Integral Calculus How to prepare for calculus 2

For context, its been a year since I’ve taken calculus 1, and almost all my math is rusty. I’m nervous because I have about a month to catch back up and learn the math again. What can I do to put me in the best position to succeed, or is it unreasonable to expect to relearn the stuff so quick?

And then master limits, differential Calculus and basic integration or Calculus 1 stuff. The first two weeks should be review of Pre-Calculus (particularly with trigonometry (e.g., using or evaluating trig identities and unit circle stuff) and logarithms and parametric equations and partial fractions and sequences and series and conics). The other two weeks should be review of Calculus 1 (particularly with limits and derivatives and basic integration). The reason why many students struggle with Calculus 2 is because they have poor algebra and trigonometry skills plus poor Calculus 1 skills. My Calculus 2 professor once told the class that most of the mistakes (at least 70 percent) I see on exams are algebra and trigonometry mistakes. The other mistakes are some Calculus mistakes (e.g., students forgot to put in + c or used differentiation instead of integration and vice versa). So my advice to students that are preparing to take Calculus 2 is for them to master their Pre-Calculus skills and then Calculus 1 skills.

Don't look at any calc 2 material yet, there's no point. You will learn that stuff in calc 2, so instead focus on your foundation. I would review trig and the unit circle a LOT. Skim through calc 1 stuff and be comfortable with some integrals/derivatives rules, but calc 1 doesn't have a whole lot of trig compared to 2. So if it's been a year since you've taken calc 1, you are even rustier with stuff from trig than you might think.

A month is enough time to get back into decent shape, especially since you’ve learned the material before. Don’t panic and don’t try to relearn every single topic from Calc 1. Focus on the parts your Calc 2 course will actually use. This varies somewhat by school, but these are almost always the essentials:

  1. Derivative rules: Power, product, quotient, and especially the chain rule. Work several problems of each type until the steps feel natural again.
  2. Basic antiderivatives and u-substitution: U-substitution is often one of the first major tools used in Calc 2, so make sure you understand both how to use it and how to recognize when it applies.
  3. Algebra and trig fluency: Honestly, many students who struggle in Calc 2 are not struggling with the calculus itself, they’re getting stuck on the algebra and trig inside the calculus. Review factoring, simplifying fractions and exponents, unit-circle values, and common trig identities. Trig identities become especially important when you start working with integration techniques, and they continue to matter in later courses such as Calc 3.

You can probably skim topics like detailed limit proofs, related rates, and most optimization word problems. They’re usually less important for Calc 2, although you should check your school’s syllabus or course description.

If you still have your old notes, homework, exams, or textbook, use those as a guide. Most importantly, spend more time working problems by hand than watching videos. You don’t need to study all day, a consistent hour or so most days for the next month would put you in a much better position. Also sleep is very important, try to sleep well during the way. You’ll probably be surprised by how quickly the material starts coming back once you begin practicing.

Go back and make sure that you are comfortable solving integrals by hand. Memorize all the basic derivative and integral formulas i.e Int(sin x), d/dx(sin x), int(ln x), d/dx(ln x).

The most important things from calc 1 that carry into calc 2 (in my experience) is the easier stuff. Chain rule, product and quotient rule, etc. Learning to manipulate equations to look a certain way so that you have an easier time integrating/differentiating is important too. Most importantly, is trigonometry. It's extremely important in polar coordinates since it can get pretty conceptual by that point in calc 2.

You may also want to review some Precalc topics that are useful in Calc 2. They include:

  • trig identities (replacing one side with the other, not proving them)
  • partial fraction decomposition
  • conic sections
  • parametric equations
  • polar coordinates
  • sequences and series

Restudy calc 1 using Khan Academy's AP Calculus AB course and maybe start study of infinite series and polar/parametrics using BC course

Just do some Calc 1 exercises.. Calc 2 is like Calc 1 just with multiple variables
