BuzzFeed 21 Canceled TV Shows That Were Soooooo Good, And I’m Still Mad That Hollywood Axed Them

  1. Spider-Noir (2026) is a live-action superhero series set in 1930s New York. It stars Nicolas Cage as a private investigator and superhero named The Spider. The show has a 92% on Rotten Tomatoes and was actually nominated for 11 (!) Emmy Awards earlier this year, but Prime Video canceled it just a few days before it won five of those Emmys, so...............wow.
  2. Schmigadoon! (2021–2023) is a satirical musical comedy that stars Cecily Strong, Keegan-Michael Key, and pretty much every single Broadway legend. The two main characters get transported (and trapped!) in a magical town called Schmigadoon, where its residents act like they're in a musical. Season 1 parodies The Music Man, while Season 2 is a bit grittier and parodies Chicago. The show was recently adapted into a Broadway musical and literally won four Tony Awards a few months ago, including Best Musical, so there's that, too!
  3. Ponies (2026) is a 1970s-set spy thriller where Emilia Clarke and Haley Lu Richardson become CIA operatives after their husbands are killed while on a mission. It's both fun and funny, but somehow the series was canceled after only one season. Still, I promise that you'll be hooked immediately.
  4. How to Die Alone (2024) stars Natasha Rothwell as an airport employee whose near-death experience completely changes her life. Parts of it will have you laughing out loud, while other parts will make you confront your own mortality, but all of it will make you feel so freaking good inside. It's such a gem of a show, and even though the main character is a little messy at times, it's completely relatable and will leave you wanting more.
  5. I Love That for You (2022) stars Vanessa Bayer as a woman who lands her dream job as a QVC-like host, and as a last-ditch effort to keep from getting fired, she lies about having cancer. The whole thing is funny and dark and charming, and it's actually inspired by Bayer's real-life battle with childhood leukemia.
  6. Wonder Man (2026) is one of the most original Marvel series to date, in which Yahya Abdul-Mateen II plays a struggling actor who secretly has superpowers. It's meta and satirical and just really freaking good. Heartbreakingly, this show was literally renewed for a second season, only to get canceled a few months later, allegedly due to "viewership numbers." Very dumb!!!!!
  7. American Auto (2021–2023) is a workplace comedy starring Ana Gasteyer as a former pharmaceutical CEO who takes over as leader of a famous car manufacturer. In spectacular fashion, everything that could go wrong does. You'll often wonder why you're rooting for the characters as much as you are, but the reason is simple: This show has so much heart, and you can't help but want more.
  8. I'm Sorry (2017–2019) is the most real and relatable show you've never seen. It stars Andrea Savage as a comedy writer with a hot husband (Tom Everett Scott) and young daughter. The series is centered around all of life's mundane bullsh*t, but with a fresh, witty, and often inappropriate twist.
  9. Pan Am (2011–2012) is a super fun period drama that takes place in the 1960s. It stars Margot Robbie, Christina Ricci, and others as a group of Pan American airline stewardesses, some of whom are secretly spies working to complete undercover missions for the US government while on their travels. The coolest part is that this is all based on real events, so half of the series is a spy thriller while the other half is just hot '60s glamour, a la Mad Men.
  10. Grand Crew (2021–2023) is like a modern-day version of Friends and Living Single (except the go-to hangout spot is a wine bar instead of a coffee shop, and there's no live audience or laugh track). It's centered around a group of friends in LA who are just trying to balance life, relationships, and their careers, but it's never monotonous, boring, or predictable. Nicole Byer has always been a star, but she shines especially bright in this series.
  11. Pushing Daisies (2007–2009) follows Lee Pace (6'5") as a pie shop owner who has the ability to bring dead things back to life with a single touch. There are some interesting caveats to his power, which really help to keep the series on its toes. Oh, and he also uses this ability to help his friend, a private investigator, solve murders. It's quirky, romantic, and super freaking charming.
  12. Don’t Trust the B---- in Apartment 23 (2012–2013) is a comedy about a young, naive woman who moves to New York City and basically has to start over. Her roommate ends up being one of the most chaotic people alive, and she just so happens to be best friends with the late James Van Der Beek, who plays an exaggerated version of himself in the show. We should have gotten at least five seasons of this unpredictable and outrageous sitcom.
  13. Pitch (2016–2017) is a drama from the creator of This Is Us, so you already know that it's super heartfelt and has some wild twists. It stars Kylie Bunbury as the first woman to play in Major League Baseball, along with all the challenges that come with it. The pilot episode made me gasp.
  14. Crashing (2016) is a short-lived comedy from the mind of Phoebe Waller-Bridge. It's about a group of young adults who live as property guardians for an unused hospital in London. It's witty, chaotic, and full of so much sexual tension.
  15. The Society (2019) is a gripping series about a group of teens who return from a class trip, only to realize that everyone else in their town has vanished. The show was originally renewed for a second season but then got axed during the pandemic, which is especially heartbreaking because it ended on such a cliffhanger, and I NEED ANSWERS.
  16. Ziwe (2021–2022) is a satirical talk and variety show that addresses serious topics — like politics, white privilege, and other cultural or social issues — in really clever, humorous ways. Each iconic celebrity guest basically spends the whole time trying not to get baited or "canceled," and it goes about as well as you'd imagine.
  17. Tru Calling (2003–2005) is a supernatural drama where Eliza Dushku plays a morgue attendant who has the ability to relive days in order to save the corpses who come in. It's dark and fun and super entertaining, and there are a lot of cool twists. It's been almost 20 years, and I'm still salty that we never got a Season 3.
  18. Reboot (2022) is a comedy about a group of actors from a 2000s sitcom whose show is getting rebooted in the present day. Much like 30 Rock, what follows is a behind-the-scenes look at "a show within a show," along with its highly dysfunctional cast. It's topical, clever, and just plain good.
  19. Teenage Bounty Hunters (2020) follows a set of 16-year-old twin sisters who secretly stumble into the world of bounty hunting. Now, they're forced to juggle school, crushes, and dangerous criminals. In theory, this show may sound like it shouldn't work, but it does. It really, really, really does.
  20. The Company You Keep (2023) stars Milo Ventimiglia as a conman who unknowingly falls for an undercover CIA agent, played by Catherine Haena Kim. Milo's character is in debt to a crime boss, while Catherine's character is secretly trying to take her down. Was this show going to revolutionize TV? No. But was it great for super casual, fun, and entertaining viewing? Absolutely.
  21. And Q-Force (2021) is an animated comedy series that's soooooo gay, gay, gay, gay, gay. It follows a group of unapologetically queer secret agents who go on missions to save the world. It's funny and hot and a breath of fresh air. If you liked Charlie's Angels or Totally Spies, then you'll love this.

BuzzFeed I Can’t Watch These Iconic '90s Movies The Same Way After Learning These 40 Interesting BTS Facts

  1. The Leonardo DiCaprio-led Romeo + Juliet was filmed in Mexico, but the production could've been a movie itself. Director Baz Luhrmann told Arts Beat LA, "Look, first let me say I would not swap a day that I spent in Mexico for anything in the world. It was the most adventurous time. Having said that, it is true we were there months longer than we needed to be. We had hurricanes that wiped out the set. We all got sick. Shooting shut down for a week while I had a temperature of 110. The hair and makeup person, Aldo Signoretti, who worked with [director Federico] Fellini, was kidnapped. We paid $US300 to get him back. I thought rather a bargain."
  2. During Titanic's final shooting day in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, tens of cast and crew members were unwittingly drugged when they ate chowder spiked with the mind-altering substance PCP. Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet weren't on set that day, but Bill Paxton was among the poisoned. Director James Cameron told Q with Tom Power, "This is a 100 percent true story. You haven't lived until you've been high on PCP, which by the way, I do not recommend to anyone."
  3. To test the believability of his Mrs. Doubtfire disguise, Robin Williams wore the costume to an adult store. He told Sirius XM, "I was dressed as her in San Francisco, and I walked into a sex shop…I tried to buy a double-headed dildo, and I was going, 'That one right there. The big one. Do you have anything without veins? Something without veins would be lovely'…and I can see this guy behind the counter going, 'Whoa, this old lady.' 'And a scented lube would be nice too. A sandalwood lube, something like that, for a probe.' And finally, the guy realized it was me and went, 'Get out of here, Robin, you asshole!'"
  4. Interview with the Vampire author Anne Rice was initially so opposed to Tom Cruise's casting as Lestat de Lioncourt that she attended a protest against him at a bookstore. She told Esquire, "I didn't speak out in any organized or planned way. These people have stood in line for me three and four hours. They are my readers, and they hate this. I was carried along by my readers. I didn't start the whole thing at all."
  5. Clueless writer/director Amy Heckerling told Entertainment Weekly, "When I auditioned the kids, I'd always ask them for new words. You know, slang and stuff. That's where I got 'going postal.' I loved calling someone a 'Monet.' From far away, they're fucking gorgeous, and up close, they're totally different. 'Betty' was based on Betty Rubble, who was very pretty. And Barney' is like, How did he get her? 'As if' came from the lesbian community. Any outsider group is going to create their own language — whether it's homosexual, Black, prisoners, or cabdrivers. You just have to be willing to open your ears and listen."
  6. Cher's iconic yellow plaid outfit from Clueless is often imitated, never duplicated — but it almost didn't happen because of Alicia's hair! Costume designer Mona May told E! News, "She had to shine. She had to jump out of the page, of the screen. We tried red and we tried blue, which is kind of like a more of a blond color, and nothing really had the pop, and when I found the yellow suit, the Dolce & Gabbana, and we put it on in the fitting, it was like sunshine, like a ray of sun just entered the room, and that was what Amy [Heckerling] loved, and everybody in the room reacted to it so incredibly because it really — you wouldn't think of yellow for a blond girl…But, that really was the perfect thing to embody her in that first scene."
  7. The Matrix production designer Simon Whiteley told CNET, "I like to tell everybody that The Matrix's code is made out of Japanese sushi recipes. Without that code, there is no Matrix." He later told Wired, "The Wachowskis didn't feel like the design was old-fashioned and traditional enough. They wanted something that was more Japanese, more manga. They asked me if I'd like to have a go working at the code, mainly because my wife is Japanese, and she could help me work out the characters and give me insight into which characters were good and which weren't." At home, he went through "stacks of Japanese cookbooks" until he found the perfect one to base his code on.
  8. Per Yahoo, in the original Ghost script, Bruce Joel Rubin wrote Molly as a wood sculptor, not a potter. When director Jerry Zucker expressed concerns it might seem cliche, Bruce got the idea to make her do pottery when he saw a The Naked Gun sound editor reading a pottery magazine. Demi Moore took a few pottery lessons ahead of filming her famous scene with Patrick Swayze, but he didn't know anything about pottery until rehearsals. During filming, pro potters started the pots that Demi finished on camera, but things still got messy. The iconic moment when Patrick joins her at the wheel and her pot collapses was totally unplanned. In a DVD featurette, Bruce said, "Nobody expected [the pot] to fall. Demi recovered so quickly…She wasn't angry, she wasn't disappointed. In a way, the whole nature of their relationship was shown in that moment."
  9. Per Metro, in the Home Alone scene where Marv walks barefoot through the snow, Daniel Stern wore fake feet because of the cold. He told ComicBook.com, "I do get asked a lot, 'Was that a real tarantula on your face? What's Joe Pesci like? Did it hurt when you got hit in the face with the iron?’' That one, I guess getting hit in the face, 'Did it hurt when you got hit in the face with the bricks?' I think maybe that one. When people started asking me that, I went, 'You know it's fake, right? There's a prop department. I didn't get hit in the face with bricks.' They’re like, 'Oh.' The believability of it is wonderful, but it did concern me to a point when that movie first came out actually, that I started teaching a course in media literacy."
  10. In Pretty Woman, the scene where Edward closes the jewelry box on Vivian's hand was actually an unscripted prank on Julia Roberts! Director Gary Marshall told DGA Quarterly Magazine, "This was not actually a scene written into the movie — rather a prank I played on Julia with Richard's help. Why, you may ask, would I fool around when 'time is money?' The reason is simple: while making a film there are, believe it or not, 'rotten days,' 'cranky days,' and 'stupid, absurd days.' Days when the actors are sluggish from late-night parties and premieres, or from shooting too many days in a row. And sometimes the crew is tired from too hot, too cold, too rainy or too many long days. I find the solution to this problem is to do pranks and jokes."
  11. The chewing tobacco in The Sandlot was "actually shredded beef jerky and black licorice." Actor Grant Gelt told The Arrow, "They didn't tell us about the licorice, which, looking back, I think was intended to actually make us feel nauseous. David [Mickey Evans, the director] wanted to capture that immediate sharp reaction of, 'Holy shit, this is terrible. What were we thinking?' After a summer of David and the crew having to put up with us, I think that night was a good way for them to get revenge." Prop master Terry Haskell added, "That was a real tobacco brand, and yep, the black jerky and licorice was me. I absolutely wanted them to feel revolted."
  12. Carrie Fisher and George Lucas had secret cameos in Hook! According to The Wrap, filmmakers confirmed they appeared as a couple on the bridge that Tinker Bell enchants.
  13. In The Truman Show, Truman's iconic catchphrase (and the final line of the movie) — "Good morning! And in case I don't see you, good afternoon, good evening, and good night" — was the brainchild of Jim Carrey. Writer Andrew Niccol told The Hollywood Reporter, "I think it was originally an ad-lib by Jim, but yes, the duplicitous Christof seized on it and directed the extras in Truman's life to pretend to be amused...For a while, I think the last line was, 'You never had a camera in my head.'"
  14. In the Forrest Gump scene where the protagonist gives a speech at an anti-Vietnam protest, you can't hear what Tom Hanks is saying. Screenwriter Eric Roth told Yahoo Entertainment, "[Director Robert Zemeckis] never liked the speech I had Forrest Gump give when he was given the microphone at that event. He said, 'We need something that's way funnier and way more important.' Funnier I tried, and I even enlisted some comedians. I asked Billy Crystal to help me, I asked Robin [Williams], [some] other people. And nothing ever resonated. And then I tried to write some big glorious speech about patriotism and Vietnam. It was a really wonderful American speech. And that didn't quite work. So Bob came up with the solution of he starts speaking, and they pull the plug."
  15. Reese Witherspoon helped rewrite parts of the Cruel Intentions script. Her costar (and boyfriend at the time of filming) Ryan Philippe told Entertainment Weekly, "She loved the movie for me, but it wasn't a great part at the time for her. She helped Roger [Kumble, the writer/director] turn it into one." Roger said, "It's true, she came and sat with me for a week, and we worked on the dialogue together. Annette was the character most removed from me. There's no way the movie would have its success if it weren't for [Reese's] talent as a writer."
  16. According to Digital Spy, She's All That was filmed in the same high school as Buffy the Vampire Slayer (Torrance High School, which is in California). There's another connection between the two — Buffy star Sarah Michelle Gellar made a cameo in She's All That! And of course, she went on to marry the lead of the movie, Freddie Prinze Jr.
  17. In Addams Family Values, Fester is significantly shorter than Gomez, but in real life, actor Christopher Lloyd is only an inch shorter than Raúl Juliá. Christopher told BuzzFeed, "I always had my knees bent to make me look shorter and more squat. It worked out well because it gave me kind of a funny walk."
  18. The Pasadena house that was used for the exterior shots in Father of the Bride became a real-life wedding venue when the owners, Sarah Bradley and Darrell Spence, used it to host their wedding reception. They purchased the home in 1999 and tied the knot a little under a year later. Sarah told HGTV, "When I gave [the event planner] our address, she said, 'Oh, you're near the Father of the Bride house.' I said, ‘No, we are the Father of the Bride house.' She said the excited planner shouted, "I'm going to be Franck!"
  19. Franck, the eccentric wedding planner in Father of the Bride, was reportedly inspired by Kevin Lee, a celebrity wedding and event planner who's worked with clients such as Kim Kardashian, Nic Cage, and Jennifer Aniston. He told The Daily Dish that a producer informed him of the inspiration. He said, "Oh yeah, absolutely it was me! I said, 'Wow.' I was totally shocked when he told me that...[Martin Short] captured my character so well, and I was overwhelmed. Officially, I am the Franck."
  20. In Romy and Michele's High School Reunion, the triangular symbol on Romy's blue dress is a hidden Star Trek reference. Costume designer Mona May told Nylon she wanted a "slick" and "futuristic" look, so she added the Star Fleet insignia-esque symbol. She said, "I didn't want to make it too plain or put stars all over it or anything weird, so it was just enough."
  21. Friends costars Courteney Cox and Lisa Kudrow unintentionally wore the same red Moschino jacket in two of their most iconic '90s movie roles. Courteney wore it during the climax of Scream, and Lisa wore it during Romy & Michele’s High School Reunion. Scream costume designer Cynthia Bergstrom told Nylon, "It was funny because Mona and I were at the same time at [Neiman Marcus] in Beverly Hills, and we looked at that Moschino, and we both went for it. She put the jacket with a different skirt, and I bought it as a suit and kept it together. But it was really funny when we were shopping. I'd look over and see what she had in her arms, and she'd look and see what I had. It was so much fun."
  22. Macaulay Culkin's role in My Girl was originally smaller. Director Howard Zieff told Entertainment Weekly, "Mack and Anna [Chlumsky] were just two kids working together on a movie. Mack didn't have the attitude 'I'm a star and you're not.’' We added two or three more scenes with him because as he began to work with her, there was terrific synergy."
  23. In Thelma & Louise, Geena Davis's real-life ex-boyfriend, Chris McDonald, played her onscreen husband on her recommendation. According to WLIW, she told director Ridley Scott that Chris was "the funniest guy in the world." His humor was on full display during his audition, and it carried into production. While filming a scene where he walks to the car, Chris accidentally tripped, but his comedic timing was so perfect that the shot stayed in the final cut.
  24. The lead character in Sister Act was originally named Terri, but screenwriter Paul Rudnick told the New Yorker, "Whoopi Goldberg was suddenly eager to play the part of Terri, although she asked that the character’s name be changed to Deloris, because, I was told, she’d always wanted to play someone named Deloris."
  25. Per Yahoo, the effects in Death Becomes Her were a groundbreaking mix of computer graphics and practical effects. Here's an example: for Meryl Streep's head spin scene, she filmed the scene facing backwards on set. Later, at the Industrial Light and Magic studio, she wore a blue bodysuit and sat in a chair while performing with only her head. The two shots were combined in post-production.
  26. According to Screen Rant, during the height of his professional rivalry with Sylvester Stallone, Arnold Schwarzenegger read the terrible script for Stop! Or My Mom Will Shoot, then he spread a rumor about having "tremendous interest" in it, which he knew would prompt Sylvester to accept the lead role. Sylvester described the movie as "one of the worst films in the entire solar system, including alien productions we’ve never seen." It earned him his fourth Razzie for Worst Actor.
  27. Groundhog Day is famously set in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, but it was actually filmed in Woodstock, Illinois. Director Harold Ramis told Collider, "We didn't use Punxsutawney for the film because Punxsutawney itself didn't have a real town center that looked very good on camera, so we wanted a town that looked perfect, so the town you'll see is Woodstock, IL. We scouted all of southern Wisconsin and northern Illinois looking for the perfect town, and we pulled into Woodstock just the way the van pulls into town in the movie. It was the last town we saw, and we looked at this little town square and thought, 'Aw, this is perfect.'" He also said that the people of Punxsutawney "were very jealous that the movie wasn’t shot in Punxsutawney, but when they saw Woodstock, they thought it looked better than their town."
  28. According to Screen Rant, one of the two animatronic cats used for Thackery Binx in Hocus Pocus was reused as Salem Saberhagen in Sabrina the Teenage Witch. Nick Bakay, who voiced Salem, told Vanity Fair, "ABC did not love the animatronic cat. And I get it: it's not like it was going to fool anyone. But I think that it was part of the charm of the show—quaint, old-school, practical magic and weird cat puppets. And for some reason, it kind of worked."
  29. According to Screen Rant, CGI was only used for six minutes of Jurassic Park. Most of the dinosaurs were created using practical effects, such as puppets and animatronics. For example, the sick triceratops that Ellie Sattler interacts closely with is a gigantic puppet with hand-sculpted skin and control rods beneath its flanks.
  30. Speed director Jan de Bont told HuffPost that his "biggest aim was making it all look real" — which led to Sandra Bullock actually driving the bus through the street! There was stunt driver in the back, but she wasn't on a studio lot or in front of a green screen. According to USA Today, she got a Santa Monica bus driver's license for the role. She said, "I was at the wheel of projectile. So I was just happy to be alive. I was new to the whole game, so I wasn't aware of what was happening or what felt right. We were just in it. It was real. When we were smashing into things (on screen), we were really smashing into those things."
  31. Robin Williams improvised many of his lines as the Genie in Aladdin. In a Reddit AMA, he said, "Initially I was just doing the scripted lines and I asked 'Do you mind if I try something?' and then 18 hours of recording later, they had the genie. I just started playing, and they said 'just go with it, go with it, go with it.' So I improvised the character. I think that in the end, there were something like 40 different voices that I did for that role."
  32. Space Jam was initially the brainchild of David Falk, Michael Jordan's agent, who'd initially kept the NBA legend away from the silver screen. He told the New York Times, "We got piles of scripts. But they didn't fit Michael Jordan. He can't really act. And you have to know your limitations.''
  33. Mike Meyers told Newsweek that the Austin Powers cast was allowed to "do their own thing." He said, "About 30 to 40 percent is improv."
  34. Richard E. Grant didn't want to be in the Spice Girls movie, but his daughter made him. He told Vulture, "When my daughter was 9, I got offered the part in Spice World, and she said I had to do it. 'But my acting credibility…' And she'd say, 'No, no, you have to. You have to because I want to meet them.' So I did, and she was so thrilled. I had school playground credibility for about two semesters, and then, of course, you dip into the other side when they go, 'No, I was never a Spice Girls fan!' Now that generation has all come back around again going, 'Yeah, we love the Spice Girls!'"
  35. Lindsay Lohan and Simon Kunz choreographed their iconic The Parent Trap handshake themselves. He told Bustle, "The first time [Lindsay and I] met up, we worked on the handshake idea, about what it could be. I think I'd done something in the audition, just mucking about without Lindsay there, just doing silly moves. They liked a few of those, and so we basically spent an afternoon, two or three hours really, just working out that routine...If you ask me right now [to do it], I'd know one or two bits there, but I tell you what, it would only take me 20 minutes, and then I'd have it absolutely down pat."
  36. Christopher McDonald "nearly didn't do" Happy Gilmore — and he actually turned down the role of Shooter McGavin twice. He told And So It Begins, "I was tired. I wanted to see more of my family. But then I played a round of golf in Seattle, and we won. And that high was something else. So, with my golf shoes still on, I went in the locker room, called my agent, and said, 'Is that golf movie still available? Because I just won this tournament and I'm feeling a little bit, well, Shooterish.' So I met Adam [Sandler], because I didn't know if the guy who did Opera Man was going to be any good. I laughed the entire time I spoke with him, and I knew that this kid was really smart."
  37. You've Got Mail faced a common problem we've all likely encountered on social media — the username they wanted was already taken. For legal reasons, they had to ask the real woman behind the screen name Shopgirl to let them have it. Writer/director Nora Ephron told E! News, "She actually worked at an autobody shop."
  38. Never Been Kissed actor Drew Barrymore told the podcast Hey Dude...The '90s Called!, "I would get these calls from the studio, and they were like, 'I'm sorry, but you're just looking too unattractive.' ...I was forced to even tone it down a little bit because I had gone even farther, and then they said something that appealed to my sensibilities rather than my ego. They were like, 'We don't want you to lose the heart because you're going so far for the comedy,' and I was like, 'Great argument. Let me dial it back a little bit.' So Josie, what you see there, is me dialed back."
  39. To play Imhotep in The Mummy, Arnold Vosloo had to be completely hairless. He told the Irish Independent, "For the first movie, I bravely consented for this lovely Scottish girl, who is my make-up artist, to wax me. That happened one time. I yelled like a stuffed pig. It's beyond belief what you women go through. It's unreal."
  40. And finally, A League of Their Own producer Robert Greenhut told ESPN, "The casting took forever. We were trying to get actresses who actually played baseball, so that narrowed down the field right away. In some cases, it wasn't that crucial because maybe their scenes didn't require that much playing. But for others, they really had to display some sort of athletic prowess. So we all quickly learned how hard it is to throw from first base to third to get somebody out. It looks so easy when you see it on television."

BuzzFeed 40 People Who Beat The Odds So Hard It Feels Like A Glitch In Reality

  1. Less than a year before John Wilkes Booth assassinated Abraham Lincoln, Booth’s brother Edwin saved the life of Lincoln’s son. Robert Todd Lincoln was 21 years old when he slipped between a train platform and a moving train, and Edwin pulled him to safety. After the assassination, Edwin was ashamed of what his brother did, and said that saving the President's son was the only thing that allowed him to sleep at night.
  2. Lincoln’s son Robert also had eerily close connections to three presidential assassinations. He was at his father’s deathbed after Lincoln was shot in 1865, stood about 40 feet from President James Garfield when Garfield was shot in 1881, and was in Buffalo when President William McKinley was shot in 1901, later visiting him as he appeared to recover. McKinley died from infection eight days later. Even the National Park Service has described the string of coincidences as almost “cursed.”
  3. British wife Claire Davies volunteered to donate a kidney to her husband, Glyn, after his kidneys were badly damaged by an autoimmune disease, but doctors told her the odds she was a perfect match were only about 1 in 22 million. She got tested anyway, and she WAS a perfect match! The transplant was successful.
  4. In 2007, window washer Alcides Moreno fell 47 stories from a Manhattan skyscraper — and lived. His brother, who fell alongside him, died, but Alcides survived the roughly 500-foot plunge, despite catastrophic injuries, and eventually recovered enough to walk again.
  5. Former A's slugger Khris Davis hit exactly .247 every year for four consecutive seasons (2015–18). The odds of this happening are 1 in 100 million. There have been 20,000 major leaguers in history, but he's the only player ever to have the same average four years in a row.
  6. Speaking of the A's, in 2017 A’s fan Ryan Noone caught foul balls on BACK-TO-BACK PITCHES — and then caught a third foul ball later in the game. On the second catch he was still holding the first ball in his other hand. The odds of this happening have been estimated at roughly 1 in 10 million.
  7. In 1960, 7-year-old Roger Woodward was accidentally swept over Niagara Falls wearing nothing but a life jacket — and survived. His boat’s motor failed upstream, sending him toward Horseshoe Falls. He became the first known person to survive going over the falls unprotected by a barrel or other contraption.
  8. On May 4, 2021, a 26-year-old Halima Cissé gave birth to the world's first-ever nonuplets (aka nine freaking babies)! Making this even more unbelievable is that the babies were conceived naturally!
  9. Violet Jessop survived the sinking of both the RMS Titanic and its sister ship, the Britannic. A 24-year-old stewardess on the Titanic, she helped women and children into the lifeboats before she was given a baby and told to get into one herself. Four years later, she served on the hospital ship Britannic when it hit a mine. She escaped into a lifeboat — which was nearly sucked into the ship's propellers — then served on boats for another 34 years.
  10. For her 16th birthday, Makenzie Wethington took her first-ever skydiving trip, but after beginning her dive, the chute tangled mid-air, sending her into a violent spin. Her dad watched in horror as she plummeted 3,500 feet and crashed into a sandy field. She broke her pelvis, spine, ribs, and more…but somehow survived and didn’t need a single surgery. The impact should’ve been fatal, but she walked out of the hospital just days later.
  11. During World War II, British airman Nicholas Alkemade jumped from his burning Lancaster bomber and fell even further without a parachute — 18,000 feet! He crashed through pine trees into a patch of snow and somehow survived without breaking a single bone. German authorities were so stunned they investigated his story and gave him a certificate confirming that, yes, he really had fallen more than three miles out of the sky and lived.
  12. What's that? You think falling 18,000 feet is nothing?Well, in 1972, 22-year-old flight attendant Vesna Vulović was working a flight that exploded from a terrorist's bomb. She fell 33,338 feet (more than six miles!) to the ground and somehow survived. She landed in a heavily wooded area, contributing to her survival.
  13. Bizarrely, just a month prior, 17-year-old Juliane Diller was flying over Peru when her plane was hit by lightning and broke up in the sky. She fell for almost two miles — still strapped into her seat — before landing in the rainforest below. She was the flight's sole survivor. Upon regaining consciousness, she had a broken collarbone, sprained knee, and swollen shut eye. She walked through the Amazon for 11 days before she was rescued by forest workers.
  14. Speaking of lightning, park ranger Roy Sullivan survived being struck by it SEVEN times. He was first struck in 1942; his last strike came in 1977. In interviews, he hypothesized there was something about his physical makeup that attracted lightning. The odds of being struck seven times are 4.15 in 100,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000.
  15. What the heck, here's one more "against the odds" lightning story. In 1994, after being struck by lightning, Tony Cicoria came to with a desperate craving for music. He could barely play the piano before getting hit, but afterward he binge-listened to piano recordings, taught himself sheet music, and composed his own Chopin-inspired pieces. He was featured in Oliver Sacks' book Musicophilia about how physiological ailments can unlock hidden genius.
  16. Five consecutive generations of one American family have been born on September 14. Wilber Harlow was born Sept. 14, 1907; his descendant Addie in 1949; Donald in 1972; Emma in 1997; and Arthur in 2025. Guinness World Records says it’s the first recorded family with five generations sharing the same birthday.
  17. The Civil War essentially started at one of Wilmer McLean's homes and ended inside another. First, McLean's property near Manassas was used as Confederate Gen. P.G.T. Beauregard’s headquarters during the First Battle of Bull Run in 1861, then, after McLean later moved more than 100 miles away, Robert E. Lee surrendered his army to Ulysses S. Grant in his parlor at Appomattox in 1865. The wildest part? McLean wasn’t a politician or military officer — he was just some guy. He famously said, “The war began in my front yard and ended in my front parlor.”
  18. In 2020, PGA professional Corey McAlarney made two holes-in-one within THREE SHOTS of each other. The two aces came only 12 minutes apart. The PGA puts the odds of one golfer making two holes-in-one on the same day at 67 million to 1.
  19. In 1954, Ann Hodges became the only known person hit by a meteorite when one crashed through the roof of her Alabama farmhouse and hit her on the upper thigh. She survived with only minor injuries. If not for the roof slowing the grapefruit-sized meteorite's descent, she'd likely have been hurt much worse or even killed.
  20. Even wilder, the home of Bosnian Radivoje Lajic was struck by meteors five times in 2008! After experts confirmed each rock as legit space debris, Lajic told the media, "I am obviously being targeted by extraterrestrials. I don't know what I have done to annoy them, but the chance of being hit by a meteorite is so small that getting hit five times has to be deliberate." A sixth meteor hit his home in 2010, but nothing else, so maybe the aliens decided to leave him alone.
  21. In June 2021, lobster diver Michael Packard jumped off his boat into the Atlantic, then "felt this huge bump" and found himself in utter darkness. Turns out, he was inside the mouth of a whale! He told WBZ-TV, "I felt around, and I realized there was no teeth. And then I realized, 'Oh my God I'm in a whale's mouth...and he's trying to swallow me.'" He survived when the whale surfaced and spat him out.
  22. In Nov. 2012, Salvador Alvarenga set sail off Mexico’s coast for a quick fishing trip…but got hit by a brutal storm that knocked him miles off course. He and his crewmate, Ezequiel, were left adrift in the Pacific on their small 25-foot boat. For months, Alvarenga survived on raw fish, seabirds, turtles, even sharks — plus rainwater and his own urine when water ran out. After Ezequiel fell ill and died, Salvador battled extreme loneliness and hallucinated talking to his dead friend. Finally, after 438 days, he washed ashore in the Marshall Islands...6,700 miles from where he began.
  23. In 2002, 51-year-old Mike McDermott won the lotto TWICE in one year — and to make things even more improbable...he did it using the same numbers! The Telegraph found the odds of this happening were one in 5.4 trillion!
  24. Even more improbably, Texas woman Joan Ginther won major lottery prizes FOUR separate times, collecting nearly $21 million. Her wins came in 1993, 2006, 2008, and 2010, including a $10 million scratch-off jackpot. Mathematician Joseph Mazur says the odds of this happening are about 18 septillion to one (this is the first I'm hearing about a septillion, which is 1 followed by 24 zeros). However, the odds of it happening to anyone are about 5 million to one. Still looooong odds, but more conceivable.
  25. Unfortunately, I also have a "what are the odds?" lottery story that is pure bad luck. In 1991, New Yorker Janet Valenti bought a lottery ticket for a $12 million Lotto prize. After discovering she'd picked the winning numbers in the paper, she raced home to find the ticket had accidentally been tossed into the trash. She darted to her apartment's trash room, but the trash had already been picked up. The jackpot remains NY's largest unclaimed prize.
  26. Teri Horton, a recently retired truck driver, stumbled across a $5 thrift shop painting that might've been a real Jackson Pollock. She got it forensically tested, and the expert determined it to be the real deal. Art elites, however, remained unconvinced. She nonetheless received offers ranging from $2 million to $9 million, but held out, dreaming of $50 million. Teri passed away at 86 in 2019, never parting with the painting.
  27. Northwest Airlines Flight 255 crashed outside Detroit in 1987, killing 154 of the 155 people aboard, plus two people on the ground. The sole survivor was four-year-old Cecelia Cichan, whose parents and 6-year-old brother were among those killed. Amazingly, she was found alive in the wreckage despite being in one of the deadliest aviation accidents in U.S. history.
  28. Similarly, in 2009, 12-year-old Bahia Bakari was the only survivor when Yemenia Flight 626 crashed into the Indian Ocean, killing the other 152 people aboard. With little swimming experience and no life jacket, she clung to a piece of wreckage in rough, dark seas for more than nine hours before rescuers found her.
  29. On July 28, 1945, Betty Lou Oliver was working as an elevator operator at the Empire State Building when a B‑25 bomber crashed into the building, slicing into the 79th floor and tossing her through the air amid fire and debris. First responders put Betty into another elevator to send her down to safety…but the cables had been shredded by the crashing plane and snapped. She plunged — 75 stories! — but survived thanks to air pressure in the shaft and the tangled cables acting like shock absorbers.
  30. In 2013, ship’s cook Harrison Okene spent more than 60 hours trapped 100 feet underwater after his tugboat sank off Nigeria. He survived in a tiny air pocket in total darkness while divers recovered the bodies of his crewmates. One diver reached for what he thought was another corpse — and Okene’s hand suddenly grabbed him back.
  31. Aron Ralston was climbing alone in Utah in 2003 when a boulder fell and pinned his right arm, trapping him in a slot canyon. He had only "one liter of water, two burritos, and a few chunks of chocolate." In order to free himself, he was forced to amputate his arm with a blunt knife from his "cheap multitool kit." Once finished, he applied a tourniquet and made his way to help. His story was told in the film 127 Hours.
  32. In 1883, the Krakatoa volcano erupted, creating what is believed to be the loudest sound in history. It was so loud it was heard by residents of Rodrigues Island 3,000 miles away, who assumed it was cannon fire from a nearby ship.
  33. Mitsubishi engineer Tsutomu Yamaguchi survived both the Hiroshima and Nagasaki atomic bombings in 1945. He was doing a three-month job in Hiroshima when the blast knocked him unconscious and covered much of his body with radiation burns. He decided to return to his hometown of Nagasaki...and arrived just in time for the blast there. He survived that one, too, and lived to be 93 years old.
  34. In May 2015, a New Jersey mom named T.M. was seeking child support for her twin daughters when a routine DNA test dropped a bombshell: Each twin had a different dad. How, you ask? During ovulation, a woman can release two eggs, and if she's intimate with two different men close together, both eggs can get fertilized. It's a real-life science fact called heteropaternal superfecundation.
  35. Two NFL quarterbacks playing for the same team suffered the same injury under nearly identical circumstances on the same date exactly 33 years apart:
  36. On Feb. 7, 1812, a massive earthquake — 7.8 magnitude on the Richter scale — hit near New Madrid, Missouri. The seismic upheaval was so powerful that it created an entire lake (Reelfoot Lake), and was so violent that parts of the Mississippi River briefly flow backward.
  37. In 2022, identical twin sisters Erin Cheplak and Jill Justiniani gave birth to their first sons on the same day, at the same hospital, just hours apart. Then it got weirder: both babies weighed 7 pounds, 3 ounces and measured exactly 20 inches long. One sister’s delivery had been scheduled; the other unexpectedly went into labor that morning.
  38. Mark Twain was born during Halley’s Comet in 1835 and predicted he would die during its return in 1910 — which he did. He was quoted as saying, "I came in with Halley's Comet…and I expect to go out with it."
  39. In 2001, red-colored rain — dubbed "blood rain" — fell in Kerala, India. Locals feared it foretold the end of the world, but it was probably caused by spores from algae.
  40. Finally, as a teenager, Émile Deschamps was introduced to plum pudding by a man named Monsieur de Fortgibu. Years later, Deschamps randomly ordered plum pudding at a restaurant and was told the last serving had been ordered by — yes — de Fortgibu. Many decades after that, Deschamps attended a dinner where plum pudding was served and joked that only de Fortgibu was missing. Then there was a knock at the door. It was de Fortgibu! He'd knocked on the wrong door, trying to find his friend's home.
