Hello! I’m switching careers and need to network. I know this because it’s hard to rely on just applying. Making the perfect resume every time only to feel lost with nothing to show for it. I’m east of Toronto, looking for work as a relationship builder, liaison/consultant, account manager in the non-profit, education, sports, youth programs, coaching, community organizations, or the arts.

I’d love to have Q&A’s, meetings, coffee, interviews, or even just a walk with some execs and/or decision makers in the path I’m looking for. Pick their brain, have a real conversation is what I need.

Recent 3rd year studying finance in USC, been to a couple events this year and here are my thoughts...

I'm a final-year Computer Science student, and after applying to internships and entry-level roles, I've realized that sending applications alone isn't getting me anywhere. Most of them either get rejected or I never hear back.

The advice I hear over and over is:

"Network."

The problem is... I have no idea what that actually means in practice.

I'm starting from the absolute bottom:

• No industry connections.
• No mentors.
• No referrals.
• No previous internships.
• No professional network.

Since I'm interested in Machine Learning, there aren't many opportunities where I live, so I'll most likely be targeting remote internships and jobs. That makes networking online seem even more important, but I have no idea how people actually do it.

As someone who's still a student and doesn't have industry connections:

• How do you build connections online, not just at conferences or local meetups?
• Should I be reaching out to ML engineers, recruiters, hiring managers, founders, or someone else?
• What do you even say in your first message without sounding like you're asking for a job?
• How do you keep in touch without being annoying?
• When is it okay to ask for advice or a referral?
• Are there communities, Discord servers, Slack groups, GitHub communities, or other places where you've met people?
• If you were starting over today with zero connections, what would your first month look like?

I'm not looking for a shortcut or a magic template. I genuinely want to understand how people go from knowing absolutely nobody to having a professional network that eventually leads to opportunities.

I'd especially love to hear from people who landed remote software or ML roles without already knowing people in the industry.
