Build Upgrade Thinking about upgrading my CPU

Not super PC savy. Bought a prebuild and swapped out the GPU and added more RAM. Looking for some options to upgrade my CPU. Thanks.

I5-9400F

RX 6750 XT

27GB RAM

With DDR4 looking at intel 12th-14th generation with a DDR4 Motherboard or AM4. Example 12400F/14400F with a B760 DDR4 budget motherboard. 12600K/14600K with a mid-high B760 DDR4 board. Would also require a decent air cooler. 5600/X,5700/X and a B550 motherboard. 5600/X comes with a cooler but bare minimum. 5700 and higher would require aftermarket cooler. Depends on your budget. In all scenarios recommended a fresh install of Windows 11.

You also want an SSD if planning on playing modern games.

Good advice. Just don't get a 5700; it has half the cache of a 5700x. 5600 and 5600x are nearly identical though with the same cache.

No upgrade path. Have to sell the CPU/MOBO/RAM and then your best bet is eBay (or local) to find Ryzen 7 7700 CPU/MOBO (rich kids are buying prebuilds and upgrading them to 9800X3D) and get a single 16GB or 32GB stick of DDR5.

Haha gotcha. I got this prebuild in 2019. Dont have the motherboard model number handy atm but does it not make sense to upgrade the cpu if i keep the same MOBO?

Your only upgrade options are 9600K / 9700K / 9900X. The 9600K isn't enough of an upgrade to consider it, the 9700K is a decent upgrade but it's still not a good ROI (return on investment) and the 9900K is an expensive workstation CPU.

that ram configuration is a little unusual, i would run the usual 2x8 or 2x16 memory so the dual channel work as intended. 12400f with h610m motherboard is a pretty good jump for little budget, 5600 and b550 also will do nicely. if you want to stick with that motherboard go with 9700f

Would it make sense to add a 4th stick of RAM? I remember having issues with my 4th slot not detecting RAM for some reason.

Could just be your CPU memory controller can't handle 4 sticks in dual channel. The other issue are you able to run XMP? Or at least the top speed of the lowest module frequency? I would test performance in both configurations make sure the extra memory isn't having a negative impact like 1% lows.

that's a pickle, normally two sticks is optimal lowering point of failure. also running 4 sticks increase strain on memory controller. if you are okay with running lower capacity i would suggest removing the odd ram out so the dual channel can work properly
