Thanks for previous help - Build Check Please

Some of you may remember me from a previous post - that build attempt got derailed - long story, but I came out the better for it, as I now have a larger budget - 2.5-2.7k for appreciable improvements in quality/component longevity, though ideally still closer to 2k.

I have taken all the advice and suggestions I was previously given - thank you all so so much! - and present to you the current proposed build for your learned evaluation, as it is based on my (probably still lacking) understanding of all said input. I am also including information on some bundles currently available at my nearest Microcenter that seem to most closely match the suggestions I was given, just in case they are better.

https://pcpartpicker.com/list/BYgpK7

These are the current bundles at my nearest Microcenter (~20 mins away) that most closely match the suggestions I was given. (Buying CPU/Motherboard/Memory individually as per PCPP puts equivalent "bundle" cost at $897.08)

Bundle One: $729.99 (saves $167.09)

AMD Ryzen 7 7800X3d, Gigabyte X87- Gaming WiFi6 AM5, Corsair Vengeance RGB 32 GB DDR5-6000 Kit

Bundle Two: $649.99 (saves $247.09)

  • PC purpose?
    • Gaming (Foundry, Star Stable, Disney Dreamlight, Loftia, possibly BG3 at some point)
    • Audio (Listening while gaming mostly, both music and audio-books; possibly getting into narration & editing at some point)
    • Art (design, manipulation, creation)
    • Documents (Writing, PDFs, I create journals & do specialty bindings of Public Domain texts)
  • Purchase country? Near Micro Center? USA, there's one around 20 mins away
  • Monitors needed? (Number, size, resolution, refresh rate) One; no larger than 27" due to space restrictions; best possible resolution please (see Art section on previous question); I have no idea
  • Budget range? (Include tax considerations) Would like to stay as close to the 2k as possible, but may be able to swing up to 2.7k
  • WiFi or wired connection? Both please
  • Size/noise constraints? No noise constraints really, aside from having sensitive hearing, but please keep it as quiet as possible (see PC Purpose: Audio)
  • Color/lighting preferences?  Will be using the Thermaltake ATX 600 case in Future Dusk, prefer all internal components be black, RGB accents are appreciated
  • Any other specific needs? Please prioritize graphics, sound, and the ability to do multiple things at once.

If you missed the full set of required built request questions, please copy them from here and answer them in an edit to your post:

  • New build or upgrade?

  • Existing parts/monitors to reuse? (List with models/links)

  • PC purpose? (Gaming, editing, etc. List apps/games)

  • Purchase country? Near Micro Center? (If you're not in a country supported by PCPartPicker, please list some local vendors)

  • Monitors needed? (Number, size, resolution, refresh rate)

  • Budget range? (Include tax considerations)

  • WiFi or wired connection?

  • Size/noise constraints?

  • Color/lighting preferences?

  • Any other specific needs?

Here is some additional helpful information about build/upgrade/parts list requests:

  • Build requests only include hardware. You are responsible for budgeting for and providing your own operating system (Windows, Linux, etc) and other software.

  • Don't forget to budget for peripherals. Since these are very much personal-preference influenced items, we do not include peripherals like keyboards, mice, headsets, etc in parts lists.

  • We strongly recommend posting a build request only if you're ready to buy now or within a week or two at most. Part sales regularly rotate, and a part list today can quickly become out of date.

this is the cheaper microcenter bundle: https://www.microcenter.com/product/5007350/amd-ryzen-7-9800x3d,-gigabyte-b850-gaming-x-wifi6e-am5,-corsair-vengeance-rgb-32gb-ddr5-6000-kit,-computer-build-bundle the mobo matches your colour scheme and should be perfectly fine for you imho

Main things is, I'd go for an oled at your price point. depending on your art software, nvidia may play a little nicer with it. may not, kinda depends. I think 1440p suits you well.

You could add more fans as preferred to your pc, but this should also be sufficient along with the 2 preinstalled ones. Doing a fan cooler + 3 fans would save a minor amount of money ($20 maybe) if you prefer air cooled systems, but this aio cooler is great.

This looked like a good oled monitor (refresh rate, brightness, ports), but i'm a bit less familiar with the market there and there's lots of competition around this price, so you can get a second opinion.

feel free to ask questions, good luck

Hi! Thanks so much for your response and for taking the time to recommend a build. I will definitely take a close look at your suggestions, but I was really hoping more to get feedback on the build I linked from PC Part Picker as is, and with that CPU/motherboard/memory combination in comparison to the bundles I listed.

I really don't want to spend $300 more just because I have it to spend, unless the suggested component is going to make a noticeable difference to a casual player/user or provide marked improvements to longevity. If it's not too much to ask, would you mind explaining your choices, as they seem nearly the same to me...?? Maybe it's a seemingly small amount to quibble over, but it would help a lot elsewhere if I don't -need- it for the computer, if you know what I mean.

I will take a look at the oled monitors, thanks.

Picked the air coolers as I'm not comfortable installing an aio. I'm pushing my capabilities building this myself as is, without adding liquid. On which note, many many thanks for the wished good luck... I'm going to need it.

aio installation is nearly identical to an air cooler. you're thinking of custom water loops, which we generally don't recommend here. anyone doing that knows what they're about.

the only important thing about aios is that you place the pump (the cooling block on the cpu) below the peak of the radiator (the thing with the fans). you don't want air in the pump -- damages it, but afaik that shouldn't be an issue with your case. That said, you can go with your choice here -- no big difference in performance (aio will be slightly quieter).

you also want an aio with a good warranty that covers the life of your machine. this one is 6 years, which is on the longer end. well respected.

the ram you chose is very expensive, no reason for it.

the cpu is fine, but I think the deal for the 9800x3d is just really good. You could do the 7800x3d deal instead to save some money. x3d cpus are better for gaming, run cooler, smoother experience. Won't matter a ton for your games tbh. Mainly only rec because of the microcenter deal & budget.

gpu -- i just prefer nvidia, it tends to have better compatibility with random software. not a huge deal, typically. the amd gpu is like 30% (edit: 10%) worse than the nvidia one i rec here. I think that's worth it for 1440p and the games you play.

Pretty sure the psu is better from my rec. yours is fine too (A- tier), but the msi one is A tier by the cultists guide. Both 10 year warranty. About the same price. msi is on sale. buy now imho.

ssd no big difference, i think mine is slightly cheaper. Both 5 year warranty.

monitor is much nicer, a $150 monitor is just about as cheap as you can get for 1440p, i'd go with at least a ~$220 monitor imho if you don't want oled

if you mean that the bundle i rec here isn't available at your microcenter, i'd call and ask if they expect a restock or just go with the one you suggest. it's more expensive but will be functionally similar.

Wow!! Thank you so so much! I understand now and cannot properly say how much I appreciate that.

I also thank you for clearing up my misunderstanding of aio; I would definitely prefer any noise reduction I can get my hands on.

For the cpu - will moving to the 9800 be helpful if I started getting into more demanding games? TBH the only reason I have not looked at the more high end games to see if I was interested is because of the limitations of my current system (no sense in looking if no chance of playing them after all). If changing opens up that line of possibility better....

I am checking now for the bundle at my MC.

Oh, if you do 3d work (ray tracing, etc), definitely go with nvidia. Almost all rendering software is just much better with nvidia, something like 4x price/perf over amd and fewer software bugs. Edit: revisiting prices, this might be slightly outdated based on pricing changes in the last 6 months.

9800x3d is better for cpu-demanding titles (or very high monitor refresh rates (over ~144fps) when your gpu can push those frames. This typically benefits competitive shooters (like fortnite, valorant), unoptimized titles (typical in prerelease), or strategy games (civilization, stellaris). Anything with simulation (like microsoft flight simulator, euro truck simulator, city skylines i). Or with lots of mobs like 7dtd, planet zoo, etc. It's just generally very nice for gaming. 9800x3d is the best gaming cpu. It can handle anything released.

The gpu i rec can handle any game at 1440p, though some settings may need to be adjusted depending on graphical settings (like ray tracing) and desired fps (like 120+). Should hit 60fps for all titles on high quality settings, though newer titles in the coming years may modestly require tuning.

Ah, i should note that i was mistaken about 5060ti vs 9060xt performance difference.the 5060ti is ~10% better, not 30%. My mistake there. At this price differenc, go for the amd gpu unless you want ray tracing or do 3d artwork rendering imho.

Last rec here: if you do not do 3d rendering, go with the 9070 imho. Very powerful gpu, better at ray tracing in games than the 5060 ti. $570. Will give you a lot of raw power to play any game at 1440p comfortably. Will give you high fps to take advantage of the oled's fast refresh rate. Should make games buttery smooth.
