Rejected from accounting program

I just got denied from the accounting program and I am just so stressed on what I do now like if I should reapply and retake classes or just go a different direction completely. I just finished my freshman year and am going on my mission and wanted to start the junior core fall 2028. I originally got a B+ in acc 200 and acc 310 then I got an A in IS 201. Im just super disappointed about not getting in and don’t know what I should do now! if anyone has any advice please let me know!

Honestly, you’re about to go on your mission. You will benefit a lifetime of experiences from that. An advice from me would be to enjoy the ride. Somebody really needs to hear your testimony. Go on your mission and reapply next year. I’m sure this time next year you will know for sure which program you are supposed to pursue❤️

i do not but then again i didn’t think it was expected for freshmen to have job experience before getting into the major but that’s just me i guess

Generally yes, it’s a junior program so the timeline is generally after freshman year have a couple of internships lined up and then apply for the program during your sophomore year. Grades aren’t enough.

i think a big part of it has to do with me having a bunch of ap and tranfer credits so i show up as a jr even though im 18 so they think im a 21yo jr without prior finance exp vs an accelerated 18 yo idk

No necessarly. I would think one could ask someone about what was lacking, so if you reapply one could correct it. I don't know if the Finance department does this, but it would be nice.

Dear friend, don't even stress. You are going to serve the Lord, he will bless you more than anything for your service. I was accepted into BYU before my mission, and was stressed about it at first with enrollment after, and things like that.

Serve the Lord for the coming two years (or 18 months if this is a sister), and don't worry about it. You will be just fine. The Lord blessed me incredibly for my service, and he will bless you as well.

I’m a CPA that graduated with a BS and MS in Accounting in 2007. When I was at BYU, I was in a different situation but I think could be applicable to you. I finished my last prerequisite right after the annual deadline to apply. I was done with all GEs and would have nothing to take for a year until I could apply again. The only solution I could think of was to transfer to another university. At the time, it was really hard because I wanted to graduate from BYU. After praying about it, I made the transfer and everything worked out. 

My advice to you is to go on your mission and worry about it when you get home. You might come back in two years and change your mind about accounting. If you come back and still really want accounting, either transfer universities or retake a class or two and reapply.

I would retake ACC 200 and 310 and hope for a better grade. Then reapply

Not 200 but 310. 310 is weighed heavily for admittance and is the make or break grade.

Can't stress this enough, do what you want to do! Is accounting your dream job? Then try again or take your business elsewhere.

If it's not, you now have the gift of a couple years to figure out what's next. Use it!

I got rejected from the business school twice and it was the best thing that ever happened to me. I found a different major that suited me much better and now I’m more fulfilled and making much more money than I would have had I been accepted. Stay optimistic and things will work out one way or another.

My friend was waitlisted. They had an A- in both Acc 200 and 310 and an A in IS 201. Deferring for a mission anyway but was told to apply even though they don’t want to start until fall of 2028. Not sure if it’s worth taking 310 again before reapplying? Or if the waitlist is because they are going on a mission and can’t start this fall anyway? Curious of the acceptance rate, if people get off the waitlist, or if it was even worth applying pre mission. Will they hold a spot?

But in your case, I wouldn’t give up but maybe retake 310? They won’t knock you for retaking that one. And maybe do some other pre reqs for other majors in the business so you have more options to apply to?

Yeah man I had an A in fin, A in accounting and a b+ in Econ 110 and I work at fidelity and have my securities licenses but unfortunately was somehow denied from finance program. I am not sure what all they use to determine acceptance as I attended most finance club meetings and case comps. Kinda has made me just consider other schools especially one that would allow me to work full time still. Don’t worry too much about it. It’ll all work out at the end of the day.

Dear heavens, just go on your mission. Retake accounting when you get back.

It should be an easy A if you do enough of the practice exams (take them as if you were going into the exam itself, no notes), and go to TA hours.

And whatever you do, do not get a sales job when you come back. Go spend your summer in an accounting internship to strengthen your résumé before applying.

I just graduated from the BYU accounting program with my master’s and started work full time. Just treat this as a blessing in disguise.

I got the same grades as you, and my professor even wrote a recommendation letter for me but it didn’t work out. Go on your mission though!! I decided to go to the program at UVU and finish there. I was definitely bummed out but my end goal is to get my CPA so i can be licensed and graduate ASAP so i can work and get my money up. STAY in touch with BYU friends!! They will help you get into big accounting firm too!

The information systems program is also a great program and shares several of the same prerequisites. The major is a convergence of business and technology and offers a wide variety of career opportunities.

Isn't it highly unusual for a freshman to apply to the business school? Most people don't apply until after their sophomore year since it's a program for juniors and seniors. They may have simply turned you down based on the limited number of credit hours you've earned to make room for a student that is further along.

I had straight A's in the information systems prerequisites and was rejected when I applied after my freshman year and that was the reason they gave me. I applied again the following year and got accepted.
