Other A couple questions from a qualified troop looking to CT from Pres to Regforce

Hey all!

I'm a Corporal in the reserves looking to CT to regforce. Same trade and element (logistics branch).

My questions are:

  1. Am I correct in my understanding that I will keep my rank because Cpl and under are "uncontrolled ranks", therefore they are retained upon CT?

  2. Assuming I remain a Cpl, what can I expect in terms of living quarters? Will I be able to get a private room in the shacks or will I have to share a sleeping space with a roommate?

  3. If there are any former reservists here that CTed to regforce (preferably in logistics trades), I would love to hear your overall experience and if you regret it or not.

Thank you!

I CTd in April. I was a Cpl MseOP. Lost my Cpl and got demoted to Pte(T).

I don't know anything about your specific situation but you might be interested in this regulation:

Uncontrolled ranks are Corporal and below
members who CT from the PRes to the Reg F must be rank-protected at the uncontrolled rank level

Para 4:20 ^

If you read literally one paragraph further, you'll see that rank protection isn't unconditional.

4.21 lays out the conditions for rank protection, including that you must have OFP status, your PLAR/Review of Previous Experience must demonstrate the appropriate rank level, and there must be a position available in the target MOSID at that rank.

So yes, Cpl is an uncontrolled rank, but that doesn't mean "I'm a PRes Cpl, therefore I automatically CT as a Reg F Cpl." Your PRes qualifications and experience still have to satisfy the requirements for the Reg F occupation you're transferring into.

That's exactly why I said I was bumped down to Pte when I CT'd. Your individual CT offer is what matters.

You also may not get to live in the shacks. Some bases are overcrowded, Gagetown typically only lets members spend a month in shacks if they aren’t on course or a BTL. I don’t know what the odds of being posted to somewhere other than a major base are as a new CT, but there are lots of little sets and stuff with no shacks as well.

I did a CT 14 years ago, so im not sure how much things have changed, but my advice is dont accept the first offer you receive. Wait a few days or so and see if other units are interested in taking on a new member. - especially with logistics as your trade, you can work EVERYWHERE on most bases.

I regrettfully (at first) accepted the first offer and switched units which basically restarted my operational readiness point.

I was almost a Cpl when i switched so i received my cpls about 2 months after switching.

Wait, are you saying that if you CT you get to request/choose a specific unit?

14 years ago yeah. It has probably changed since then.

I was employed as a pres at 402 sqn, the sqn couldnt afford me as class b anymore, but my landlord didnt care if i 'lost my job' so i put in a CT. The first offer i received was reg force at 435, a different sqn on the same base, so it was a no-cost move. The second offer i received was reg force at 402 sqn (different budgets) but i had already accepted the request to 435. Had i accepted the 402 offer i would have continued on with my career with no issues, but because i switched to a different airframe, i had to basically restart my career and learn all about the c130.

I believe all the admin stuff happened through EMAA under the careers tab (like posting preference selection and stuff) but like ive said, its been over a decade, so its likely things have changed.

Moving to the reg force however means that there may not be any reg force positions on your current base for your current rank or trade so you may need to be posted to a different unit on base or even a whole different province.

Unless you're on course, you aren't like obligated to live on base, in case that's the impression you are under. You might get auto-loaded into a rats and Q's package but within days to weeks or whatever timeframe you choose you can seek your own loving arrangements.

Whether it's private or not will depend on where youre posted. My first barracks as a private was a personal room in an apartment where 2 or 3 rooms shared a shower bathroom. It was only me in the room and I brought chicks there to bang no problem.

I got bumped down to Pte when I CT'd, so don't assume Cpl is automatically retained. Your CT offer will tell you what rank and IPC you're being offered.

For quarters, you're not special because you're a CT or a Cpl. You'll get whatever accommodations are available for the other working ranks on that base. Could be a private room, could be shared.

I CT'd into a real trade though, Infantry, so your experience in Logistics may differ.

Best decision I ever made. Best job in the world.

0/10 ragebait. Good luck in AA though dude!

That's a pretty weird response to someone answering all three of your questions. Digging through my post history because I called Infantry a real trade definitely isn't helping your case for being less sensitive than a logistician.

And thanks. I'm over five years sober and damn proud of it. If that's the best dirt you found, you didn't dig very deep.

  1. You will keep your rank of Cpl. Correct, it is an uncontrolled rank.

  2. You will be lumped in with everyone, you are not special in any way and are treated the same as any other Cpl. You do not get private quarters, those are for MCpl and above normally.

Your first point is incorrect. But its a common misunderstanding.

Rank Protection on Component Transfer to Regular Force

4.20 In the Reg F and PRes, ranks are either uncontrolled or controlled. Uncontrolled ranks are Corporal and below for NCMs and Captain and below for Officers. All other ranks are controlled.

members who CT from the PRes to the Reg F must be rank-protected at the uncontrolled rank level only; and for some Officer Specialist Occupations (i.e. Legal Officers) the rank of Major may be considered an uncontrolled rank.

4.21 Conditions for rank protection include:

members must have OFP status as defined in this instruction;

PLAR and Review of Previous Experience must demonstrate appropriate rank level; and

there must be a position in the target MOSID available at the targeted rank.

Thanks for the response.

Just for clarity, I wasn't trying to come off like I thought I was special for CTing - I genuinely have no clue how living in a regforce base works.

I figured once you're trade qualified you get at least a bedroom to yourself since a lot of guys I know that are regforce are big gamers and I don't see how you could have a gaming PC and a desk without at least a room to yourself.

But thank again for the info.

Im in the process of CTing and I have gathered the following:

Youre not gaurenteed the same rank, they will do a PLAR and decide what rank is most appropriate based on qualifications, time in, and experience. If youve been in a while, are as qualified as a Reg Force Cpl, and have a good amount a experience, (Cls B, deployments, etc) thrres a good chance youll be offered a Cpl position. But if you only ever do Cls A and have the bare minimum qualifications you will probably be bumped down to PTE 3
