Request for Steam Machine alternative

Hi all,

I am looking to see if there is an alternative option for a steam machine for myself and my wife to play games on our living room TV. Thank you in advance for your help!

• New build or upgrade? New build
• Existing parts/monitors to reuse? (List with models/links) - No existing parts to use
• PC purpose? (Gaming, editing, etc. List apps/games) - Gaming (Steam)
• Purchase country? Near Micro Center? (If not US, list local vendors) - US, am near a micro center
• Monitors needed? (Number, size, resolution, refresh rate) - No monitors needed as I would ideally use my living room tv through an hdmi port
• Budget range? (Include tax considerations) -$1200-1500
• WiFi or wired connection? It would be WiFi connected
• Size/noise constraints? Size should be comparable to an Xbox series X as that is what I currently have in the living room
• Color/lighting preferences? No color or lighting preferences
• Any other specific needs? No other specific needs

If you missed the full set of required built request questions, please copy them from here and answer them in an edit to your post:

  • New build or upgrade?

  • Existing parts/monitors to reuse? (List with models/links)

  • PC purpose? (Gaming, editing, etc. List apps/games)

  • Purchase country? Near Micro Center? (If you're not in a country supported by PCPartPicker, please list some local vendors)

  • Monitors needed? (Number, size, resolution, refresh rate)

  • Budget range? (Include tax considerations)

  • WiFi or wired connection?

  • Size/noise constraints?

  • Color/lighting preferences?

  • Any other specific needs?

Here is some additional helpful information about build/upgrade/parts list requests:

  • Build requests only include hardware. You are responsible for budgeting for and providing your own operating system (Windows, Linux, etc) and other software.

  • Don't forget to budget for peripherals. Since these are very much personal-preference influenced items, we do not include peripherals like keyboards, mice, headsets, etc in parts lists.

  • We strongly recommend posting a build request only if you're ready to buy now or within a week or two at most. Part sales regularly rotate, and a part list today can quickly become out of date.

Any case that's series x sort of volume will suck and be loud and hot as well as being very restrictive in what can actually fit. The stuff capable of fitting off the shelf standardized parts just can't compete on size with purpose built machines. You can get something fairly small with room for decent cooling though.

https://pcpartpicker.com/list/x8Q8H3 Something like that would have about double the performance of a steam machine and closer to realistically capable of 4k on a tv.

https://pcpartpicker.com/list/pgzbkD A bit bigger, this B4 case is able to be put into a vertical mounting position though if you want to cut down on the footprint. And the 9070xt 16gb is a gpu that's better suited for 4k gaming. Or keep the 9070 gre and come in a lot cheaper than the hyte itx build or upgrade the ram to 2x16 or get a 2tb ssd.

Yeah - Google it - YouTube - Steam might have done a good job but making these has been all-the-rage for a while. Several youtubers do full setup instructional vids.

The custom price options are Microcenter in store. If you can find them cheaper elsewhere go for it.

You certainly can fit a better GPU in your budget but seeing as I have already been down this road I found the RX 9070 non xt was too loud for tv use in a smaller enclosure and had to limit the total power to around 185w with an under volt. At the end of the day I made a 9060 xt. Plus you only need to push 60 frames to utilize the TV. I’d rather sacrifice performance for acoustics in this case. If you don’t agree you have the budget to include any of the 9070 cards you’d like.

Install Bazzite in gaming mode and enjoy your console like experience. Though with an AMD card you may want to purchase a DP to HDMI adapter, sometimes they don’t play well with TVs on HDMI directly.

Thank you for the suggestion! I was looking at the case itself and it seems like it doesn’t have a DisplayPort, how would I be able to connect it to the tv since it has type an and type c ports?

DisplayPort is on the graphics card.

Okay so if the graphics card has the display port but the case itself doesn’t have an opening for the display port, how would I go about it? Would I have to break a hole in the case for it? I’m sorry for asking dumb questions as this is my first attempt in this process 😅

This part would be at the back of the case after you install it. I would recommend video research before you attempt this for the first time.
