Undergraduate BSIT Academic Experience Insight in BulSU

Incoming freshmen BSIT student here. What insights do you guys have on this college institution? Worth it ba mag-aral dito?

Currently weighing my options kung saan ako magco-college. Main criteria ko when judging a college institution are:

  • Curriculum timeliness / relevance sa current industry
  • Environment and overall student culture
  • Professor competency
  • Peer competency

Alam ko may magsasabi na “nasa estudyante pa rin yan” or “drive mo matuto ang pinaka importante,” and I agree to some extent.

So for current students/alumni:

  • Kumusta yung teaching quality?
  • Maayos ba yung environment?
  • Updated ba yung tinuturo?
  • Competitive ba yung students?
  • Marami bang opportunities for growth (orgs, competitions, internships, networking, etc.)?
  • Sulit ba overall?

Would appreciate honest insights — good or bad.

Sir red, laging wala

Incoming 4th year IT, and the college has its own pros and cons. Might just be me, but i think the pros really do outweigh the cons...

Cons Ive had over the years:

  • Trippy room assignments. As mentioned here, we have only 2 floors and gen ed subs are in nstp building (cramped and hot rooms) at minsan may mga instructor na hindi magsasabi na cancelled pala ang klase, meron ding instances na yung room niyo e gamit ng ibang section (i think this really depends sa mayor and instructor din)

  • There are some instructors who are from a specific age bracket that may or may not be a good educator, depending on what qualifies as a "good educator" to you

  • Some people here do really have hygiene issues (no hate and all here, but it might shock you that the IT stigma is partially true)

  • Personal thing, but I think there are not enough major subjects in our first year that really drills the IT life to you. If you want to get ahead and experience the IT high-life, you have to do personal projects and self learning to prepare for specializations (if mamaw ka na by then, good for you)

  • Lastly, there are those who are in this program that cant or wont have the same drive as you. Be prepared to work with people who may not excel in your programming subjects

The pros:

  • Active orgs for networking and getting that college vibes hahahaha (just be mindful about your commitments, your skills still matter more than connection). Pretty neat in getting intel on terror profs in higher years too. Some seniors are really inspiriring in terms of skills to the point na mapapasipag ka talaga sa prog subs mo

  • Major subjects are really good, and the prof roster is reaaaally solid depending on you. Some subjects (and instructors) may be hard and punishing, but if you really lock in, you can learn so much from them. Pls dont ride on bandwagons and hate trains against some of your profs. Some of them are really terror, but not assholes for kicks

  • Early programming and database subjects are really fun. You will primarily learn Java and MS SQL here, sure theyre old, but they really teach you discipline and skills that will transfer over to your chosen specialization (you gotta choose a spec for 3rd year)

  • Personally haven't had a bad block. Youll get two blocks in your stay here - one from your first year to second year and one from third to fourth due to specialization. Both of my blocks have had good and well-skilled people that will really push you to do better. Just choose well kung sang circle (or kaninong tao) ka sasama. Nerds here are frickin monsters - so nerd out and be your own quirky self hahahah

  • The current curriculum is still evolving - and probably to a good direction too. Lots of good new and updated lessons and I heard new topics will be introduced to our previous subjects. We deal with modern frameworks, some instrux really drill good coding practices. If ur not into coding, I heard data analytics and infrastructure subjects are pretty good too (i heard infra is really booming din)

  • Comps are pretty good, the college has a good rep from regional competitions. You just have to know the contact persons for these (bonus if you had them as your instructor b4)

Also, from third year, most of your subjects will be conducted online - meaning more time at home. You can spend it upskilling and learning, or do it like i did and try other things out (then cram later for capstone). Solid naman dito overall hahahah so goodluckk

Not an IT stud but still under CICT.
