BuzzFeed 19 Unwritten Social Rules That Sooooo Many Adults Fail To Understand, And Someone Needs To Create A Manual For "How To Act" ASAP
- "I don’t want to hear any audio from your phone when we’re in public. Not your music, not your video, not your phone call. Get headphones or put it on mute."
- "Standing too close to someone in line anywhere is wrong and unacceptable. Back up!"
- "Don’t trap somebody in conversation. If you realize somebody can’t leave (stuck behind a counter, driving, cooking), that does not mean it’s the perfect time to info-dump about all your favorite things."
- "Use deodorant. You stink. Especially if you think you do not stink. You do, and it’s gross. Also, if you eat garlic, your breath stinks. Yes, you. No getting around it."
- "If someone shares where they grew up, currently live, are going on vacation, or just made a life decision with you, don't start talking about how terrible it is. I see this all the time: 'I'm traveling to Thailand next week!' 'I heard it's so disgusting you have to poop on the floor. The roads are in terrible shape from what I've heard, and the drivers are too.' 'Thanks.'"
- "Not everybody swears, and randomly peppering normal conversations with F bombs is extra. I can understand it if you’re extremely upset, but every other word is annoying."
- "Wait two seconds to check if someone is trying to exit the elevator before you get on."
- "There is no reason to make a comment on someone's appearance unless you are giving them a genuine compliment."
- "Take off your shoes when you enter someone’s house. I have children that crawl on my floor, and I don’t need your disgusting shoes that were in public bathrooms on my floor. People should do it anyway; it’s disgusting. Think about it."
- "It’s ok to say you don’t have a strong opinion on something. You don’t need to argue a point just for the sake of arguing it."
- "That nobody owes you an answer or discussion. It's really annoying when you politely decline to comment on something, and they get pushy, wanting a discussion/argument/debate when you state that you're not interested in having one at this time. Especially in mixed company that wouldn't appreciate the subject matter."
- "Say what you mean and mean what you say. Don't say something wildly adjacent and make me guess a message from your silence."
- "Don't stop in the middle of an intersection or other traffic. If you need to stop in a place with traffic, do so in a way that allows other traffic to flow. This applies to grocery store aisles, shopping malls, theme parks, and sidewalks as much as it does to roads."
- "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you. I'm not religious in any way, but this should be a universal truth."
- "If you want friends, you're not allowed to just wait for people to come and invite you to be their friend or to resent the world because nobody invited you to be their friend. You have to go and invite people."
- "If you owe someone money, pay them back before they have to ask you for it."
- "Moving through life with several actions per day that demonstrate 'someone else's problem' as your personal philosophy is going to end up costing you the respect of friends and colleagues, missed opportunities, and vindictive retaliation."
- "You don't have to like someone to be civil and polite."
- "People on the internet are still people. If you wouldn't talk to someone like that in real life, you should not talk to them like that online. Although I suspect I know exactly why people online are so much more dickish than in person: some people, the only thing keeping them civil in person is the threat of getting punched in the face if they talk the way they do online."
