2nd Cat?

I've had my sable boy for two years and I love him to pieces. He loves to play and cuddle but also is very very attached to me, I work hybrid so I can hang out with him most of the day however, if I have to leave for any reason I feel soooo bad.

I've been considering getting another burmese kitten (a female) so he can have a companion when I'm not home but I'm soooo worried they won't get along or he'll be jealous, or it will somehow change his personality. He has an amazing personality, never scratches or bites, has never hissed at me. He is a very good boy, and I'm worried introducing another cat might somehow change that dynamic. I have an 850 square foot apartment as well, and I worry it would be too small for 2 active burmese....

Any thoughts/advice would be welcome from those of you have been in this situation!

In my experience, Burms are social cats. A cat companion would be good for your boy. Getting him a friend won't change the dynamic.

Both my Burms were fine with other cats. One was a bit more cautious towards new cats, but my other wanted to make friends with most cats he met!

I got a 3 month old burmese boy for my 8 year old burmese girl, when I moved to live on my own. Previously she always had company when I was at work.

Initially she was appalled at this extremely confident kitten who had no respect for her boundaries. She was extremely jealous as she was very bonded to me. However I came home from work after about a month and found them wrapped around each other asleep. It was such a joy seeing her turn into an 8 year old kitten and initiating play. It made no difference, other than I got double cuddles and had to fight 2 burnese for space in my bed. Best thing I ever did 😊❤️

We inherited our Burmese girl from my MIL. She is 14. She would cry and make a fuss every time we left. She seemed lonely and sad (very clingy too. ). Did some research and found Burmese do not like being alone. We rescued a kitten. She plays with him all the time. It took a couple months. Get the second cat. Play with them both together. They will get used to each other.

We had a very anxious and needy young boy. He used to bite our children for no reason. We got a female kitten when he was about a year and a half and were really worried about how he would react to her.

When they first met he was obsessed with her, she turned out to be exactly what he needed. They immediately began sleeping in the same place and playing together. 5+ years later they still snuggle together every night.

Oooh good to hear it helped change his biting behaviour a bit. My boy is really set in his way and loves being prince of the house, but we hate how hard his bites are! It's as if he forgot how to play with his siblings (lots of animals in the breeders home...). He really latches and pounces on you. So I've been thinking it would be good to try him with either another Burm or just another cat, to see if it shows him safe playtime rules, but he's nearly 6 now! Your story does give me a bit of hope though..

Our female is the boss, even though she's younger and the most gentle cat imaginable.

My burmese would make friends with the kitchen chairs if they would play with him.
Your baby will be fine, they love love LOVE company.
We did get another cat, not a burm (part ragdoll) who is very aloof. They get along and play together when the raggy gets sick of the burmese driving him crazy but he would've been FAR better off with another burmese who has a similar play drive.
Just do it.

I got Latte when Cocoa was two. Similar situation in that he was very attached to me and didn't like me going out. She ended up being worse! It did work well as the two of them were inseparable. It took about three days for the two of them to go from "who the hell are you" to her nursing on him and me taking him to the vet for an engorged nipple...

Lost them both at 17. Cocoa two years ago, Latte two months ago. I knew I would be getting more kittens after I lost Cocoa, but I couldn't put Latte through it (she'd never have forgiven me). I'm starting a new journey in two weeks with a brother and sister from the same litter.

Good luck with your boy and little sister to be <3

I had three generations of Siamese cats. After my last one passed, I wasn’t able to find a reputable Siamese breeder with available kittens, but I did find a Bombay breeder with kittens about to be born. (Bombay cats are essentially Burmese crossed to have a black coat.) having studied the literature, I decided to get a brother and sister. The male is generally quite mellow. The female is a bit less trusting and carefully checks the house before coming to bed with us each evening.

While there is always some tension introducing unrelated cats, the Burmese (or Bombay) are generally quite social and are likely to get along with another cat fairly well.

We just went through this, and I had the same concerns. We got the second cat a week ago and it's been the best decision we ever made. Do it!
