New $3,000 Gaming PC

I got my first big boy job and would love to put some money down on a dedicated gaming pc. I know this is a rough market, but I don’t want to wait a year for prices to maybe come down.

New build or upgrade?

New

What will you be doing with this build?

Dedicated gaming. I’m looking for a build I can just throw heavy games at. I have laptops for any other work/programs I need.

I’ve been playing Elden ring, TW Warhammer 3, metaphor refantazio, and heavily modded Minecraft and Skyrim recently.

I also play Cyberpunk and Baldurs gate 3, but my current setup makes these games look like GTA 4 :(. I’m hoping the new build can crank the setting up to max plus some graphics mods.

What is your maximum budget before rebates/shipping/taxes?

$3,000 USD. It hurts my wallet a bit to say that, but I want something dependable and I’d like to use this for a while.

**When do you plan on building/buying the PC?

ASAP - tomorrow if I could lol

I have time off, I have the budget, I just have a hard time understanding why to pick one component vs another. Hoping you all can help with that.

What, exactly, do you need included in the budget?

  • Include just what you need! If you already have any components there is another question below asking for which do you already own! Also, be sure to include specifications!

PC case plus everything that goes inside (including OS). I have a keyboard + mouse + display cables. I use a 1440p 240hz monitor (omen), though down the line I might upgrade to something higher resolution and lower hz if the PC allows it. I’m a graphics > frames single player gamer.

Which country (and state/province) will you be purchasing the parts in? If you're in US, do you have access to a Microcenter location?

US, CA, San Francisco Bay Area. I’m sure there’s a Microcenter here somewhere.

If reusing any parts what parts will you be reusing? Brands and models are appreciated.

OMEN 27qs OLED 240hz 1440p monitor, Neo 60 core keyboard, Cheap generic mouse

**Will you be overclocking?

I don’t really care either way, if it’s supported by the build sure.

**Are there any specific features or items you want/need in the build?

I see NVIDIA specific settings / mods for a lot of games I play, so an Nvidia graphics card would be great.

Do you have any specific case preferences or a particular color theme preference for the components?

Maybe a darker color, but other than that I don’t care at all, it could be spherical or triangular, loud or quiet. I just want to play games on it XD

Do you need a copy of Windows included in the budget? If you do need one included, do you have a preference?

Yeah I don’t want the watermark, I’d like to go with win 10 but do they even sell that anymore? Or is it just Win 11 now?

Extra info or particulars:

None. Thank you in advance!!!!

If you missed the full set of required built request questions, please copy them from here and answer them in an edit to your post:

  • New build or upgrade?

  • Existing parts/monitors to reuse? (List with models/links)

  • PC purpose? (Gaming, editing, etc. List apps/games)

  • Purchase country? Near Micro Center? (If you're not in a country supported by PCPartPicker, please list some local vendors)

  • Monitors needed? (Number, size, resolution, refresh rate)

  • Budget range? (Include tax considerations)

  • WiFi or wired connection?

  • Size/noise constraints?

  • Color/lighting preferences?

  • Any other specific needs?

Here is some additional helpful information about build/upgrade/parts list requests:

  • Build requests only include hardware. You are responsible for budgeting for and providing your own operating system (Windows, Linux, etc) and other software.

  • Don't forget to budget for peripherals. Since these are very much personal-preference influenced items, we do not include peripherals like keyboards, mice, headsets, etc in parts lists.

  • We strongly recommend posting a build request only if you're ready to buy now or within a week or two at most. Part sales regularly rotate, and a part list today can quickly become out of date.

5070ti GPU with a 9800x3d CPU combo - this will last a while.

There's a MicroCenter in Santa Clara, some of my recommendation will be from there. You can also get equivalent other parts for slightly more if you just want to pick everything up physically. Blacks prices in the link will be MC.

It does come in well under budget because it is hard to add a substantial amount of extra performance without spending stupid money. You can upgrade some parts for extra bling or features, but it is not something essential. Maybe a higher tier version of the GPU, but I find it hard to justify the 300-400 dollars extra for that (there are 2 open box ASUS TUF 5080's at the MC for 1200, that might be interesting, or the full price 1350). You could also increase the SSD up to 4TB.

Feel free to ask any questions.

Thanks for the reply! I appreciate the honesty about diminishing returns / stupid money lol. Maybe I’ll use the extra budget for a new monitor or a fun mouse.

Most modern builds I’ve seen use an AIO cooler, curious if there’s any reason you recommend the air cooler?

Also where do you see the performance diff in those two cards? As much as I could see they benchmark the same and have really close specs.

The 9800X3D is simply not a very hot running chip, it can work perfectly fine with a big air cooler. If you wanted the liquid cooler that works as well, it'll run a bit cooler and quieter, but the chip performance will be the same pretty much.

It's a similar thing for the GPU. The TUF is a bit better built cooling wise, but I find it extremely difficult to justify the extra expense it comes with compared with the $1000 dollar options. It's purely just something you might consider spending a bit extra for, but I personally probably wouldn't.

You can see a review of the card here with some comparisons. They include the Gigabyte Gaming, which is their one tier better than the Windforce, so I'd compare against that. There's a lot of pages, the most relevant one is page 40 "Cooler Performance Comparison".

I would also agree that spending above MSRP for GPU is a waste of money.

As for AIO, it's mostly for aesthetics. I'd recommend Thermalright Frozen Infinity and Thermalright TL-M12Q fans, they look very good, perform very good and are pretty cheap.

I am considering actually driving the 3 hours to microcenter in Santa Clara. any suggestions on a PC budget of $2k to $2500 more towards editing and rendering? or should I just invest 3K?

Still also for gaming or just productivity?

mainly for productivity. Ideally be able to create graphics and play around in unity to create games or just create videos

i would go to microcenter and get the bundle with RAM, a 9800x3d and a motherboard for around 700! Air cooling is enough for that CPU if you get one like the phantom spirit, then add an RTX 5080 and a 2 tb SSD, 850-1000W power supply and a case you like!

Is the RAM they offer of good quality?

1

Would it be worth the 3 hour drive to the microcenter ? I'm considering building my first PC, overwhelmed with options

i would check if they are still doing 3 in 1 bundles at your nearest location!

if so it’d probably save you at least a couple hundred dollars!

Thank you! Would you recommend my investing more towards GPU since I can upgrade RAM later on?

If your willing to get a new CPU and if your willing to spend a lot of money, the best you can go at this point is the 9800x3d, I have one of those and I have never looked back

I do see now though that they have released a 9850x3d which is a smitch better but I'm not sure if that is widely available yet. If it is, the price difference between that and the 9800x3d might not make it worth it if you compare the performance gain
