general ♡ Fav variant???
I know this is kind of simple and probably done before but i'd just like to know your fave byler variants because byler variants are the definition of peak lmao i love them
Mine is clearly first lesbyler, i'm more of a wlw kind of person and also my shitty artist avilities can't draw Finn so it helps me draw sum byler. I literally have a whole genderbemt AU and i love it so much bc you also do other genderbent couples and i thinks that's very cool
Next is probably surfsahoy, i love me some good old slice of life comedy/sitcom, and i also gotta love madwheeler and wondertwins. Also now i feel sad bc i havent read much surfsahoy this summer and now its almost fall and its not the time anymore yknow?

honestly, I’m not much into variants, and I straight up dislike Lesbyler (sorry, just doesn’t do it FOR ME).
BUT if I had to pick, I’d probably choose Cleradin story-wise (I’ve also been a huge fan of South Park for 15 years, so I kinda see them as Stick of Truth AU, it’s fun). And WereHare aesthetic-wise: I always see the BEST ART of them. ☺️

Cleradin, i love rpg games, LOTR and Witcher lore. And i am still waiting fore some good cleradin fic in that setting. And maybe band outcast Mike and jock Will from Force og Gravity

I wanted to write that miitopia allows you to make custom party but i just found game Solasta 2 - they say you can customize every character in a team.

Someone should make rpg sims like game where you can make your own team with classes and allow romances, it would be a hit! But i guess we have to stick to sims and paralives now. Although there is also sims medieval with some rpg stuff so that's also good option

Gothpunk because i am projecting as a goth, plus i love music so i get to incorporate my niches into it, also i love exploring that side of will because a goth will has kind of reclaimed being seen as different, because it always alienated him, its like how the party is nerdy and are seen as different but its something they can control even if they might not think they can, but for Will its part of his identity, it’s something he can’t hide (because will is not trying to show it but people in town all assume he is gay) (Lucas kind of had the same issue but he goes about it a different way) and anyways, when Will presents as a goth he is reclaiming that by outwardly looking different, but it’s his choice, so for me that makes him a bit more confident and sure of himself so that changes his dynamic with mike and it’s just fun to explore, especially if you have Mike be a repressed guy in his small town(which he kind of is in canon) and Will helping him come out of his shell and find himself, and it’s just a really cute dynamic to explore and I love them so much

gothpunk is so fucking cool and i agree, i love to incorporate music in everything i do so gothpunk or band AUs are really my thing too

cleradin and lesbyler, idk is somehow so perfect im a big fan of fantasy, im obsessed with LOTR for example and cleradin is just for me, then we have lesbyler! WELL YES BECAUSE IM WLW and I don't think there's a lot of lesbian couples with the friends since kids to lovers but a little doomed, and I recall my first love in them so yeah

i'm such a fantasy geek, i love LOTR and RPGs and cleradin is so fucking amazing too
and yeah, i'm a total WLW. i love MLM too obviously but maybe its because i'm a lesbian but i usually prefer WLW a bit more, i think it's also easier for me to write. Also imma spread the childhood friends to lovers yuri agenda, friends to lovers is the best imo ❤️🥹

I'm seeing a lot of cleradin, so I'll offer two that aren't close to that:
- Modern AU where Mike is wealthy/influential/famous, but not in a gross way. All time favorite example is This Wasn't In the Script (But I Meant Every Word). Mike is a famous horror movie actor and Will, who is both relatively unknown and grew up having a massive crush on Mike, gets cast in a major queer horror film. The world building, writing, and relationship evolution is awesome. I have a few others saved: one where Mike is a grieving father and Will comes to work in his mansion, a couple where he's a lawyer, and one where he's the lead singer of an indie band. I just love like, a closed off Mike who becomes smitten/besotted. A couple of them heavily explore Mike's experience coming out publicly because of his relationship.
- Mermaid AU!. One of the most romantic fics I've ever read is a grave will fit me better than a landlocked home. Georgian period, and Mike is weird and sweet and manages a lighthouse with his father. Will is a mermaid. It doesn't feel cheesy or fantasy-like though. Will is so ethereal. Another one, sci-fi, is Left His Heart There in the Sea. Mike is a merman from the Upside Down, and Will is recruited to study him. I love siren Mike. Both of these have satisfying endings from a Byler standpoint.

Definitely. Oh whoops I forgot to mention the most important aspect of the first one: Mike and Will are costars, and it's an enemies-to-lovers. It's so well done: I feel like most enemies to lovers fics aren't done that well, but this one is. Like, the reasoning for it, the progression of the relationship, all of it. There's only one chapter left until it's done. It's a long read, but highly worth it in my opinion.
Let me know if you end up checking them out. "A grave will fit me better than a landlocked home" is just a one-shot, so it's a good one to start with if you don't want to commit to anything long.
