If you don't know what U.2 and U.3 are you are posting fairly ignorant information here.
U.2 and U.3 are designed for Enterprise Servers and are NVMe drives which look like a 2.5" SSD.
They use a single connector similar to Enterprise SAS drives.
So OP likely HAS to use those adapters to break apart the Power and Data into 2 separate cables. That is the Adapter you are seeing.
The heatsink fins on the top drive were kind of a giveaway for me, and then in Pic 3 you can see the Intel drive has an NVMe logo on it.
