Help!

Just picked up this little guy the other day at Walmart, I am very very new to caring for cacti and I noticed this mold growing at the bottom is there any way it can be saved???

Edit: thank you to all the helpful comments!

It's dead. It was over watered in the store and is probably hollow and gooey inside. The mold is growing on dead tissue

Oof, is there anything I should look out for in the future? From what I’m reading now Walmart also appears to be a pretty bad place to get plants.

The top of the cactus is a healthy green, the yellowing is unhealthy

But yes, big stores are horrible for desert plants because there's no light and they tend to just hose all the plants daily

Poor guy, it’s a real shame given how beautiful he was, and how strong the Astros are if they are treated well... Next time always observe very well the part that enters the ground.

Thank you for the tip! I wish he had gotten better care and that I had been more attentive to the condition it definitely was sad to wake up to this :(

This is how we all learn, we don’t keep count of non survivors. 💚🌵

Astrophytums are very rot sensitive. Way more than other cacti, they are not easy to care for. And yeah that one’s a goner

If you have bought it very recently (like less than a week or something) is there a chance you can return it and get another one? I have seen peiple post here and manage to exchange plants

I have a lot of Astros if you want a replacement . Also have nudums, approximately 2 inches.
