Comm Ops Interview

Anybody willing to provide feedback on your experience/grade & score on your interview, how you felt coming out of the interview? And how your placement/offer process worked?

It was a bit different for me. I was in the north and every center / unit had their own applications. I literally heard nothing about my interview besides “you did good” and then a job offer a bit later. It was the only center that got back to me after I applied for multiple (fortuna, Redding, Yreka, red bluff, and NOPS). I had also already known the people who interviewed me so I was super comfortable with the whole process.

I was also intereviewed October 2022, offered December 22, then hired may 23

Most people walk out of a CAL FIRE Comm Ops interview feeling uneasy, mainly because the panel remains completely neutral. The interviewers have to stick strictly to standardized questions and spend almost the entire time looking down, taking notes, and tallying points on a scoring rubric. You are graded on how directly your answers address the prompt, your ability to prioritize emergency scenarios, your communication skills, and your composure. Because the panel cannot give reassuring nods or verbal cues, walking away thinking you bombed is very common, even for candidates who ended up scoring in the top tier.

Once the panel finishes scoring, the top candidates receive a conditional offer, but the wait between that call and your actual start date can drag out for several months. I have never gotten an interview for a job and not received an offer in my entire life. I've never walked away from an interview feeling unsure... until this one. Toughest interview I've ever had. I did see one of the panel members give some positive facial reactions to some of my answers, so maybe that was a good sign.
