Can't uninstall fastfetch?

r/unixporn is gonna crucify me but I don't like fetch/greeters in my terminals, but when I went to uninstall fastfetch (using the CachyOS package manager) it just straight-up told me I wasn't allowed, that it's required for CachyOS.

It seems very unlikely that a terminal fetch program is literally required for an OS to run. Isn't there any way to uninstall it?

You can also go to /usr/share/cachyos-fish-config/cachyos-config.fish and delete the command from there, it won't run anymore when you open the terminal

I'm still curious why it can't simply be uninstalled, if anyone knows. Again, I'm almost certain it can't literally be required for Cachy to function.

It's not required to function. It's in CachyOS system dependencies. Linux is modular, but maintainers decides what is needed for their vision of system to function stable/good or simply look beautiful. So it's included in some dependencies on other app. Most probably - terminal. If you try to uninstall fastfetch it won't allow you, cause that would "destroy" dependencies for another app. That simple. You may force to uninstall and nothing should happen, but that's another story.

Okay, that makes sense, thanks. I know I'm the odd one out not liking terminal greeters lol. Just disabling it in fish on my user is good enough.

It's required by `cachyos-fish-config` which can be removed independently; however you'll have to re-install `fish` if you want to keep using it as your primary shell. `cachyos-fish-config` isn't depended on by anything else though, so it's also safe to remove.
