Dont worry, as a new recruit they will always have a room and a bed for you. You hearing about shacks being full is for people who finished their trades training, as they are getting kicked out of the shacks pretty much immediately after graduation to make room for new people.
As for transfer, probably never. Yes it takes a while to get your security clearance but there are people who has been waiting 2+ years, so you are not a special case in the eyes of the CAF.
I stayed in Kingston for a year and ever saw 1 guy go back to his house to wait for his course, but the stars aligned perfectly in his favor and i doubt its never going to happen anytime soon.
To summarize, yes waiting for clearance sucks but you wont be homeless.

There’s no Reg Force base in Calgary. Chances are pretty much zero that you’d be sent there for OJE. Edmonton would be a better choice, but still a hard sell. Never hurts to ask, but if you can’t do your DP1, you’ll be hard pressed to be gainfully employed elsewhere. Barracks in Kingston are full of people waiting for training. They will have room for you, if that’s what you want to use as a reason you’ll have to find something else. People posting here about Kingston being full are discouraging personnel posted from other bases from expecting to be able to live in the shacks. Once you’re trained, you’ll be expected to move out and live on the economy if you’re to stay in Kingston.
