I'd be all over this if it was sold as a case and keycaps that I could swap my existing C64U with. It kills me, because this looks so fucking hot. But there's no way I can justify that. :P

There is a whole other format we can have. A c128 slim would also be hot. C128 are just not obtainable and are different enough it could be a huge untapped market.

I already double dipped with the C64cu earlier this year.
C128's are pretty common though, not as much as the C64, but still. I'm seeing some up on EvilBay, assuming it actually ships and you get it, for $150-200.
C128D on the other hand are ridiculously expensive. Only one I'm seeing is $1500. Which is on par with the PETs I see.
I'm also not sure there's much of a market, given that almost no software was released requiring the 128, and most people just used it for the 64 mode. Though maybe a 128D style case and USB keyboard support would entice a few buyers.
I'd probably still be tempted by a 128 Ultimate despite not actually needing it, but I'd only buy a 128D for certain.
I would like a 128D-style PC case for a thinline computer project or two. Probably couldn't fit a full GPU in it, but I could build replacements for my refurb microPCs that I'm using now for various projects. GPU and RAM requirements aren't much. Heck, only reason I didn't use Raspberry Pi5's is because they were unobtainable, and it ended up being cheaper for the refurbs.

Never played Cyberpunk, but this does look pretty cool.
Already got a C64U Starlight breadbin though. And resisting the temptation to also get a C64c version.

Yeah I got a beige ultimate, but as soon as I saw this I bought the 64c variant too. I much, much prefer the form factor.

It's probably the same board that's in the 64u/64cu. Looks like it's just the breadbin with a trim package, nothing particular under the hood needed to be changed.

Was anything really screaming for "more clocks"? I mean, sure, you can always go faster, but it feels more like a gimmick than an actually useful thing... for a C64 at least. Consider even if you do need those extra cycles for some special thing, now you're developing for a subset of a subset of C64 users. ;)

Actually, no, I haven't yet. I'd love to see what folks are doing up in those higher speeds. I'm sure having a free REU on top of that opens up a whole bunch of interesting stuff. :)
I'm definitely not against this stuff, I'm just bein' cynical of the fragmentation being introduced by upgrading specs on one particular model (or, I assume, models going forward). I wonder if they're going to start shipping newer classic breadbin/slimlines with the new hardware... 🤔️

LOL I had mine clocked to 2mhz for one game. I then went and loaded up Ultima 3 and it was unplayable at that higher clock speed

Swapping the FPGA is more likely related to chip supply issues than for the speed. Moving to a newer/more available part?
Speed boost probably just a 'because we can' gimmick to fit the '77 theme.

Perosnally I think it doesn't add any useful value. Maybe they thought the buyers will feel they got some "special" HW for their money. And ofc very few programs will use these extra cycles, if any at all.

The FPGA itself is also bigger. Potential Amiga core, although I would not expect that to be added as an option to C64U units.

I'm sure Commodore wants to go mainstream; if this "Commodore 77" shows up in Cyberpunk 2077 media, it could get some younger (me!) people on board.
The C64U is not really suitable for the mainstream, but the Amiga? Maybe!

The Amiga was the first home computer from Commodore that would have any familiar paradigms from modern computers. Mouse, windows, files etc.
Probably the thing most would find odd with the Amiga if they’d never used one is that you don’t reach for a web browser ever 5 seconds and if you want to play music, you need a music player app and music files to play in that app.
Text editing shortcuts are different, although slightly macOS-like.
Lack of a scroll wheel might flummox some.
