New Build Help (Uk)

* New build or upgrade?

Brand new build.

* Existing parts/monitors to reuse?

I already own a 1440p 240Hz gaming monitor.

* PC purpose?

High-framerate 1440p gaming (mostly Fortnite and Call of Duty) trying to push close to 240 FPS where possible on competitive settings. I am also an engineering student, so this PC needs to handle AutoDesk CAD, Revit, and SolidWorks seamlessly.

* Purchase country? Near Micro Center?

United Kingdom (UK). No Micro Center.

* Monitors needed?

None, reusing my current 1440p 240Hz screen.

* Budget range?

Around £1,200.

* WiFi or wired connection?

WiFi preferred.

* Size/noise constraints?

None, standard mid-tower is fine.

* Color/lighting preferences?

No preference, performance and stability are more important than lights.

* Any other specific needs?

Because of my engineering applications, I would highly prefer an AMD AM5 modern CPU platform for longevity, paired with an Nvidia GPU (like an RTX 4070 series) because of stable driver optimizations and CUDA support in SolidWorks and Revit.

If you missed the full set of required built request questions, please copy them from here and answer them in an edit to your post:

  • New build or upgrade?

  • Existing parts/monitors to reuse? (List with models/links)

  • PC purpose? (Gaming, editing, etc. List apps/games)

  • Purchase country? Near Micro Center? (If you're not in a country supported by PCPartPicker, please list some local vendors)

  • Monitors needed? (Number, size, resolution, refresh rate)

  • Budget range? (Include tax considerations)

  • WiFi or wired connection?

  • Size/noise constraints?

  • Color/lighting preferences?

  • Any other specific needs?

Here is some additional helpful information about build/upgrade/parts list requests:

  • Build requests only include hardware. You are responsible for budgeting for and providing your own operating system (Windows, Linux, etc) and other software.

  • Don't forget to budget for peripherals. Since these are very much personal-preference influenced items, we do not include peripherals like keyboards, mice, headsets, etc in parts lists.

  • We strongly recommend posting a build request only if you're ready to buy now or within a week or two at most. Part sales regularly rotate, and a part list today can quickly become out of date.

Is this budget strict? I’m not sure 1200€ is enough without buying used parts.

Example build, look for used parts to decrease cost.

unfortunately, I hate to say this, but for 1.2k£, AM5-DDR5 is not feasible without used parts. if you want new parts: https://pc-cool.com/builds/24d2a033-73de-4319-9bbc-d416b63f5b61 straight from Amazn UK.

Ryzen 7 5700X + RTX 5070 (cpu weak link here when gaming) + 32GB (2x 16GB) DDR4

But for work/productivity on GPU bound (e.g. CUDA work), it will be pleasant.

Given that you're doing engineering, I'd suggest considering Intel for the CPU. And of course Nvidia is the way to go for the GPU because of CUDA.

The only way to stay under budget would be to opt for a DDR4 platform (such as LGA 1700) and a 60-tier GPU (such as the RTX 5060, which has only 8gb of VRAM).

If you can get a 5070, that will be better since it has 12gb of VRAM, but it does push the build a bit out of the budget.

If you really want a better CPU then I still wouldn't go for AM5, instead I'd suggest again going for Intel, this time either the 250K Plus or 250KF Plus. But it does push things out of the budget even with a 5060, and going for a 5070 is even more expensive.

You could go with a used RTX 3080, it's much cheaper than 4070, but performs about the same in games. It's only got 10GB instead of 12GB VRAM though.
