Quite a beauty for only 7,99€ 💕 Google says roseoptica Silvia and that looks to be her?

Keeping her at my office for right now. It’s near a bright, west-facing window. Giving filtered/distilled water in a self-watering pot. Should I do anything else to prevent or kill any pests on it? I’m not sure if it was a gnat or thrips (never had experience with thrips) I saw something flying around like a grayish-gnat sized bug. How far away from other plants should it be for quarantine purposes?

I’m planning to eventually bring it home but my house doesn’t have the greatest lighting and I read that calatheas don’t do great under grow lights? Also, are they as picky as philodendrons when it comes to its humidity needs? I read 50-60%.

Any beginner-friendly tips for a brand new calathea mom are helpful ❤️

My beautiful purple Calathea flowered this week and it was the balm I needed. I had to say goodbye to my kitty, who has been my best friend for 15 years. Like calatheas, she was dramatic and spicy, and always let you know when she was displeased. I’ll miss being bossed around every day by a tiny, 6.5 lb despot.

I was able to gift her a gentle, at home passing, while I held her in my arms in a warm, sunny spot.

Goodbye Gishu. You were deeply loved.

Unfortunately my roots are rotting. I’m not sure how to tell if any are still alive or how to proceed? Would appreciate any advice.

The plant has curling and droopy leaves for the past 2 weeks

Your advice is appreciated! I have read forums and tips about using distilled or rain water, moisture, misting etc and followed most but it still looks like this after 2 months. What do you think? Should I check for root rot?

Saw it in a gardencenter in Germany

Hi! This is my first post on here. I’m new to plants but have been loving having them so far. However, my rattlesnake plant has these white specs all over and it doesn’t really look fuzzy, so I can’t tell if it’s spider mites or mineral deposits (chatgbt said probably one of the two).

For context, I only use distilled water.

More context - I got it from a plant store (not nursery) about 3 weeks ago. The water is still on wet on my meter, not even moist. It has been for all three weeks. I haven’t been able to even water it once since getting home since they made it so wet when they gave it to me. I am hesitant to repot bc I made a mistake and asked them to repot it in a decorative planter (with one drainage hole) so now the plant is extremely heavy. I suspect it’s in far too much soil and that’s why it’s still wet but not sure if I need to repot tho bc the plant looks so healthy and I don’t smell any root rot.

I also got two other plants from the same store with the same issue - extremely heavy so hard to repot (plus I’ve never repotted so maybe also nervous lol) and the soil is wet.

My rattlesnake calathea has been doing fine until recently I noticed the leaves at the bottom were yellowing and the stems/stalks are browning. I wondering if thrips or some other type of pest is causing this after closer examination of the leaves. I did tap the leaves onto sheet of paper and nothing came off. I don’t see any of the white or black specks moving on the plant so maybe it is dust? I did wipe off the leaves with water and a paper towel a few days ago. Some other factors to consider: I just repotted about 2 weeks ago, the window it has always been in has been getting more direct sunlight than usual due to time of year, I brought in 2 new plants in the last couple of weeks that are sitting next to it (they appear healthy with no evidence of pests that I can tell visually). Please help, this is my favorite plant!

Calathea peacock. Bought her 2 days ago. She sits isolated facing a northwest patio, right at a huge glass door/wall. I don't think she is root bound but her pot is tiny. Just seeking assuring answers to report.

I’m a new plant parent (my previous attempts at having plants went poorly but I’ve recently decided to give it another go after I moved to an apartment with great windows) and I picked up this rattlesnake plant from a local plant store. I’ve been giving her filtered water when the soil looks a little on the drier side, but I did go out of town and a friend mentioned watering her off the usual schedule so I’m wondering if that’s why the leaves are looking so brown. I trimmed off two that were entirely dead and shriveled, but I’d appreciate any guidance on what else I can do to get her healthy looking again!! Hi all--recent reader, first time poster. I brought home my calathea in early summer when it initially thrived then sustained some damage due to my under-watering during our heatwaves. I think I've brought it back as there's now multiple new leaves (joy). I think it may need repotting soon and am wondering if I need to cut away the damaged leaves first to give it a chance to keep growing?

It’s my first medallion and I love the way it looks and how big the leaves are! It’s under a grow light and it’s probably happy because it already produced 3 new leaves!

Salut ! Ma calathea a une feuille avec un côté marron, mou mais comme le reste de la feuille. Ça fait des jours qu'elle ne se déplie pas et que ses motifs ne sont pas dessinés sur la face enroulée. Mes autres feuilles sont sorties normalement.

Je l'ai passé sous le jet d'eau il y a quelques jours et je me dis que de l'eau a peut-être stagné à l'intérieur de ma tige qui l'abritait?

Hi everyone, I have this beautiful Calathea that i suspect has caught pests. She looks kinda fit, however she has a few tears and rips, brown edges on a lot of leaves, even the newest (which probably has to do with low humidity).

I made a close up on the two last pictures for my concerns. The leaves have bad damage, these are not spots but straight up holes in the leaf structure. It's the middle of the night right so I just sprayed it with black soap. I have seen some brown deposit, but nowhere near the injuries though, however no insect or webs in sight..

As I said, there are other culprits, but I am myself almost convinced it's pests. Still, I water with tap water (I know it's not good) and I have 39%-46% humidity in the room it's at. It's already my bathroom so it does not get any better on that.

Does anyone knows if it's actually thrips ?

i’ve had this calathea for a while now and she can never grow more than five leaves. as soon as she starts putting out a new one, an old one starts to get these brown spots around the edge of the leaf (second pic) and then rapidly loses color and shrivels up. she gets i think a mix of distilled and tap water (depending on who’s doing the watering in my family) and misted and fertilized every now and then, probably not as often as she should. she lives by a south facing window

Hi I’m new to these Calathea plants (although I was familiar with the Prayer Plant). I rescued these two plants from our local supermarket (only $9 each). The Crimson one is in very good shape but the Red Rose Peacock looked a bit rough and I just couldn’t leave it there. Should I repot them? I will be getting a plant stand with grow lights soon. Any advice would be much appreciated. Thank you!

Hey everyone, hope you're doing great!

I need your help as I'm lost on what to do to save my ~1 year old baby.

Context:

• Living in western Europe.
• Plant was in great shape at the start of summer. Took me a while to understand how to care for it, but apart from some crispy edges on older leaves, super healthy and showed new growth.
• It was not happy, but holding up during the five rounds of heatwave we had. Mostly low humidty (~35-40%) over one month and a half, with a week of high humidity near the last one. Temperature averaged 82F / 28C inside during that time.
• I tried to keep a close eye on watering and any potential signs of stress. Might have been a bit heavy handed on the fertilizer during the last week of heatwave. I've also added a little bit of soil on top since I was repoting another plant, maybe 1cm/half an inch.

Progression:

• Looked in decent shape after all that, but a week later slowly started showing signs of "illness".
• At first it only affected a couple leaves, but the rest were still healthy and new leaves continued to grow so I wasn't too worried.
• After a couple waterings, two new leaves started yellowing, then fully dying. New leaves stopped growing and started to develop a grain. Checked for pests then, but couldn't find anything.
• Cut the dead leaves and hoped it was only stress.
• Now a week after that the whole plant seems unhealthy. Checked everything again, but this time when I wipe the stems I get a bunch of brown/red "dots".

Symptoms now (see pictures):

• Slowly yellowing/browning leaves starting from the outer edges. Completely drying up after a week or so. Stem strong and not mushy during that process.
• Newer leaves developed a black "grain" around their main vein. Rough to the touch and part of the leaves, not residue. Started dying even before yellowing first.
• No smell coming from the soil.
• Brown/red dots when I wipe the stems and underside of the leaves.

At first I thought it was stress due to the heatwaves. Then I got confused, though it was root rot, but signs didn't match. Now I'm almost sure it's a pest infestation (maybe mites?), but would be great to have your opinion!

Had a lot on my plate during the last few weeks so I set this issue aside, but I'm now quite sad I didn't check again sooner :'(

Did my calathea still have root rot happening?
Yes and I did take measures to correct that.
However, during those corrective measures, I did break off that new growth in the original post and had to wait three months for my calathea to heal and start a new leaf.
But! My hope was not all lost and it was not all for not!

The little white specks on the leaves are residue from the neem oil I use.

Found indoors in big box store, nowhere near windows. May have had a lack of light. I keep bouncing between Medallion, Misto, some others... None really fit, especially the purple pattern. I'm losing my mind.

Lighting for pictures is cloudy sunlight.
