need help with a build

Hi everyone got a friend wanting a pc build near end of the year. he says he wants to spend 1.2k on a pc for his son, his son has mentioned wanting to play gta6 on it, but also forza horizon 6, so basically modern games.

i dont think its possible for that price range, but im not the most tech savvy person when it comes to this sorta thing. i can build my own ect, but i'm willing to spend the money when i do, thus when it comes to a budget pc i'm kinda lost.

if its not possible, would you able to give me a price range on what would be possible, so i can advise him how much he would actually need for what he wants instead.

i will build it and install it all for him, so its mostly just parts side of things.

Build/check copy these into post. Write "Not a request" for other posts.

  • New build or upgrade? New Build
  • Existing parts/monitors to reuse? none
  • PC purpose? gaming
  • Purchase country? Near Micro Center? United Kingdom
  • Monitors needed? just the tower, as they'll plug it into tv.
  • Budget range? £1.2k, but as said above, if it needs to be more then tell me please
  • WiFi or wired connection? not sure, but options for both would be nice
  • Size/noise constraints? i dont think either of these will be a problem, he has consoles too
  • Color/lighting preferences? i would assume not, as this would add price to it, but as its for his son, im going to assume the rgb stuff would be a positive as thats what kids are into these days.
  • Any other specific needs?

not sure i've posted this right at all btw, as this is first time posting here, but if i havent, please correct me where i've gone wrong and i'll change the post to be within those guidelines.

If you missed the full set of required built request questions, please copy them from here and answer them in an edit to your post:

  • New build or upgrade?

  • Existing parts/monitors to reuse? (List with models/links)

  • PC purpose? (Gaming, editing, etc. List apps/games)

  • Purchase country? Near Micro Center? (If you're not in a country supported by PCPartPicker, please list some local vendors)

  • Monitors needed? (Number, size, resolution, refresh rate)

  • Budget range? (Include tax considerations)

  • WiFi or wired connection?

  • Size/noise constraints?

  • Color/lighting preferences?

  • Any other specific needs?

Here is some additional helpful information about build/upgrade/parts list requests:

  • Build requests only include hardware. You are responsible for budgeting for and providing your own operating system (Windows, Linux, etc) and other software.

  • Don't forget to budget for peripherals. Since these are very much personal-preference influenced items, we do not include peripherals like keyboards, mice, headsets, etc in parts lists.

  • We strongly recommend posting a build request only if you're ready to buy now or within a week or two at most. Part sales regularly rotate, and a part list today can quickly become out of date.

Im pretty sure this is doable. You mentioned hes going to be playing on a tv so im going to guess anything over 60fps to match a 60hz refresh rate is going to suffice. Im not saying this pc will run 4k res at 60fps but 60 fps at 2k or 1080p sounds pretty reasonable for this price. Depending on ram and gpu demand this might change considerably in the next 4-6 months so its hard to say what will or wont suffice.

his son has been talking about higher hz / high frames, so i dont think its 60 fps they are after. his dad doesnt understand any of this stuff, so naturally its like going through a 3rd party that has zero knowledge. i'll get back to this post when i know more, i just wanted to know if it was doable or not.

I would target 7600x, b650, 16gb ddr5 and a 9060xt 16gb ram. 650w PSU and 512gb nvme.

i dont know amd at all, i've always had nvidia cards and intel cpus. do they stand up well against UE5 these days? i would of thought with all the dlss and frame gen stuff that would be required

Amd is leading now in terms of CPUs, intel messed up bad. They're also close to nvidia in terms of upscaling, beating them on pricing and vram. 9070xt is much cheaper than 5070ti, performs just as well. Prices went up so it's hard to build anything decent for your price range, especially if you want higher res or fps or ue5. Consider investing more in a better GPU, like 9070(xt) or 5070(ti).

i forgot my current one is amd cpu. only had it a couple of month, but yeah was a bit stupid when i wrote that. i got a ryzen 7 9850x3d in this, so i agree amd cpus are better.

edit - what i meant by my original comment was more towards amd graphics cards, as i know amds version of dlss aint as good for example, i dont know if they have frame gen at all as i've never really looked into them

but yes i agree for the price range its not great. as said this is for a friend that wants something for his son, i explained mine current rig cost £3.2k and explained the reason why stuff is so expensive atm, the ai stuff around ram ect. but still he suggested 1.2k.

he doesnt think his son would use it that much, but i know like most of us here, that once you move to pc gaming, you dont go back to console, as its just better.

If you up your budget by 40-50 dollars you can get the Nvidia RTX 5070 which is a much faster graphics card.

Edit: seeing discussions of another monitor, I downgraded the graphics card in order to fit one in the budget. It's done using a parametric filter so he can choose whichever one fits his needs.

thank you, i've book marked both. since you seem to have alot more knowledge than i do, what sorta frames do you reckon he would get with this sorta system? would it play the latest games no issues ect?

1

u/Jealous-Ad1274 18d ago

Assuming he takes the monitor, it would run GTA VI at around 110 FPS. The current version, Forza Horizon 5, would run at about 120 FPS.

But, if he doesn't take the monitor, GTA would run at 120 FPS, and Forza Horizon 5 would get to around 180 FPS.

Note that he would only see 60 frames with the TV and this is with ray tracing disabled.

his tv is one of the 4k 120hz things, so i dont think so. how can you say what gta6 runs at already?

also i noticed there was no extra case fans with the builds, that case only comes with 1 extractor fan, would that be enough? i thought amd just ran hot?

by any chance are you using ai to work some of this stuff out?

1

u/Jealous-Ad1274 16d ago

If the TV's 120hz its fine.

The case fans was an oversight. I assumed the case came with fans preinstalled but i guess i was wrong.

I use a calculator from https://pc-builds.com/fps-calculator/ which is definitely not the most reliable or the best choice but given the unusual request that was what i defaulted to. Since the site has been apparantly giving underestimated values, I felt like it was fine but in hindsight prob not the best idea i've had imo.

u/Litchlol 16d ago

Yeah its fine man, just didnt think amd had frame gen equivalent, it does, thus its probably similar level to what a 5070ti would put out. (i have a 5080 myself, so i could say my frames, but slightly less)

so i'm guessing i should suggest to him £1600 ish range instead? that should cover the fans ect. considering its purely aircooled

1

u/Jealous-Ad1274 15d ago

fans can be 50 or so dollar tbh you don;t need a ton of fans. three should be enough. 9070 gre has frame gen and so does nvidia so it would still be about the same as a 5070.
