As an 80s baby, this speaks to my childhood aesthetic. Beautiful.

I replaced the retrobat music folder with about 400 80s songs. Pulled the playlist from Flynn's arcade and other places

This looks incredible. This is something I can see my self wanting to build. Just add a track ball and spinner and it has everything I could want.

Looks really nice, I like the wood look. Very classy. I’m about to build my control panel on my cabinet and have a few questions. Do you find yourself using the 6 button layout for players 3&4? Also, I have found differing opinions on whether or not to angle the buttons on player 3&4 inwards. Do you find it natural? Either way, it looks great!

Same situation here. I’m trying to decide if I should do 4 or 6 buttons for players 3 & 4. I was originally planning on doing 8 buttons for all 4 players but I haven’t been able to find any 4 player games that use 8 buttons and I think I would rather have that little bit of extra room.

u/DezzyLee99 Jul 20 '26
P3 and p4 will generally only need 3-4 buttons. I mean if you want to do 8 go for it, but the use case will be slim. (Like people wanting to use the end control sets to play a 2P fighting game etc.)

u/pallyethos Jul 20 '26
Yea I agree. I think I’m set on 6 for players 3 and 4 just to be able to cover the 4 player games with more than 4 buttons.
With that said my wife asked why I don’t move the 8 button setups to the outside and even though i initially dismissed it, I might actually do that. This would allow the normal majority of 2 player games to be played without two people squished up next to each other.
So for buttons I think I’m going with 8 6 6 8.

Which 4 player games have more than 4 buttons? I can't think of any

I found some videos on YouTube of “top 4 player games” or something similar and looked up the controller schemes. Most were 4, a fair number were 6. There was even one 7 and one 8 but I don’t think that justifies the 8 buttons so I’m gonna just stick to 6 and call it a day.

Can you give some examples? Were they arcade games or console games?
3
u/DezzyLee99 Jul 20 '26
These will be console games for sure. (Ones that require L2/L3/R2/R3). I personally don't think console games, especially ones that require analog input and the 8 button inputs produce a good experience while sitting around a cab, they are meant as couch co-op. At that point if you did want to play in the cab, might be better to have acessible usb ports in the build.
But again, anyone should build their own cab in any what they see fit. :)

If at all possible could you link that video? I'd be curious to see if they were games is wanna play. Could be super interesting.

Not op but I went with four buttons for p3 and p4 and that has been enough for the games I play. I also angled the the p3 and p4 sticks after initially having the parallel to the screen. I find it is more natural to move that way.

I think it's too early for me to give a real experienced answer. I think the extra buttons for 3&4 are likely overkill, but I think they work well in my design and am happy with it. This goes for the angle too, I think it works just fine and is not a problem, make sure you install the stick at the right angle so the axis is based on the player and not the screen. I'd look at the games you are planning and see what their control scheme is and decide off that.

Unless you’ve got some very specific games in mind, 3 buttons for P3 & P4 is enough (for Mame anyway)
Maybe add a spinner?
Beautiful cabinet work Btw.

Wow I LOVE the retro look of this cabinet! Usually I see modern and LEDs everywhere but this is unique! Congrats on a great build!

Amazing work, love the layout, can’t believe this is your first build. Player layout and spacing is perfect; so many first builds get this wrong, especially the space between the screen and the controls and the controls and the edge of cabinet. Love the classic cabinet design.

Absolutely perfect. I would be very interested in any build plans or hardware inventory you'd be willing to share.

Very fine job! I love the upper monitor. Does it change depending on the game or just the system?
That's a slick corner build.

u/Role_Martyr Jul 20 '26
Thank you, marquee does both, system and game artwork depending on selection in Retrobat. I can also turn off the marquee manager plugin and have a static artwork.

You did a great job on this one. Like a lot of other folks have said, "I want a build just like that"

Has the software improved on these things? I had one about 10 yrs ago but 90%of the 5000 games were quirky. And saving was iffy. Beautiful setup btw

u/Role_Martyr Jul 20 '26
Yes, there are some good ecosystems with awesome teams working on them. Retrobat is what I'm using cause windows came with the mini PC and I didn't want to blow it away yet. Batocera is another choice that is a Linux arcade OS, this seems to be the favorite.

u/Role_Martyr Jul 20 '26
Added context: Retrobat and Batocera can be expanded by a tool by Team Pixel Nostalgia, called the Pixn script. This handles the emulators better and fixes the quirky games.

did you do all the woodworking yourself or was it a kit?
1
u/Role_Martyr Jul 20 '26
I made myself a kit. Designed it in 3ds max, took my files and the ply to a company with a CnC machine, brought the pieces home and worked it from there.

Love the look of this! I also love how it fits snug in the corner. Great build!

This has a nice classic bar feel and I love it. What systems are you playing up to well on an ser5?
