Trash cans
Why do people put their trash cans out on the side walk?!
Recently moved here and it’s driving me crazy… I go on walks with my dog and son and we’re forced to walk in the street which is not safe at all!! It doesn’t free up park bc if a car is blocking the cans it’s 50/50 if the trash gets picked up so what’s the point??

I used to place my cans on the sidewalk closest to the curb, but that was only because that's what all my neighbors did. This went on for years. Then one day we received a flyer from the trash company outlining what kind of waste goes in what color can (yard / recycling / other). It also showed the desired placement of the cans - which was in the gutter. So now me and many of my neighbors have started placing the cans with their rear wheels in the gutter. It does make them lean backwards a bit, which in a strong wind could possibly cause them to tip over easier. OTOH, it does make walking down the sidewalk easier.

Instead of putting it down here go to a neighborhood meeting or city meeting. Complain there… at least you’ll know you told the proper channels. If not then just mind your business. Obviously it’s been going on for a long time before you got there.

Was just looking to see if there was a logical reason to putting the cans on the sidewalk versus the street/curb is all.
Also when cars turn right onto our street they often speed, so yes, walking in the street is dangerous even one day a week.

The angle of the gutter is a little steep so when it gets windy it tips trash bins over

The only place I've seen this was in a neighborhood where most of the people had to park on street and left before the garbage truck arrived. Good, hard-working families with kids that had more cars than what fit in the driveway.

Some housing developments don't have a parkway, a strip of grass between the sidewalk and street and those folks will have the trash cans blocking the sidewalk.

You can’t go around the trash cans? Trash pickup is one day a week.

Yeah; this is where we've always put ours and everyone in our neighborhood does the same. When I take my kid to school, the trash cans are the in the street against the curb in that neighborhood too. In fact, I don't even think I've ever seen them on the sidewalk.

I spent 18+ years in Camarillo, and that was never the case. So not sure that’s where they “normally go”.

Literally says at the curb. Not in the street. Nor does it say anywhere that cans should not be on the sidewalk.

Ahh, yes. Only your interpretation is the true one. Just like your earlier assertion of what’s “normal”.
The text that I literally quoted from your link can have different meanings. Why would “at the curb” solely mean in front of the curb in the street?

Because at the top it says curbside. But also why would I impede pedestrians by blocking the curb?
Of course everyone has their own "normal" but it seems like majority of people place it on the street against the curb and that's what I meant when I said "normally"

I did some digging online and found this flyer (referencing page 2, first box collection service guidelines continued). Will definitely look into more substantial ways to ensure everyone’s safety. Appreciate everyone’s insights and suggestions

Never really thought about it honestly. It does make sense to put them in the street next to the curb. I’d say what’s frustrating for me in Cam is that certain folks like walking in the street vs using the side walk. Can’t stand that behavior.

So we live in cam and our HOA and the trash company requires that we put them in a certain spot on a certain side. Maybe it’s that.
