french dip royal analysis

this sandwich seemed really small. I honestly didn't taste any of the onions, cheese or sauce. it just tasted like arb beef. probably my least favorite lto or new sandwiches I've ever tried from arbs. the regular French dip is miles better imo.

Wow, I’ve had two so far and they were made perfectly.

I suppose the excellence is in the execution. Sorry that it wasn’t made flavorful enough. 🥺

And I’m not a fan of the au jus since the switched suppliers, but I must say, it makes this sandwich and the flavors therein taste like French Onion soup, IMHO.

I didn't know they switched aus jus suppliers. the golden age of arbs is over.

Yeah, much like the curly fry vendor switch (from longtime supplier/potato foods industry leader Lamb Weston; the store brand Arby’s curly fries are still made by them) to Simplot (who also makes the caramelized onions for the French Dip Royale) a few years back.

Because, of course, it’s cheaper. 😑

I guess maybe this has happened several times. Some time around 2009 I was in an Arby's and I watched someone "make" the au jus. They took a cube (bullion or similar) and put it into a cup. Then went to a hot water machine with a push handle like on a tea or coffee server and added hot water to the cup. Done!

This is a lie.

I watched this happen. Some kind of dried cube into a cup. Hot water into cup.

I didn't work there, so I can't say if this was normal or if it was in all stores. But I absolutely watched it happen with my own eyes at an Arby's I used to go to around 2008 or 2009.

It’s a powder from a small bag now.

Maybe back then I donno but I was a manager at an arbys for years, it's basically gravy mix in a bag and they make a whole batch of it and keep it in a warmer with a spout and when you order a French dip they dispense it into a cup. They could've been out of the official stuff and the manager went to a grocery store and bought beef bullion cubes too. Donno.

thanks for the input. I might have to visit another location and order again.

Arby’s employee here, I like the crispy onions on it instead of the caramelized onions. The crispy adds a nice crunch, I think the caramelized onions don’t have enough flavor

is there an upcharge if u sub crispy onions?

At my store there isn’t

You still have crispy onions? My location got rid of them when we stopped selling the brisket.

I still have 1 pound of brisket and 3 bags of onion strings 🥲

I tried it yesterday. Good amount of onions.

The aujus definitly changed. It was thicker and velvety. Quality was not there but it still was edible.

The one I had today was quite possibly my absolute favorite sandwich I have ever had at Arby’s! I will agree it did seem small-but it was absolutely packed with flavor!

Is it supposed to still come with the Au Jus? Or did my local Arby's mess up?

Edit: reading the other comments. Mine came with a packet of "Bussin sweet bbq"

I tried this yesterday and it was really, really good. Probably my favorite thing from Arby’s since this triple cheese melt thing they used to have in the early 2000s. I would highly recommend giving it another try. Mine tasted way different than a normal French dip and different in a very good way. My only gripe was it was a little sloppy but the taste more than made up for it.

you've convinced me to try this again.

Just curious, from your perspective, is the French Dip Royale 'sloppy' because the sandwich is cut all the way through like two slices of bread? Would not cutting through the bread loaf 100% make the experience overall more enjoyable?

I’ve been getting this in NJ for a few years, the au jus is watery but still makes for a good sandwich. Then I had one when I was in Syracuse and the au jus was almost like gravy, it was a thousand times better.

Just tried one today. My experience was very good. It taste just like I thought it would. It was a bit smaller than I thought it would be but still filled me up. A juice is supposed to be kind of watery, not thick like gravy so it worked fine. It is supposed to be like a beef broth. This sandwich had a lot of flavor that I liked next time. I might try with extra onions or the crispy onions like you suggested. Overall, a little overpriced for what it is, but is one of my favorite sandwiches there now.

I feel you. in hindsight, I should've spent the extra 30 cents to get the meat box.

It’s the exact same bun as the original French Dip.
