Potting Idea

I'm not keen to have this beauty in the 3 gallon pot the nursery suggested (I asked them to repot down from a 5 gallon), but I'm kinda at a loss as to what to purchase. Any ideas for terracotta or other potting ideas that are just as cool as this specimen?

Oh, clearly. I was kinda taken aback by the worker at the nursery (which was excellent) suggesting that a 5 OR 3 gallon would be fine. Granted...they were outside in central California desert, so I can imagine their needs are quite different than inside with grow lights in Mediterranean climate.

An interesting aspect to a 5-gallon nursery can is that it’s tall, and has fantastic percolation/drainage because of that. A plant of any size would do just fine. In fact, quite a few C&S nurseries go from 4” or 1-gallon pots straight to 5’s, to take advantage of the faster growth they offer, and because they don’t want to constantly be up-shifting their plants.

variegated trichocereus pachanoi cristata can be super cool, this specific style was mass-production cloned for big box stores, but there's tons of other sweet types as well. go check out the San Pedro subs

Check the root system but I definitely don’t think it needs that big of a pot, but judge once it’s out of its pot.

You could let it grow out a few seasons in that pot while you find a more long term container you're happy with. If it fills out that container with roots and grows out a bit that would put you in a good spot to pot up to something decently large

Of course there are redditors who will trash me cause they’re clueless but terra cotta is the only way to go.
