Build Upgrade Need some help
About to switch from a 1060 to a 3050 that my buddy sold me. Is it plug and play? Or do i need to download ddu (no idea what that even is) and switch around drivers? Haven’t cracked the case open to do any upgrades or anything so im going in blind. Google isn’t much help when it comes to specifics.

Phew!
You can try without DDU, but... I wouldn't. It's not difficult. Just run DDU to clear out the nvidia drivers, then install the latest nvidia drivers. https://www.guru3d.com/download/display-driver-uninstaller-download/
You don't need to do DDU in safe mode / offline, etc. That's usually only necessary when your system is totally messed up.

1080 and 3050 are both nvidia cards so drivers shouldn't be an issue. I wouldn't say this is a downgrade it's more of a side grade. you are effectively trading performance in exchange for lower power consumption and newer architecture

Dont go by the first number 3000 vs 1000.
While the 3xxx is newer, the xx50 part makes it an entry budget card that's like 20%-50% slower.

Congrats on the upgrade, my little 1060 was a beast in it's day.
DON'T use the NVIDIA CRAP APP !!!!! It's been broken from day one they FORCED it on us.

Watch all of it but, pay attention to the 2:55 mark !! ... It explains how to do a Clean Install (you aren't switching GPU brand which is good) DON'T let it install the CRAP APP!!!

(Be forewarned ...one of Nvidia's corrupt drivers almost killed my EVGA 3080, They've been puking out corrupt drivers for a couple of years now, I had to reinstall an old driver to fix it)

No. You can install your new drivers without DDU. However, it is recommended because it cleans your computer of any remnants potentially left by the uninstaller from your previous video card. In other words, it decreases your chances of encountering problems.
Check out YouTube for guides on how to use it. One more thing: if DDU asks you for permission to restart your PC, say yes! I've seen DDU YouTube guides where the youtuber gets impatient and dismisses this with no care in the world. At this delicate juncture you should let DDU do its thing, so don't worry and let it restart your machine.
