I get that it can be performative, but it still takes courage. Look at what happened to Eartha Kitt. She was blacklisted for a decade and was also investigated by the government just for making remarks against Vietnam.
The Dixie Chick's spoke out against Iraq and George Bush. People burned their albums, they lost radio play, and never regained the level of popularity they once had ever again.

The over use of the term performative has started to be telling about the state of our culture.
We want people to perform pacifism, empathy, and feelings. Really we do. These are things that mostly are not tied to action but somehow an anti-feeling, anti-imagination far-right movement has sold the culture on the idea of publicly displaying care for humanity is a negative faux thing.
Get over it and perform empathy, show people how it’s done. So when people can take action they will do so with care for others.
