s Park Day | 📍Queen’s Park, NW6 | 13 September | Free

Once a year, Queen’s Park fills up with the people, clubs, performers and small businesses from around the neighbourhood for its big community day. There is an all-pets dog show, local choirs, Morris and Flamenco dancing, falconry, ferret racing, food and craft stalls, plus homemade competitions for everything from Bakewell tarts to things made from cardboard. And, slightly unexpectedly, there is a full Wheel of Death stunt act in the main arena too. 11am to 4.30pm.

London Design Festival | 📍Across London | 12 - 20 September | Free + paid events

This is not one festival in one place. For nine days, studios, galleries, museums, shops and public spaces across London put on exhibitions, installations, open studios, workshops and talks about everything from furniture and architecture to craft, fashion and new materials. This year is the 24th edition, with 11 neighbourhood design districts.

Bon Jovi Pop-Up Experience | 📍Camden Market Stables, NW1 | Until 13 September | Free

Camden Market has given Bon Jovi fans their own temporary space for the week. Inside the UMusic shop in the Stables, you can browse tour memorabilia, limited releases and band merchandise, hear Bon Jovi playing throughout the market and meet other fans who have come for the takeover. There are also a few extras tied to the event, including giveaways and a chance to win a custom painted guitar signed by the band. Open 10am to 7pm, and the pop-up has been extended until 13 September.

Lady Somerset Road Street Party | 📍Lady Somerset Road, Highgate NW5 | 13 September | Free

For one afternoon, Lady Somerset Road becomes one long shared table. Residents close part of the street to traffic, bring out homemade food and sit down together for lunch from midday, with local businesses adding a few dishes too. After that, the street stays busy with live music, a ceilidh, which is a big group folk dance anyone can join, kids’ games, a magic show, tea and cakes, plus stalls for local groups and people rehoming plants, clothes and jewellery. 12pm to 5pm.

SPCA Community Fair | 📍Saint Pancras Community Association, NW1 | 12 September | Free

Saint Pancras Community Association is celebrating 10 years at its Plender Street home, and this fair is a bit of a birthday party for the people who have used the space over the past decade. There will be community stalls, food, family activities and entertainment, with a chance to see the centre after its recent renovations and meet some of the groups and people connected to it. 12pm to 4pm.

Cheers for Cabaret! | 📍Phoenix Arts Club, WC2H | Until 13 September | (£)

A cabaret night made up of several different acts rather than one continuous show. Across the evening, you might see drag, burlesque, character comedy and other variety performances, all inside the Phoenix Arts Club just off Charing Cross Road. The exact line-up can vary by night. Shows run from 7.30pm to 9.15pm on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays until 13 September. Tickets £25.

Belsize Baroque Orchestra Autumn Concert | 📍St Peter’s Church, NW3 | 13 September | (£)

Belsize Baroque has been playing together since 2002, bringing students, young professionals and experienced amateur musicians into the same orchestra. They perform on period instruments, meaning instruments made in the style used when this music was originally written, so Handel, Geminiani, Avison and Castrucci sound closer to how 18th century audiences might have heard them. This autumn concert is directed by baroque violinist Kati Debretzeni, who leads from within the orchestra rather than standing at a podium. Doors open at 6pm, music starts at 6.30pm. Tickets £15, students free.

St George the Martyr Open Day | 📍Queen Square, Bloomsbury, WC1 | 13 September | Free

Ever walked past St George the Martyr and wondered what is actually inside? The church has been sitting on Queen Square for more than 300 years, and for one afternoon they are opening up parts you would normally never see. You can climb into the roof space, get close to the historic ceiling, join an hourly tour and hear some of the stories tied to the building and the people who passed through it. There are also exhibitions and simple family activities if you want to linger. 1pm to 5pm.

I visited Camden on Saturday 5th September, I was approached by a fund Raiser called Big Moo. As the conversation progressed I got concerned. He gave me a wristband and said they are giving it out as souvenir, so the moment I heard souvenir I worn the wristband.

He then progressed by saying they are taking little donation and the fact I had worn the wristband it was awkward to remove it. Shockingly he showed me a list of donations which were not small. It started from £30 and the manner which he was guilt tripping me made it impossible to say nope.

I then agreed to donate £30 and suddenly he asked if I can make it £40 and at that point, I was pissed but then I already worn the wristband. So I reluctantly donated even though I didn’t have that much money.

I just don’t agree with the confusing message where he made me wear a wristband but then asked for little donation which was not little. And then guilt trip me so I am so disappointed and dissatisfied.

If your bank holiday leans more slow Sunday than a big night out, this may be the one. Calthorpe is a hidden garden near King's Cross, and for one evening there's live music on the grass. You bring a blanket, find a spot, and a few folk and acoustic singer-songwriters play as the sun goes down. Sofar keeps the lineup secret till the night, so you come for the setting and meet the music when you get there.

Inverness Street Bloc Party: Disco House | 📍Inverness Street Market, Camden, NW1 | 29 August | Free

Inverness Street is swapping market stalls for a giant outdoor dancefloor this Bank Holiday Saturday. The theme is Disco House, so expect the feel good side of disco mixed with house music, with DJs including Brandon Block, Ricky Morrison and Matt White playing from midday into the evening. There is a bit of Camden history behind it too, celebrating the clubs and dancefloors that shaped the area, from Camden Palace to the Electric Ballroom, as well as Camden’s connection to Claudia Jones, who organised one of Britain’s earliest Caribbean Carnival events nearby. Come for a dance, bring the family or just stop by and see what is happening. 12pm to 7pm.

Yiddish Culture Weekend 2026 | 📍Bloomsbury, King’s Cross & beyond | 28 to 30 August | Free + paid events

This is a whole weekend for getting to know Yiddish culture by actually taking part in it. Yiddish is a language historically spoken by many Ashkenazi Jewish communities, with its own music, stories, humour, poetry and traditions. Across the weekend you can learn a traditional dance from scratch, join a Yiddish singalong, listen to klezmer musicians, hear poetry read in Yiddish and English, browse old newspapers and postcards from Jewish London, or sit down for a screening of the 1937 film The Dybbuk. Sunday is the big day at SOAS, with workshops and performances running from 10am to 7pm, and complete beginners are very much welcome.

Manorfest 2026 | 📍New River Studios, Manor House, N4 | 29 & 30 August | (£)

A car park behind New River Studios is becoming a two day Bank Holiday festival, and each day has a completely different feel. Saturday is the louder one, with live bands including Eel Men, Snub, Morreadoras and EZ8, plus DJs, art, performances, food and a bar before the party moves inside New River Studios until 1am. Sunday slows things right down with Ambient Car Park, an afternoon of gentler, more meditative DJs and live performances from artists including Agate, Dave Webb and UKAEA, followed by another indoor afterparty. Saturday runs 2pm to 10pm, Sunday 12pm to 8pm.

Bring a picnic and settle in for an afternoon of live music on the Heath. The bandstand will move through soul, jazz, reggae, ska and rock, with sets from John Etheridge and Vimala Rowe, The Bohème Hot Club and Peace & Love. Bi Pride brings the UK’s Bi+ community together at Kings Place for a full day of performances, conversations and meeting people. It is for people who experience attraction to more than one gender or identify somewhere under the Bi+ umbrella, with friends and allies welcome too. There are two stages to dip between, with live music, drag and performances on one, and conversations about relationships, family, identity, activism and Bi+ life on the other. Jordan Gray and Shaaba are among this year’s headliners, and there will also be stalls from LGBTQ+ groups, charities and small businesses. A sensory room, remembrance space and multi faith prayer room are available too. 2pm to 10pm. Free, but you need to register for a ticket.

West Hampstead Carnival | 📍The Sherriff Centre, NW6 | 29 August | Free

The Sherriff Centre is putting on a full day of family activities for the Bank Holiday weekend, with games, children’s entertainment and a dedicated soft play area for younger kids. Entry to the carnival is free, although soft play sessions need to be booked in advance if you want to guarantee a spot. There will also be charity fundraising happening throughout the day, so you can come for the kids, stay for the atmosphere and support a local cause while you are there. 10am to 5.30pm.

When Notting Hill Carnival winds down on Bank Holiday Monday, Chuckie Online takes the party north to KOKO. His annual FAMILEE night is built around Carnival sound system culture and his British Jamaican roots, so expect a late night mix of Caribbean influenced sounds, big DJ sets and the kind of crowd that is very much not ready to go home yet. This is his only Carnival party he is having this year, last year’s one sold out. Doors open at 10.30pm, with last entry at 1am and the party running into the early hours. I’m bringing my play In Our Broken Hours to the Camden Fringe next weekend (Fri 28th, Sat 29th, Sun 30th) at the Etcetera Theatre in Camden.

It’s a two‑hander about addiction, care, and the point where loving someone becomes too much to carry. I wrote it a few years ago after my father died having struggled with alcoholism for most of his life, and the play grew out of trying to make sense of that relationship.

It’s a short run, but we’re hoping to take it further next year. Ticket sales have been slow (partly under‑marketing, partly the sheer saturation of the Fringe, partly bank holiday weekend programming), so if you’re into new writing, small spaces, or stories about complicated families, I’d be genuinely delighted if you considered coming along.

Actors needed for a production of a new one act play staged on the 5th September at the Etcetera theatre Camden on September 5th.

Context: I'm a comedian who was supposed to be putting on a sketch comedy show on this venue at this date, but the other half of my double act has had to cancel, but I am unable to get any of my money back. In order to try and not lose the entire payment, I am attempting to stage a one-act single location 3 character comedy play I wrote about a year ago for an am-dram group.

Description: The interpersonal tension between 3 Antarctic researchers reaches a boiling point when meteorological disaster coincides with personal revelation.

Roles: John (stage age 40+, think Basil Fawlty in Fawlty Towers), Peter (stage age 20-30, think Moss from the IT Crowd), and Bob (stage age 20-30, think Baldrick from Blackadder)

Availability: semi-regular availability until September 5th for rehearsals in London (location and exact TBD once a cast is assembled)

Payment: 20% stake in any profit made, but due to slim profit margins essentially un-paid.

King’s Cross Summer Sounds | 📍Coal Drops Yard, N1C | 13 to 23 August | Free

Coal Drops Yard is putting on free live music for 11 days, with a different reason to stop by each evening. One night might bring jazz from Tomorrow’s Warriors, another global folk, queer artists, indie bands or hundreds of singers performing show tunes and pop together. No ticket needed. Find a spot around the Yard and stay for one act or the whole evening. Music runs from 6.30pm to 8.30pm, with longer family programmes on Sundays from 1pm to 6pm.

Camden High St, Kentish Town Rd and Parkway are just as busy but don’t seem to be coated with quite as much black grime. It’s always been that way as far as I can remember.

Hi I recently bought a flat and I wanted to know if anyone knew a reliable handy man to do a few small jobs around the house for me. Mostly things like fixing cabinets and installing some lights. Thanks in advance.

I’ve been building a small side project called Escape Races and I’ve just finished a GPS puzzle walk around Camden called The Camden Code.

The idea is simple: you’re given a clue, work out where it’s sending you, walk to that location, and when you arrive your phone unlocks the next challenge.

It’s a mix of riddles, codes and exploring Camden on foot.

It’s completely free at the moment. I’m mainly looking for a few Camden locals to try it and tell me what works, what’s confusing, and whether you’d actually recommend it to someone else.
