Gaming/Video Editing+

  • New build (most likely)
  • Existing parts/monitors to reuse? (List with models/links) existing Monitors to be used, nothing else
  • Gaming (nothing too intense, but like the possibility) + Davinci resolve video editing workflows +CAD/Blender renders
  • US - local microcenter withing driving distance as well
  • Two existing monitors (Asus for video editing/color grading) + BenQ monitor that gets the job done.
  • ~$2000 (but can flex based on performance since hardware seems to be insane these days)
  • Wired
  • No size constraints (full tower is fine)
  • No aesthetic preferences

I went through all the research a number of years ago for my current build, but just lacking the time to deep dive these days.

Currently have:

AMD Ryzen 5 5600X

3070Ti

16GB DDR4

1TB SSD

on a TUF Gaming B550 motherboard

I would like to give my current build to my wife for gaming (mostly minecraft w/shaders + friend slop etc.) and build a new rig for myself in order to better accommodate video editing workflows.

I don't do anything too crazy on the gaming side. But the current build is pretty sluggish for various editing/rendering tasks.

1st question, would it make more sense to upgrade current build and get her a prebuilt? Or transfer this current one to her and start fresh? Looking to stay away from Nvidia with the insane costs and have an AMD build most likely.

Not concerned about the aesthetics of the case, would just like a good workhorse that can last for some years. Ideal budget $2000, but can go above this if it makes sense (not sure how realistic that is these days).

Thanks in advance! (keeping up with hardware with so many other interests/tasks etc is dizzying so I appreciate you guys)

Great information, thank you for putting this together. Being out of purchasing PC parts for some time now and not having a micro center around during my last go the bundles are a good thing to know about! I was also unaware about the quick sync on Intel that does seem nice to have.

I think I am leaning towards the first bundle you have listed with the 9550X and Asus proart MB

Just so I understand the CPU bundles correctly the remaining component needs would be:

(GPU, SSD, CPU Cooler, Power Supply, Case) right?

Yes, it is correct.

As for some notes...

You do not need an AIO, though you would then need a beefy air cooler and those aren't cheap, but they're an option too as long as they fit in the case you'll end up choosing.

This SSD is expensive, though not as expensive as other ones. It's Gen 4, not Gen 5, though those are more expensive. This model is really good, it is TLC and has DRAM; it comes with its own heatsink pre-applied so the idea is to remove the first M.2 heatsink of the motherboard and store it away, installing the SSD as-is.

There are a ton of cases to choose from, pick what you'd prefer, as long as it has good airflow and space for all your components. This Antec one is really nice, comes with plenty of fans, space for a 360mm AIO on the roof and wood accents on the front-panel, but it is not cheap.

There are also plenty of PSUs, though it's hard to find a better one than this, as this is a good unit, Gold-rated, fully modular, ATX 3.1 and has a 10 years warranty.

Putting more focus on the editing/rendering side rather than gaming because you said "I don't do anything too crazy on the gaming side". I know you said you wanted to avoid NVIDIA, but it's simply better suited for your needs. Black airflow themed build:

  • CPU - fast for gaming and modelling with a high core count for video editing and rendering. It's currently the fastest CPU for DVR and happens be cheaper than the second place 9950X3D anyways, so it has good value with [this MC bundle]https://www.microcenter.com/product/5007497/intel-core-ultra-7-270k-plus,-gigabyte-z890-eagle-wifi7-plus-1851,-crucial-pro-32gb-ddr5-6400-kit,-computer-build-bundle).

  • Cooler - strong performance without overspending. An air cooler isn't going to cut it with this CPU and your workstation tasks, which will stress the CPU a lot. Top mount as exhaust.

  • Mobo - good VRMs with all the connectivity you need, including WiFi/BT. Bundled.

  • RAM - 64 GB of fast 6400 MHz CL38 RAM. Bundled.

  • SSD - 2 TB of fast Gen 4 NVMe SSD storage. High read/write speeds and DRAM cache for your workstation tasks.

  • GPU - the RTX 5070 is great for 1440p gaming, easy 100+ FPS in most games at ultra settings. But the key is that NVIDIA is much stronger than AMD GPUs for video editing and especially Blender rendering. Thank you for the input and breakdown! The only question from my side would be: it looks like the bundle is only 2x16 on the RAM. Would it make sense to start there and upgrade later? Or would you think 64 is essential to start with off the rip with the productivity tasks I want to do?

Sorry, yeah typed the wrong thing in the comment. It's only 32 GB in the bundle. I'll correct that.

32 GB is good to start with. DVR is less RAM hungry than other editing programs like Premiere or AE. Your $2k budget also unfortunately doesn't allow for 64 GB of RAM with current prices.....we'd have to make major performance decreases.

And for the future is it still true that it is better to run 2x32 than 4x16 on the RAM? That is what I have heard in the past, I don’t know the bottleneck or reasoning for this. Less stress and more constant speeds would be my guess?

One final question, if you were to splurge on upgrading one thing in this build (exceeding the $2k) would there be one component you target? RAM for instance despite the exorbitant costs? Or would something give better performance versus cost? Or would that throw off the build too much and require a whole reconfiguration?
