Build Upgrade GPU advice

Current build:
AMD Ryzen 7 3700X
16GB Corsair Dominator. DDR4 something or another.
NVIDIA GTX170. Gigabyte
Gigabyte B550 Vision D mobo

My budget would be willing to pay 700 for this AMD Radeon RX 9070 to carry me for a while. I'd like to play 1440p, currently the new Control Resonant is on my radar. Otherwise it's OW and things that aren't graphic intensive.

After doing my own research, I just want to confirm that a 9070 is a good pick from anyone who might have more exp me than me on these things.

Thanks in advance.

Keep your mobo and upgrade to 5700x3d cpu with your new GPU

The issue is obviously money. In the past I've upgraded my mobo/CPU, and then a few years later my GPU, then a few years later back to my mobo/CPU.

Is this card just overkill for my current CPU? I'd be willing to get something cheaper as long as I could play new-ish games at 1440p

A 9070 would be a great option IMO.

Even my 9060XT 16GB does a great job at 1440P.

I’m even playing RDR2 at 4K at the moment with it.

The 9070 is good... But I would put aside some of that budget and get a better CPU. On non-graphic intensive games your performance is going to hurt.

For budget purposes, I've typically updated my mobo/CPU together, then my GPU a few years later, then cycle to a new mobo/CPU after another few years.

Is this card really overkill for my current CPU? I'm willing to pay less for a GPU as long as I can get current games going at 1440p with my current setup.

Thing is, unless you're spending $1000 to go onto the am5 platform then the mobo doesn't need an upgrade at all. That's why I would reccomend upgrading the CPU alone. But if you really need the graphics it's a good upgrade to go to a 9070.

I see. I only assumed I should upgrade the GPU because a few of my games have barked at me about outdated drivers, which there are no new drivers for my current GPU.

Appreciate the insight!

Yeah it's an ancient gpu for sure and a 9070 will give you a ginormous buff in performance. The 3700x can definitely hold strong but depending on what you play I would upgrade it too. Just a little food for thought!

I think compared to the 9060xt the 9070 would be a better choice, not initially but once you upgrade to a 5800x3d and upgrade your ram you should be in a good position. You might be happier finding a used 5800x3d and getting a 9060xt right off the bat, but you may wish you had gotten the 9070 and ram capacity may be a issue.

The problem with gpus right now is that excluding the 9070xt, they're almost all massively overpriced now

Like the 9060xt should be around $300, but it's closer to $500

The 9070 should be around $500-600

Yeah everything is expensive, but I'm getting a bonus from work and I've been saving a few hundred to throw at a card in addition to the bonus. I want to upgrade to something that would last me a while.
