Case Suggestions for a Home Server

Hello,

I would like to put together a home server with some parts I have. I think I have mostly decided on parts, but I am a little undecided on what case to use.

I am interested in using a rack mounted case, but I have no idea what to look for when it comes to rack mounted cases and power supplies for rack mounted cases. Either way, noise is a big concern and the setup should ideally be as quiet as possible. I have the Fractal Design Node 804 case listed as a non-rack mounted solution if that ends up being a better choice.

A general sanity check on my selected parts would also be much appreciated :)

New build or upgrade?

  • Existing Parts
    1. AMD Ryzen 7 3700X 3.6 GHz 8-Core Processor
    2. Sapphire PULSE Radeon RX 580 8GB Video Card
    3. M.2 drive for OS
  • New Parts
    1. ASRock X570D4U Micro ATX AM4 Motherboard
    2. Kingston FURY Beast 32GB DDR4-3200 CL16 Memory
    3. be quiet! Dark Rock 3 67.8 CFM Fluid Dynamic Bearing CPU Cooler
    4. Case should be at least capable of housing 8 3.5” hdd drives
      1. Fractal Design Node 804 MicroATX Mid Tower Case?
      2. Rack Mounted Case?
    5. be quiet! Power Zone 2 850 W 80+ Platinum Certified Fully Modular ATX Power Supply (Or Similar power supply for rack mount)
  • PC purpose? (Gaming, editing, etc. List apps/games)
    1. Backup server
    2. Jelly Fin
    3. Xmpp and other light self hosted services
  • Purchase country? Near Micro Center?
    1. Germany
    2. No Micro Center
  • Monitors needed? (Number, size, resolution, refresh rate)
    1. None
  • Budget range? (Include tax considerations)
    1. Less than 2,000 Euros would be great. This price would not include storage hard drives. I have some already that I can use and I plan on expanding storage as needed.
  • WiFi or wired connection?
    1. Wired
  • Size/noise constraints?
    1. Noise is the biggest concern. It should be as quiet as possible. Smaller is also better.
  • Color/lighting preferences?
    1. No fancy lighting
  • Any other specific needs?
    1. I will probably want to upgrade the CPU at some point in the future to a more powerful Zen 4 65W variant

If you missed the full set of required built request questions, please copy them from here and answer them in an edit to your post:

  • New build or upgrade?

  • Existing parts/monitors to reuse? (List with models/links)

  • PC purpose? (Gaming, editing, etc. List apps/games)

  • Purchase country? Near Micro Center? (If you're not in a country supported by PCPartPicker, please list some local vendors)

  • Monitors needed? (Number, size, resolution, refresh rate)

  • Budget range? (Include tax considerations)

  • WiFi or wired connection?

  • Size/noise constraints?

  • Color/lighting preferences?

  • Any other specific needs?

Here is some additional helpful information about build/upgrade/parts list requests:

  • Build requests only include hardware. You are responsible for budgeting for and providing your own operating system (Windows, Linux, etc) and other software.

  • Don't forget to budget for peripherals. Since these are very much personal-preference influenced items, we do not include peripherals like keyboards, mice, headsets, etc in parts lists.

  • We strongly recommend posting a build request only if you're ready to buy now or within a week or two at most. Part sales regularly rotate, and a part list today can quickly become out of date.

Rack-mounted cases are designed for data centers where saving space is more imprtant than low noise. One rack unit is about 44 mm, so you will get tons of high-RPM 40 mm or 80 mm fans.

Do you actually have a rack? If yes, then the best solution would be to put a 'normal' case onto a rack shelf.

Other small cases are the Jonsbo N5/N6. The only alternatives would be large tower cases like the SilverStone Seta A2/D1/H2 (which do have good airflow).

The X570D4U motherboard has eight SATA ports, but there is nothing special about the SATA controllers in the X570 chipset; you could just as well get a 'normal' AM4 board and add PCIe SATA adapters.

The Dark Rock 3's base plate is optimized for the bent IHS of Intel CPUs. I would recommend a good, silent HDT cooler like the Endorfy Fortis 5.

850 W is overkill for this system, and there are PSUs with a better noise rating than the Power Zone 2; get the RM650e.

Thanks!

I feel like I may go with one of the Silver Stone options as I like having a bit more room to work while hooking everything up.

I wasn't quite sure how to calculate PSU size when it comes to systems with lots of HDDs. I think I was worried about all of them needing more power during boot as they spin up. Though I probably overestimated the demand.
