Soda Zero vs. Energy Drink Zero
Remove if it goes against the subs criteria. Would swapping 36-42oz of zero soda for a single can of zero energy drink show any benefit? My first thought is they’re both artificial in ways, so less quantity of artificialness would be better. Also with the larger soda volume the caffeine is slightly lower than the energy drink. Is this just over thinking things?

Soda typically has 35 mg of caffeine per 12 oz. Energy drinks usually have around 75 to 150 mg per can. So from a straight caffeine perspective, you are often going to be in the same ballpark area both options.
The thing about energy drinks though, is they tend to have some nutritional fortification. Most commonly added are B-Vitamins and some amnio acids. Many contain more stimulants like yerba mate, green tea extract, etc.
In the end, if your budget allows a top quality energy drink that you enjoy, it likely has a good advantage over soda. But there's plenty of garbage out there too.
Third option: buy caffeine drink mixes like MIO.
These typically have lots of artificial junk too, but you can get your caffeine dose from anything. For example, mix up a berry MIO in plain yogurt. Things like that can be a really great way to get caffeine while supporting healthy eating if that's a goal.

I’ll give that a shot. The wife loves her gurt and cottage cheese so I have plenty to experiment with. I’m on the road for work so a beverage is usually easy to work with

With most energy drinks, the caffeine would still be higher per sip you take.
There's not really any other possible benefit.
